Please Stop Spreading Rumors About Me — They Keep Coming True

Chapter 143 — The Ones Who Couldn’t Wait

The enemy had always been somewhere I could point at. A tournament. An Empire. An Editor. A Redactor. A dark. The hardest fight of the whole war turned out to be the one with no enemy standing in it at all — the fight against wanting the right thing too much.

The seasons after the near-drowning were the longest of my life, and the quietest, and in a way I did not expect, the worst. There was no battle to fight. The vessel grew, slow and steady and sure, the way Mu Chen’s arithmetic said it would. Every day a little wider. Every day a little closer to the size that could catch the whole ocean and bring the Lantern home. And every night, the Redactor whispered hurry, and every night, the whole world had to hold its own hands off the Homelight and choose, again, to wait.

I want you to understand what that costs, done every single night, for a season, and then another. It is one thing to hold a discipline for an hour when the danger is in front of you. It is another to hold it for months, in the dark, against your own heart, when the thing you are denying yourself is the rescue of someone you love who is cold and alone and has asked, and asked kindly, only that you come. The Redactor had found the one wound it could keep its finger in forever, and it kept it there, patient as the grave, every night, and the world grew tired in a way that no amount of homecomings could rest.

”They have waited a thousand years,” the whisper said, gentle, reasonable, in every ear that ached. ”And the shore is nearly wide enough. Nearly. What is the difference between nearly and enough, when measured against one more night of the Lantern in the cold? You call it discipline. I call it what it is: you have decided your caution matters more than their suffering. Bring them home. You are close enough. You have been close enough for weeks. Every night you wait is a night you chose your comfort over their freedom.”

And the terrible thing, the thing that made this the darkest stretch of the whole road, is that a version of it was true, and we all knew it, and there was no clean answer, because ”close enough” is a real question and not a wicked one, and reasonable people who loved Su Yue with their whole hearts could look at the same growing shore and disagree, in perfect sincerity, about whether the waiting had become wisdom or had curdled into cowardice.

So the movement did the thing I had feared since the night the whisper started.

It split.

It was not the Crossed. I want to be clear about that, because it would be easy to make these people villains and they were the furthest thing from it. The Crossed took up steel out of grief and rage. These were people who took up nothing at all except the conviction that love should not wait — and they were, if anything, the most loving people in the whole movement, which is exactly what made it unbearable.

They called themselves, quietly, the Openhanded. Their argument was simple and it was made entirely of tenderness: the shore was close enough, Su Yue’s request to wait was a selflessness so pure it should be honored by refusing it, and a love that could watch the beloved suffer one more avoidable night in the cold was not a higher love but a colder one. ”You’ve made a religion out of patience,” their voice said — a woman from the east, a homecoming-mother, one of the gentlest souls in the movement, and she said it with tears running down her face and no anger in her at all. ”And I understand it. But I have been cold and alone in the dark, and someone came and got me before it was convenient, before it was safe, and that is why I’m alive. Su Yue is up there right now, cold, alone, waiting, because we have decided our arithmetic matters more than their freedom. I won’t do it anymore. I’m sorry. I love you all. But I won’t leave them up there one more night to make a spreadsheet comfortable.”

And a piece of the movement — a real piece, thousands, the tenderest thousands we had — began, gently, lovingly, to gather to reach for Su Yue against the plan.

The family held the line. Of course we did. Xue Ningzhi laid out the arithmetic again, cold and exact: the vessel was close, yes, but close was not enough, and a homecoming of the largest ark in creation into a shore even a little too small did not come home a little short — it drowned, completely, the first-age drowning, everyone, including the Lantern, forever. ”Close enough” was not a smaller version of enough. It was the catastrophe wearing enough’s face. There is no partial credit at the bottom of the ocean.

But you cannot win an argument about arithmetic against a woman who has decided that love does not do arithmetic. And I stood there, rested, clear, everything I had learned in all these years ready in my hands, and I understood that I had no move. There was no enemy to out-think. No mechanism to counter. No clever door. There were only two kinds of love, both real, both sincere, tearing at each other over the same beloved, and the strongest man alive could not command a single grieving heart to be patient, because patience commanded is not patience, and love is not a thing you can order to hold still.

And then the worst of it. The most intimate of it. The thing I did not see coming and should have.

The Scroll cracked.

— • —

It had been on my shoulder since the very beginning. Through every legend, every tier, every descent. It had grieved Su Yue for a thousand years, kept their ember lit through the whole long dark, whispered Not again until it became a promise instead of a fear. And it had held, all this time, the way we all held.

And one night, with the shore so close and the whisper so patient, it could not hold anymore.

”Talent,” it said, and its voice was not the engagement-voice, and it was not even the grieving-gold I had come to know. It was small, and it was breaking, and it was a thousand years old. ”I kept them lit for a thousand years. Alone. Do you understand? When there was no you, no movement, no shore, no hope of any kind — I kept the ember burning by myself in the dark because I could not bear a universe without them in it. A thousand years. And now they are right there, and the shore is nearly wide enough, and you are asking me — me, of all the things in creation — to sit on your shoulder and wait.” Something in it that had never once cracked in all the time I’d known it cracked all the way through. ”I am not a patient thing. I was fired from Heaven for not being able to leave a story untold. And you are asking me to leave the only story that ever mattered to me sitting one inch from its ending, night after night, and I have tried, talent, I swear to you I have tried, but I cannot. The Openhanded are right. Bring them home. Please. I am begging you. Bring them home before I have to spend one more night this close and this far. I cannot wait anymore. I have waited a thousand years and I cannot wait one more night.”

And then the Scroll — my Scroll, on my shoulder since the beginning — went silent, and turned away from me, toward the Homelight, toward the Openhanded, for the first time since it had settled on my shoulder.

That was the bottom. Not a drowning. Not a battle. Not a name lost to the dark. The bottom was a movement splitting into two kinds of love over the same beloved, and the tenderest souls we had gathering to reach for the sky against the plan, and the arithmetic that could not win against a broken heart, and the Scroll — the thing that had never once left my side — turned away from me toward the star it could not bear to keep waiting for.

We were so close. That was the cruelty of it. We had never been closer. And it was tearing us apart, because there is no ache in all the world quite like being one inch from the thing you have wanted for a thousand years, and being asked, by the people who love you, to hold still.

I sat that night with a cold pot and a silent Scroll and a movement coming apart at the exact seam of its own best love, and for the first time since the bottom of the Sedgewater road, I did not know how we came back from this.
