Please Stop Spreading Rumors About Me — They Keep Coming True

Here is the thing I got right in that first half-second — clear, rested, and finally making sense in a way I never could a month ago, back when I was just an exhausted guy who thought love meant carrying the whole world by myself:

You cannot stop this by holding harder.

The old me would have thrown himself under that weight, trying to be the floor strong enough to catch a premature homecoming by brute force, only to drown and take everyone else with me — because that’s what a bright light reaching out alone into the flood always does, and I’d spent a hundred and forty Chapters watching it fail and doing it anyway. But I wasn’t that man anymore. Three days of being held had taught me the lesson the whole book had been trying to beat into me: the answer isn’t holding harder. The answer is holding together, and holding slow.

So I didn’t try to catch the weight. I just helped the world stop pulling it.

”Bai Qing,” I said, and she was already moving, because holding is her entire craft and she’d felt the shift the same second I did. She took the floor — the wide, shared floor, all of us, the whole gathered family, Mu Chen spreading the descending weight thinner than it had ever been, Yun Shu reading the exact shape of the overreach, Tao Tao’s whole network catching the hundred towns before they could tug another inch, Ji Lan whispering the truth down every thread faster than the longing could travel — and together, as the cloth of the entire movement, we didn’t catch the homecoming.

We held the world back from its own reaching. Gently. Like you’d hold back someone you love from diving into the sea after a drowning child, knowing that two drownings don’t help anyone. We caught the hundred towns mid-pull and refused to let them finish, and the ember flared and strained — and didn’t gutter, barely, held by a whole world finally remembering how to hold slow — and the descending weight of everything Su Yue carried stopped its terrible fall and hung there, and didn’t come home, and didn’t drown anyone, and settled, achingly, back into the waiting.

It cost us. I won’t pretend it didn’t. The ember was scarred — Yun Shu found it after, a thinness in the Homelight that hadn’t been there before, the mark of a star nearly ripped from the sky by the people who loved it most. It will heal, Mu Chen says. But it’s the first wound Su Yue has taken since the day the First Author erased them, and we gave it to them ourselves, out of love, by reaching too soon, and I don’t think any of us will ever quite forgive ourselves for it.

And then, into the terrible, straining quiet of a hundred towns realizing what they’d almost done, Su Yue spoke. To all of us. To the whole world. And it was the bravest, most selfless thing I have ever heard in a book full of brave, selfless things.

”Stop,” they said, softly, and the whole world stopped. ”Oh, my loves. Stop. Don’t you dare.” Their voice broke, the way it always does halfway through. ”Do you know why I gave my light away? So no one would ever have to drown again. And you almost — you almost drowned the whole world just now, reaching for me. If you drown getting me home, you unmake the entire reason I went into the dark. I would rather stay here another thousand years than come home to a world that drowned itself hurrying.”

A silence hung at the top of the sky. Then came the thing that undid me completely.

”I have waited a thousand years,” Su Yue said. ”I can wait a little longer. And I want you to hear me, because someone has been telling you that waiting is a betrayal, but it’s a lie — the cruelest lie there is. Making me wait until it’s safe isn’t you failing to love me. It’s you loving me the right way — the grown, patient, unselfish way, the way that doesn’t drown the world to soothe its own heart. I am not being kept from you. I am choosing you. Again. The way I chose you the first time, when I gave my light away. I choose the safe homecoming over the fast one. I choose the world that lives over the reunion that drowns. A little longer. For me. Because I am not coming home to a graveyard, and I am not coming home over your bodies, and if you love me — and I know you love me — you will let me wait in the cold a little longer, and you will build the shore right, and you will come and get me when it is safe, and not one hour before.”

The world wept. The whole world, at once, wept — not the joy of the night they’d first heard Su Yue’s voice, but something older, harder, and truer: the grief of loving someone so much you have to make them wait, and the discipline of doing it anyway, because that is what love actually is when it grows up.

I said the rest of it, because it was mine to say, because I had just learned it three days before and the ink was still wet on me.

”The deepest love there is,” I told the world, my voice shaking across every thread, ”is the kind that can just wait for the person it loves. Anyone can run toward their love. That’s easy. That’s the simple stuff, the love that grabs and demands, the kind that would rather sink together than wait alone. Su Yue just showed you the hard way. The love that says: I will wait, and I will make you wait, because your safety matters more than my own heart. That isn’t less love. That’s more. That’s the most.” I wiped my face and didn’t bother pretending I wasn’t crying. ”We are going to bring Su Yue home. I promise. But we’re going to do it right, and slow, and safe — no faster than the world can carry. Every night, when the whisper comes to tell you that waiting is a betrayal, you tell it what the Lantern told us. You tell it we’re loving the hard way. The grown way. The way that doesn’t drown.”

Down at the bottom of the world, the dam — which was basically the floor now, the thing that had spent the whole crisis doing the one job it had wanted for ten thousand ages — finally spoke. Its voice was fierce, protective, almost maternal; it was the sound of something that had held the world’s grief for so long it just couldn’t watch us hurt ourselves anymore.

”I wouldn’t have let it drown,” it said, low. ”You should know that. When they reached too soon — I felt the weight starting to crush down, and I didn’t open my hands. I held. I held harder than I’ve held in a thousand ages, just so the world would have the time it needed. I’ve spent forever being scared I’d drown them by opening too early. Tonight, I realized I’d sooner tear myself apart than let that happen.” There was a silence, ten thousand ages deep, and something brand new in it — not fear. Purpose. ”I am not just the thing that has to be careful. I’m the thing keeping them safe while you build. Let me be that. I’m good at holding. Let me hold the line until the shore is ready. It’s the first useful thing I’ve ever wanted to do.”

”You’re already doing it,” I said, and I put my hand on the cold that was no longer clenched, just braced — on purpose, lovingly, a wall against the world’s own dangerous longing. ”You’re holding the door so the world doesn’t hurt itself trying to force it open. You aren’t just being careful. You’re a guardian. You’ve become a guardian, my friend. The oldest and strongest one there is.”

And the Homelight, scarred and steady, warmed a little in the dark — because Su Yue had felt the dam choose to hold the line for us, and there is no version of the tired dark becoming our guardian that doesn’t make the Lantern of the Nine Skies glad.

The warm — late.

I made the soup. My hands were still shaking, and it was, by general consensus, a slightly worse soup than usual, but for once nobody teased me about it. It had been that kind of day.

Xue Ningzhi didn’t let us have it easy, because that isn’t what she’s for. ”You need to understand,” she said, quiet, by the fire. ”The Redactor didn’t lose. Not really. Every other time, we found a defense, closed the door, and it had to try something new. This one—” She shook her head. ”This one we can’t close. The weapon is the world’s love for Su Yue, and we can’t make the world stop loving her. We wouldn’t if we could. So the whisper will come back. Every night, until the homecoming, it’ll tell a world that aches for the Lantern that waiting is a betrayal. Every night, we have to hold the line against our own hearts. Some nights it’ll be close. The ember is already scarred.” She looked around at us. ”The Redactor finally found the wound it can keep its finger in. The end of this war isn’t a battle. It’s a discipline — the hardest one. Loving someone enough to not rush toward them, while something whispers that your patience is a lie. That’s the darkest part of the road, and we just started walking it.”

Nobody argued, because she was right, and the fire stayed quiet for a long time.

Then Tao Tao, our Founder of the Homecoming, lifted her head off my shoulder. Fierce, wet-eyed, and completely herself, she said, ”Then we get very, very good at waiting. Together. We already learned how to carry grief without drowning. We’ll learn to carry hope, too. Same craft. You just point it at a different weight.” She glared around the fire like she was daring the universe to disagree. ”Su Yue waited a thousand years alone. We can wait a little longer, all of us, holding each other’s hands off the Homelight until it’s safe. That’s not a dark hour. That’s just love, being grown up about it. And we’re extremely good at love. It’s the whole thing we do.”

Mu Chen wore that tired, soft smile of his and told us that, really, he was right — the carrying-craft was never just for the heavy stuff like grief; you could teach your heart to hold any weight without drowning in it, hope included, longing included, the brutal nearness of what you want most included — and he’d start teaching it tomorrow, the whole world learning how to carry its own hope just like it’d learned to carry its own grief.

Yun Shu leaned into me, smelling like home, and whispered, ”It’s a worse soup. But you’re a better man than you were a month ago, and you held the world back today instead of letting it crush you, and I’ve decided that’s worth a bad bowl of soup.” She kissed the side of my head. ”Also, you’re going to bed. The floor’s got the night. The floor’s got every night now — that was the point, wasn’t it?”

Across the fire, the First Author hummed the dark’s lullaby. She studied her list — eleven thousand four hundred and one, with one name underlined and waiting right at the top of a fresh page, a name she’d get to bring home last and brightest of all, when it was finally safe, not one hour before — and she didn’t look restless. She looked like a woman who’d waited a thousand years already and finally realized that the waiting itself was just another kind of love.

We have a whole world to bring home, after all — and the one we love most is waiting in the cold at the top of the sky, and has asked us, for the world’s sake, not to hurry.

So we won’t. We’ll build the shore right. We’ll hold each other’s hands off the Homelight every night the whisper comes. And we will love the Lantern the hard way, the grown way, the way that waits — which is, it turns out, the last and hardest thing this tired world had left to learn.

A little longer. For them. We can do a little longer.
