Please Stop Spreading Rumors About Me — They Keep Coming True

Yuhan lived through those first few days in this new world like you’d guess a thousand-year-old storyteller would — she was lost, she was mourning that whole valley of people still stuck under the ocean, but mostly she was just relieved. Because the thing Yuhan died for, the thing she refused to let go of — keeping the stories — hadn’t just survived. It had won. A whole world of people who remembered. A movement built on the exact heresy that got her erased in the first place.

Ji Lan found her, of course. The voice of the remembering, meeting the first keeper the Empire ever managed to silence. I didn’t catch all of what they said, but I saw how it ended — Ji Lan sitting at Yuhan’s feet like some nervous student, the most famous storyteller around listening to the one the dark took a thousand years ago. It was like a torch being passed, straight to the only hands that had spent this whole book learning how to hold it. Ji Lan looked different after. ”I thought I was the start of something,” she told me. Her voice was quiet, her eyes were a little wet, and she wouldn’t look at me — she had that look, the one that meant she was feeling something she couldn’t name yet. ”I’m not. I’m just the part of the line that finally got to be loud. There were keepers before me, and there will be after. I’m just a link. Not a beginning.” She paused. ”That’s better, honestly. I spent my whole life being scared that I’d be forgotten. It’s a lot less scary when you realize you’re just a link in a chain that goes back a thousand years and forward further than you can see.” She gave a small smile. ”Yuhan says the trick is to keep the story, not to be the story. I’ve been doing that backwards my whole career.” She didn’t finish, and I didn’t push. She’s figuring it out, in her own time. I let her.

And the First Author had a list.

That was the thing that finally changed her. For a thousand years, she’d dragged those eleven thousand four hundred and six names around like a jail sentence — a punishment she gave herself because she refused to forget, and she didn’t think she earned the right to. But now? Now the list was something else. A manifest. A rescue list. Eleven thousand four hundred and five people she could bring home, one by one, as fast as the world could handle — her guilt finally turning into the map for her own redemption. She walked like a weight was off her. She’d spent a millennium being the woman who took people out of the world. She’d just turned into the woman who brings them back.

Which is exactly why the Redactor came for her.

Xue Ningzhi saw it first, because she still thinks like the Empire, and Lu backed her up, because he knows how the Empire moves.

”They can’t flood us anymore,” Xue Ningzhi said, her voice flat while we sat at the fire. ”The armor works; any surge just hits the catch we’ve already got. So the Redactor went looking for a new opening, and Yuhan just gave it a target. Our whole power to bring people home relies on the arks. The Scroll. The First Author. The way-songs. The keepers. If you lose the arks, you don’t lose the ability to remember, but you lose the ability to bring people back fast enough for it to matter. We’d be left grasping into the raw ocean, blind, grabbing one person at a time, forever.” She let that sink in. ”The Redactor doesn’t need to break the dam. It just needs to burn the ledgers. Kill the keepers. And it already picked the biggest one.”

The First Author. Eleven thousand four hundred and five names, all stored in one person. Erase her, and you don’t just lose one soul. You lose eleven thousand four hundred and five, all at once — the biggest ark in creation, blanked in a single strike.

And the Redactor tried. That very season. I want to be fair and say it was just a probe, not the main attack, because the Redactor is patient and was just testing the ice — but it was real, and it was close, and it left a mark. It reached for the First Author like it reached for the coast: an erasure aimed like a spear, not at a whole region, but at the one woman holding eleven thousand lives. We caught it. Barely. The armor was built for floods, not for a needle aimed at one heart, so we had to throw ourselves over her just like we did with the dam — Bai Qing holding her, me acting as the floor, the whole weave closing in to keep the Redactor from blanking the ark. It held. She wasn’t erased.

But the Redactor talked, this time. It learned, from us, that the memory-war is won in the watching — so it didn’t just strike; it argued, broadcasting out into the world. It was the coldest, cleverest thing it’s ever said, and I have to give it credit, because a weak argument would be easy to ignore, and this wasn’t weak.

”They are digging up the drowned,” the Redactor told the world. ”Ask yourselves why they were buried in the first place. Ask the Unnamed Hundred, who chose to forget and were finally at peace. Some things are buried because they need to be. Some grief is a mercy that should stay in the ground. This movement won’t let anything rest — not the dead, not the past, not the mercy of an ending. They’ll drag every drowned thing back into the light whether it wants to come or not. I offer you rest. They offer you a world that can never, ever stop remembering. You choose.”

And the worst part is that it wasn’t totally wrong, and we knew it, because the Unnamed Hundred had taught us the exact truth the Redactor was twisting. Some things really should stay set down. Some grief is a mercy to let go. A world forced to remember everything is just another kind of drowning — we’d said that ourselves.

So we couldn’t just deny it. The answer had to be the thing we learned at the Hundred, said plain and loud to the whole world: we don’t drag anything home that doesn’t want to come. Yuhan chose to return — we asked, and Yuhan said yes. Every homecoming is a choice, by the person returning and by the ones who love them; the arks aren’t a mandate to un-bury everything, they’re just a key, offered, never forced. The Redactor was right about some things staying in the ground. It was just lying about who decides. We don’t decide. The lost decide, the grieving decide, and the keepers just hold the door for whoever wants to walk back through it and not one soul more. That’s the difference, the only difference, and it’s the same one it’s always been: consent against conscription, even here, even with the dead.

We couldn’t leave the arks as single points of failure. That was the lesson the probe taught us, and it was a familiar one, because we’d learned it once before at a vault in the north, with a registry Lu came to burn.

You don’t protect a precious record by hiding it in one place. You protect it by copying it everywhere. So that’s what we started — the slow, massive work of making the arks un-erasable the only way anything is ever made un-erasable: by spreading them so wide that no single strike can kill them. The First Author’s list — those eleven thousand four hundred and five names — we started to copy, carefully, with permission, into the weave itself, into the Scroll’s ledger, into a thousand keepers across the healed world, so that erasing her wouldn’t erase them anymore. The ark of one woman became the ark of a whole movement. What the Redactor meant to take with one needle, we scattered into ten thousand hearts, until there was no one heart left to hit.

It isn’t finished. It’ll take a long time, and the Redactor is already, I’m sure, studying this door for its next opening, because that’s what it does — it’s the patient dark, and it will always find another wall to pick at. The memory-war didn’t end with the armor, and it won’t end with the copied arks. It ends, if it ever does, only at the shore we’re still an ocean away from building.

But they came for the keepers, and the keepers are harder to kill than they were.

Up at the top of the sky, the Homelight burned, and I finally understood why the arks matter so much. It’s because of Su Yue.

Su Yue is the largest ark of all. A being who tried to hold the whole world’s remembering — every unseen soul — all at once, alone. Everything Su Yue was carrying when they went under is still there, held down in the bright drowning place at the top of the sky, the way the dam holds the ocean and the First Author holds her list. When we finally build the shore wide enough, and Su Yue can come home, they won’t come home alone. They’ll bring back everything they were carrying — a whole world’s worth of the unseen, home in one single tide. The keepers are the keys to the universal homecoming, and Su Yue is the greatest keeper there ever was, and the Redactor knows it, and one day it will come for Su Yue too, and we’ll have to stand in front of the brightest ark in creation just like we stood in front of the dam.

But not yet. That’s a fight for a future Chapter. Tonight the Homelight burned steady, because a lost star had watched us refuse to let the dark burn a single keeper, and had learned that the shore we’re building will guard the ones who carry the lost as fiercely as it guards the lost themselves.

The warm — late.

I made the soup. Yun Shu tasted it and said, ”Still fine. You know what, I’ve come around on fine. Fine every night is its own kind of miracle. Do you know how many things in my life have been reliably fine? This soup, and you.” She ate. ”That’s the list. Congratulations, you made the list.”

Across the camp, Yuhan told a thousand-year-old story to a ring of Tao Tao’s Rememberers who had never heard it and would now never forget it. Ji Lan sat among them, a link in a chain, learning. The First Author studied her list — her rescue list, her manifest of the coming-home — with the look of a woman who has finally been allowed to spend her guilt on something other than herself, and there were eleven thousand four hundred and five names on it, and every one of them was a door she could open. Bai Qing had spent the day being the floor under a woman she’d helped save, and she looked content in the shape of her life. And Tao Tao, at the far fire, was showing Lu the plan to copy the arks, arguing with him about the safest way to scatter a record so no dark could take it — the two of them, the founder of the rememberers and the man who built the sword, bent over the work of making sure nothing precious could ever again be lost to a single stroke. Not friends. Not forgiven. But building the same thing, at the same fire, and that is more than I ever thought I’d see.

Down at the bottom of the world, the dam held the ocean — still tired, still afraid, still an ocean away from rest. But it had learned the thing that changed everything: that it never destroyed a single thing it forgot. That it had been, all this time, the keeper of everything the world ever lost. That its ten-thousand-age burden was never a graveyard. It was a waiting room.

I went down the next morning to tell it. That nothing is gone. That everything it’s held, all this age, alone, thinking itself a destroyer — all of it is safe, and named where we can find it, and coming home, a little at a time, no faster than the world can carry, until the day it can open its hands and give the whole lost world back at once.

It was quiet a long time when I told it. And then it said the thing that I will carry to whatever end this story has, the thing that made the tired dark, for one moment, sound almost like it could rest.

”Then I did not lose them,” it said. ”All this time. I thought I was the place things went to die. I thought I was the end.” A silence, at the bottom of the world, ten thousand ages deep. ”I was the place they went to be kept. I was keeping them. For you. For this. I just did not know I was keeping them for anything.”

”You were keeping them for their way home,” I said. ”You’ve been the keeper of everything, all along. You just didn’t know there’d ever be a door.”

We are building the door. One name at a time. And they came for the keepers this season, and we held — because everything the dark ever took is still there, waiting, and we are not going to let anyone burn the maps that lead them home.

We have, after all, a whole world to bring back.
