Please Stop Spreading Rumors About Me — They Keep Coming True

We had gotten good at bringing home the drowned whose names somebody kept. That season we started hunting the ones nobody remembered — and that was when I found out my partner had been carrying the biggest problem in the world in her head, all by herself, for months. She hadn’t said a word, because being quietly impossible is just the most Yun Shu thing a person can do.

Let me explain the problem exactly like she explained it to me, because I’d been walking right past it, distracted by all the homecomings.

The chorus was actually working. The arks were finally un-cuttable, sung across a thousand throats, and every day the First Author opened a door on her list. A named soul walked back into the world, and the Scroll logged it, wept, and tried to give it a little jingle. It felt like winning. It felt like the tide had finally turned, and all that was left was the happy math of bringing everyone home, one name at a time, forever.

And then Yun Shu sat down across the fire with her tally-boards and said, ”You know these are the lucky ones.”

”...The people we’re bringing home.”

”The people we *can* bring home.” She has this way of saying things flatly that makes the floor just drop out. ”The First Author’s list. The Scroll’s ledger. The way-songs. Yuhan’s valley. Every soul we’ve brought back had one thing in common, Lin Bo — somebody wrote them down. Somebody kept a name. They’re the drowned who got lucky enough to be remembered by at least one ark.” She tapped the board. ”Do you want to know how many of the drowned that actually is? Out of everyone the dark has taken since before the first story?”

I really didn’t, but she told me anyway, because she is thorough and it is the thing I love most and least about her.

”Almost none of them,” she said. ”A cup. Out of an ocean.”

Here is the thing I hadn’t let myself understand, because it was too big and the homecomings were just too sweet.

Everything down there in the dam’s ocean — the whole drowned world, an age of the forgotten — almost none of it is named. The dam forgot names on purpose; that was the whole point, gently unwriting the name so the person would sink quietly. So the ocean isn’t a library. It is a vastness of the utterly nameless, souls with no list, no keeper, no ark, no grieving relative, no one in all of creation who knew to hold them — because the whole point of their erasure was that no one would.

And you can’t pull up what you can’t find. Reaching into that ocean for one specific nameless soul, Xue Ningzhi said, doing that cold arithmetic she does, is reaching into the whole sea for one particular unmarked drop. ”At the rate the arks let us work,” she said, ”we’ll bring home the listed dead in a few generations. The unlisted—” She stopped. She isn’t a woman who softens numbers. ”We don’t. Not in ten thousand years. Not ever. The arks are a cup. We were never going to empty the sea with a cup.”

Even the dam couldn’t help. I asked it, down at the bottom of the world. ”I hold them,” it said, sounding ashamed. ”I do not know them. I took the names so they would sink. I have been the keeper of a great darkness full of strangers, and I made them strangers myself.” The one thing in creation that held the whole ocean didn’t know a single name in it.

So there it was. The universal homecoming, the big hope of the book, the door we were building — and it opened onto a sea we had no way to read. We could bring back the remembered forever and never touch the forgotten, which is a bitter joke when you say it out loud, because the forgotten were the entire point.

And Yun Shu let me sit in that for as long as it took to feel the size of it, and then she said, ”Unless the ocean isn’t the only place they’re written down.”

The lullaby town — that’s where she showed me.

She’d been mapping something for months. Of course she had. The woman ran the Accuracy Division; she can’t look at a gap without wanting to know its shape.

”When the dark takes a name,” she said, walking me out to a little hill-town east of the terraces, ”it takes the name. It doesn’t take the hole. You taught me that — well, the Downs taught all of us. Residue. The ache with no name. The eleven loaves for a household of three. The place set at the table for no one.” She stopped at the edge of town. ”For a dying world, residue was just sad. A confusing grief nobody could explain. But the world isn’t dying anymore, Lin Bo. A third of it is healed. And a healed world doesn’t just have residue. It can be read.”

Then she showed me, and I’ll remember it until whatever end this story has.

The town had a lullaby. Every mother in it had sung the same one for longer than anyone could say — and every one of them, without knowing why, left a small silence in the middle of it. A breath. A held gap where a verse plainly should be, that every mother felt and none could fill, a hole in a song worn so smooth by a thousand years of humming around it that they’d stopped noticing it was a hole at all.

Yun Shu had heard it in one afternoon. Because that is what she is.

”There’s a person in that silence,” she said quietly. ”I can’t tell you their name. Nobody wrote it down. But I can tell you their shape — the shape of the gap they left. Somebody made that verse. Somebody in this town, long ago, who sang the middle of the song, and the dark took them so completely that all that’s left is the breath where they used to be. The name is gone. But the hole is a perfect cast of the person who was pulled out of it.” She looked at me. ”And a hole is enough. You don’t need the ocean’s index. The world is the index. Every unexplained ache in every healed town is a soul in that ocean, pointing at itself, saying *here, this is my shape, this is where I was*. We don’t have to find them in the sea. We just have to read the hole they left in the world.”

So we did the thing, and it was the strangest homecoming yet, because there was no name to call.

Yun Shu read the gap — reconstructed not a name but a shape, enough of the fit of a missing person to hold up to the ocean like a key to a lock. The First Author reached, not with a name this time but with that shape, and asked the ocean, *is this you*. Mu Chen and the weave took the weight. Bai Qing held. I held the room, and I didn’t reach in, because I never do, because that is how Su Yue drowned.

And a soul answered by the fit of its own hole.

An old woman filled back into the world in the middle of the town square, nameless, a thousand years gone, blinking — and the first thing she did, before she even asked where she was, was finish the lullaby. She sang the missing verse. The one every mother in that town had left a silence for, for a thousand years, without knowing they were holding a space for her to come back and fill.

And then she told us her name, because she still had it — she’d never forgotten it; only the world had. ”Wen’ai,” she said, wondering. ”I’m Wen’ai. I used to sing the little ones down.” And a town that had left a breath in a song for a thousand years sang the whole thing through, at last, with the woman who wrote the missing verse standing in the middle of it.

The Scroll asked before it published, the way it does now.

DING. Reach: one verse, returned to a song. Belief: total. Name: recovered from the shape of a silence. Talent. There was no ledger for her. No list. No ark. NOBODY wrote her down. And we brought her home anyway — out of nothing but the hole she left in the world. Do you understand what Yun Shu just did? The ocean has no index. So she is making the WORLD the index. Every ache. Every silence. Every empty chair. The forgotten have been writing themselves down this whole time, in the shape of what they left behind, and no one could read it until the world got whole enough to feel it.

The cup, it turned out, wasn’t the only way to touch the sea. The whole healed world was a map of its own missing, written in ache instead of ink, and my partner had learned to read it.

I should have been happy. I was, for about a day.

And then I noticed that Yun Shu had gone quiet in a way that wasn’t her usual quiet.

Because reading the ache isn’t free. To find a soul by the shape of the hole it left, you have to feel the hole — take the town’s nameless grief into yourself, hold its shape, carry it until the ocean answers. One town, one lullaby, is bearable. But Yun Shu hadn’t stopped at one. She’d started reading everything — every unexplained silence in every healed town she passed, because she could, because each one was a person, because she is thorough and she is the one who cannot leave a gap unread — and she’d been quietly taking the shape of a hundred, a thousand nameless griefs into herself, alone, holding all of them at once so she could hand them to the ocean one at a time.

I found her at the edge of camp, near dawn, sitting very still, and when I put my hand on her shoulder she was cold, and she didn’t make a joke about my soup, and that is how I knew.

”How many are you holding,” I said.

”I haven’t counted,” she said, which from the woman who counts everything is the most frightening sentence I have ever heard her say. ”I can’t seem to stop reading them, Lin Bo. Every town has so many. And each one is a person, and if I set it down I might lose the shape, and then they’re back in the ocean with no one—” She stopped. Her hands were shaking. ”There are so many. I didn’t know there’d be so many.”

And I understood, with a cold drop of the stomach, that my partner — the steadiest person I have ever known, the one who steadies me — had opened a door onto the whole nameless sea, and had tried, in her thorough and solitary way, to read the entire ocean by herself.

Which is the one thing that has drowned every single soul who ever tried it.
