The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire

Four days after Theron Vance was buried, Blackwood stopped allowing Kael to pretend recovery counted as work.

The accusation came from Edwin Ashcombe.

Naturally.

Kael entered the morning room using the cane only because Mistress Anwen had threatened to confiscate his boots if she caught him crossing the manor without it again. The threat made little medical sense, which meant Kael believed her completely. His burned calf had improved enough that he could put his full weight on it for several steps before the muscle tightened, his ribs no longer punished every breath, and the bruise at his temple had faded into an ugly yellow shadow.

In Kael’s opinion, this meant he was almost healed.

In Anwen’s opinion, it meant he had progressed from severely irritating to moderately irritating.

Edwin’s opinion proved worse.

The Steward waited beside the long table with seven stacks of documents arranged in descending height.

Kael stopped in the doorway.

”No.”

Edwin looked up.

”Good morning.”

Kael pointed at the table. ”I recognize an ambush.”

”You recognize paper.”

”Same thing.”

Lily stood near the window sorting correspondence into trays.

She did not look up.

”You said yesterday you wanted to go back to work.”

”I was injured when I said that.”

”You remain injured.”

”Exactly. My judgment was compromised.”

Edwin pulled out Kael’s chair.

”Sit.”

Kael considered retreat.

The cane destroyed any possibility of making it dignified.

He sat.

Edwin pushed the first stack toward him.

Kael looked at it.

Then at Edwin.

”How long was I gone?”

”Long enough.”

”That is not an answer.”

”It is the answer relevant to the paperwork.”

Lily carried over a cup of tea.

Kael accepted it suspiciously.

”Did both of you arrange this?”

”No,” Lily replied. ”Edwin arranged it. I supported him because watching you discover that Blackwood continued to exist while you were gone seemed educational.”

Kael looked between them.

”This House has lost respect for bloodline authority.”

Edwin sat opposite him.

”House Kael survived several weeks without you. We have become reckless.”

That shut Kael up.

Not because the words insulted him.

Because they made him proud.

He looked at the stacks again.

Reports.

Budget adjustments.

Village requests.

Guild expenditures.

Patrol summaries.

Construction updates.

Medical costs from the Caldera expedition.

Normal problems mixed with abnormal ones.

Blackwood had not frozen while Kael fought beneath a mountain.

The territory had kept moving.

Now everything that had not required an immediate decision had waited for his return.

Kael took the first document.

”What is this?”

”Late-harvest transport estimates.”

”Why is it this thick?”

”Because there are eleven villages.”

Kael looked at Edwin.

”I know how many villages Blackwood has.”

”One occasionally forgets when looking at your travel schedule.”

Kael ignored him.

The report covered Oakridge first.

Harvest acceptable.

Road condition good.

One irrigation gate needed replacement before winter.

Blackwood Hollow showed increased market traffic because of the Adventure Guild.

Hollow Creek had requested additional drainage work.

Bellhaven had finally completed repairs on two grain-storage roofs.

Pinecross had exceeded its expected timber contribution.

Elderwood reported fewer wolf sightings than the previous season.

Mossfield had a dispute over grazing boundaries that Walter had already settled before it became interesting enough to reach Kael.

Greyfen needed a healer visit before winter because several elderly residents could not easily travel to Blackwood Hollow.

Westbrook had requested stone for a retaining wall.

Crow’s Rest had complained about road maintenance.

Again.

Kael looked up.

”Crow’s Rest always complains about the road.”

Edwin nodded.

”This time they are correct.”

”That is inconvenient.”

”Reality often is.”

Kael continued.

Stonebrook had the largest section.

He stopped after the second page.

Then went back.

”Why are there three separate bridge repair entries?”

Edwin did not answer immediately.

Kael looked up.

That was never good.

”The western bridge outside Stonebrook has required repeated maintenance.”

”I remember approving timber.”

”You approved replacement support beams before leaving for the Caldera.”

”They were installed.”

”Yes.”

Kael looked back at the report.

”Then why was another repair ordered nine days later?”

”One support shifted.”

”And five days after that?”

”The eastern brace split.”

Kael frowned.

”That bridge has stood for how long?”

”Longer than either of us has been alive.”

”With worse timber than what Hugo selected.”

”Yes.”

Kael turned another page.

A wagon had broken an axle when part of the deck dropped under load.

No deaths.

Two minor injuries.

Another temporary repair.

Then another inspection request.

”Why was this not brought to me when I returned?”

”You were dealing with funerals, the missing, the Caldera records, the Draconic Core, an Ice Spirit, and a commander who temporarily lost the ability to remain standing.”

Kael considered that.

”Fair.”

Edwin continued.

”The bridge remained passable under weight restriction.”

”Remained?”

Edwin slid a second file toward him.

Kael opened it.

Adventure Guild contract copies.

That caught his attention.

”Why is the Guild involved?”

”The road remains territorial infrastructure. The Guild became involved because merchants requested escort through the detour after several wagons stopped using the bridge.”

”Bandits?”

”No confirmed attacks.”

”Monsters?”

”No confirmed attacks.”

”Then what are they being escorted from?”

”Fear.”

Kael stared.

Edwin folded his hands.

”People do not enjoy taking a narrow forest detour with expensive cargo simply because a sign says nothing dangerous has been confirmed.”

Reasonable.

Annoying.

Kael read the Guild postings.

Escort request.

Bridge inspection support.

Timber delivery.

Temporary road marking.

Nothing dramatic.

Exactly the type of contracts the Adventure Guild had been created to handle without Kael personally solving every problem in Blackwood.

He should have been pleased.

He was.

Then he found the latest report.

His eyes narrowed.

”Two workers did not return from an inspection?”

”One.”

Kael reread the line.

The second worker had come back.

Alone.

”Where?”

”Beneath the bridge.”

Kael looked up.

Edwin’s expression told him the simple morning had ended.

”What happened?”

”The Stonebrook road crew sent two men beneath the western support yesterday afternoon after someone noticed the bridge deck settling again. One returned before dark.”

”And the other?”

”Missing.”

The word changed something inside Kael.

Too soon.

He hated that.

His eyes went to the report.

Not the same.

Not the Caldera.

One missing road worker did not become another Joren merely because the word matched.

Kael forced himself to read instead of react.

”The returning worker says they separated?”

”Yes.”

”Why?”

”The space beneath the western support narrows near the riverbank. They approached from opposite sides to inspect the lower footing.”

”Water depth?”

”Low this time of year.”

”Current?”

”Moderate.”

”Blood?”

”None reported.”

”Signs of collapse?”

”Some loose stone.”

Kael’s attention sharpened.

”Some?”

Edwin slid over another page.

”The Guild sent someone at first light.”

Kael looked at the signature.

Mira Doss had recorded the dispatch.

No conclusions yet.

”When do they report back?”

”They may already have.”

Kael pushed himself upright.

Edwin watched.

”No.”

Kael stared.

”I did not say anything.”

”You were about to go to the Guild.”

”Yes.”

”Finish the village reports.”

Kael looked toward the door.

Then toward the paperwork.

Then at Edwin.

”A man is missing.”

”And Galahad has a functioning organization handling it.”

The words stopped him.

Kael remained standing.

Edwin continued.

”If the Guild requires House authority, they will ask.”

Kael’s hand tightened around the cane.

”You are enjoying this.”

”No.”

That made it worse.

Edwin gestured toward the chair.

”Sit.”

Kael sat.

He hated that Edwin was correct.

That feeling had become unpleasantly common.

He finished the eleven-village report.

All of it.

Even Crow’s Rest.

Then the medical expenditures.

Then the patrol adjustments.

Then the emergency Guild funding transfer.

By the time the final page was signed, the tea had gone cold.

Kael stood.

Edwin did not stop him.

”Now?”

”Now.”

Lily looked up from her correspondence.

”You still need lunch.”

Kael continued toward the door.

”I will eat at the Guild.”

”You always say that.”

”I mean it today.”

”You always say that too.”

Kael escaped before she could become more specific.

Blackwood Hollow had learned to live around the Adventure Guild.

Kael noticed it before he reached the building.

More horses.

More wagons.

Shops near the central road advertised equipment repair, dried food, lamp oil, rope, waterproof cloth, leatherwork, simple potions, bed space, and several things Kael suspected had existed before the Guild but now had signs claiming they were specifically useful to adventurers.

One inn had painted a sword over its door.

The sword pointed backward.

Kael stopped.

His escort almost walked into him.

”What?” the Black Dragon guard asked.

Kael pointed.

The guard examined the sign.

”It is a sword.”

”It is facing the wrong direction.”

The guard looked more carefully.

”You can still tell it is a sword.”

”That does not make it correct.”

A voice came from behind them.

”Your Highness, if you begin regulating tavern signs, I will personally escort you back to the manor.”

Kael turned.

Galahad stood outside the Guild entrance.

His arm no longer rested in a sling, though he held it closer to his body than normal and had apparently developed the irritating habit of noticing when Kael did the same with his injured leg.

”You are supposed to be resting.”

”So are you.”

”We retired that argument.”

”I reinstated it.”

Kael approached.

The Adventure Guild looked different from the day the survivors returned.

Not cleaner.

More settled.

The emergency cots had disappeared from the main hall.

Tables had returned to their original positions.

The contract boards were full again.

People moved through the room carrying papers, weapons, packs, and food.

Yet the Caldera had left marks.

One entire board near the registration desk held no contracts.

Names occupied it instead.

Guild members and attached contractors who had died.

No decorations.

No grand title.

Just names and dates.

Several empty hooks remained beneath them where personal Guild markers had once hung.

Kael slowed.

Galahad noticed.

”We put it up yesterday.”

Kael looked at the names.

”Families agree?”

”Yes.”

”Anyone object?”

”One.”

”To the board?”

”To his brother’s name being beneath someone he disliked.”

Kael looked over.

Galahad’s expression remained serious.

”How did you resolve that?”

”Alphabetical order.”

Kael considered it.

”Brutal.”

”Administration often is.”

They entered.

Mira Doss stood behind a desk with enough ledgers open around her to build a defensive wall.

She looked at Kael’s cane.

Then at Galahad.

Then back at Kael.

”No.”

Kael stopped.

”What?”

”You are not accepting a combat contract.”

”I have not asked.”

”Good.”

Nalia Greve emerged from behind a stack of notices.

”Anwen came here yesterday.”

Kael stared.

Galahad smiled.

”She is becoming remarkably efficient.”

Kael looked around the Guild hall.

”Has every institution in Blackwood received medical orders concerning me?”

Mira turned a page.

”Most.”

”Most?”

”The blacksmith has not signed acknowledgment.”

Kael closed his eyes.

Hugo had principles.

At least one person remained loyal.

Nalia placed a new notice on the front counter.

Kael read the heading.

STONEBROOK WESTERN ROAD — BRIDGE ACCESS SUSPENDED

His irritation vanished.

”Update?”

Galahad motioned toward the rear meeting room.

”Come.”

Kael followed.

Inside, a map of central Blackwood lay across the table.

Stonebrook sat beside the river route connecting several western roads with Blackwood Hollow. The bridge itself was not the only crossing in the territory, but losing it forced merchants into a detour long enough to matter during harvest movement.

Three markers sat near the bridge.

Kael pointed toward the first.

”Worker?”

Galahad nodded.

”Still missing.”

”The Guild scout?”

”Returned twenty minutes ago.”

”And?”

Galahad crossed his arms.

”The bridge is worse.”

”How much?”

”The western side dropped another handspan overnight.”

Kael frowned.

”That quickly?”

”Yes.”

”Flood?”

”No.”

”Bank erosion?”

”Not enough to explain it.”

”Rot?”

”The replacement timbers are less than a month old.”

Kael looked toward the third marker.

”What is that?”

”A second inspection point.”

”Why?”

”The scout found damage beneath the river-facing brace.”

Kael waited.

Galahad did not continue.

”What damage?”

”Cuts.”

Kael stared.

”Tool cuts?”

”Apparently.”

That changed the problem.

”Deliberate?”

”Probably.”

Kael disliked the word.

”Show me.”

Galahad slid a sketch forward.

The Guild scout had drawn the lower support.

Three heavy replacement timbers had been reinforced beneath the bridge deck.

One remained intact.

The second showed a deep cut along the back side where someone standing on the road would never see it.

The third had split near a similar cut.

Kael studied the angle.

”An axe?”

”Possibly.”

”Why cut the underside?”

”To make it fail under weight while appearing intact from above.”

Kael looked up.

That answer had arrived too quickly.

Galahad noticed.

”It is one possibility.”

”Better.”

Kael returned to the sketch.

”Could water or debris do this?”

”Not in straight lines.”

”Monster claws?”

”Possible.”

Kael looked toward him.

Galahad shrugged.

”Some creatures make straight wounds.”

”Do any in Blackwood make three evenly spaced cuts beneath support beams?”

”None I know.”

Kael tapped the missing worker marker.

”What did the survivor report?”

”That is where the story becomes irritating.”

”All useful stories do.”

Galahad leaned against the table.

”The two workers went beneath opposite ends of the bridge. The returning man heard knocking from the other side.”

”Knocking?”

”Yes.”

”How many?”

”He does not remember.”

”From wood?”

”Could not tell.”

Kael frowned.

”He called out?”

”Several times.”

”Response?”

”More knocking.”

Kael felt something crawl along the back of his neck.

Not fear.

Attention.

”What happened next?”

”The sound stopped. He crossed toward the other side. Found the missing man’s lantern beside one support.”

”Blood?”

”No.”

”Footprints?”

”Riverbank is mud and stone. Too disturbed by road crews to identify anything useful.”

”Lantern broken?”

”No.”

”Lit?”

”When found.”

Kael looked toward the map.

A missing worker.

A sabotaged bridge.

Knocking beneath it.

Could be connected.

Could be three separate things people had already woven together because uncertainty hated loneliness.

”What does the Guild classify it as?”

Galahad smiled faintly.

”Investigation.”

”No rank?”

”Not until we know what we are investigating.”

That was sensible.

Kael disliked how much Galahad had improved at being sensible.

”Who is assigned?”

”Iris is reviewing the scout’s notes.”

Kael looked up.

”She just returned from the Caldera.”

”She volunteered.”

”No.”

Galahad raised an eyebrow.

Kael caught himself.

Not his decision alone.

He corrected.

”Has Anwen cleared her?”

”Yes.”

”Then I withdraw the no.”

Galahad nodded.

Growth.

Irritating growth.

”Anyone else?”

”Perrin Vale for transport and route security. Tavin Holt because if the bridge structure shifts while someone is underneath it, I want someone accustomed to holding formations and supporting weight around.”

Kael nodded.

Good choices.

Both Black Dragon members.

Established.

Useful.

No need to turn every investigation into a gathering of Blackwood’s strongest fighters.

”When do they leave?”

”Tomorrow morning.”

”I am going.”

Galahad looked at the cane.

Kael looked at Galahad.

”No combat contract.”

”This is not currently combat.”

”Anwen?”

”Limited local travel is allowed.”

”You asked?”

”This morning.”

Galahad looked genuinely surprised.

Kael felt offended.

”What?”

”You obtained permission before announcing you would go.”

”I am capable of learning.”

”This needs witnesses.”

Kael ignored him.

”I want to see the bridge.”

”Why?”

”It is House infrastructure.”

”That is not why.”

Kael looked at the map.

Galahad waited.

Kael finally answered.

”Because I approved the replacement timber.”

”That still is not why.”

Kael’s mouth tightened.

Galahad knew him too well.

”I have spent the last several weeks dealing with problems after they became disasters.”

There.

The honest answer.

Kael tapped the bridge marker.

”This one is still small.”

”One missing man is not small to his family.”

Kael looked at him.

”No.”

He corrected himself.

”The threat is still contained.”

”Better.”

”I want to understand it while it is.”

Galahad studied him.

Then nodded.

”You go as House authority.”

Kael frowned.

”Not Guild?”

”No.”

”Why?”

”Because you are not a registered Guild adventurer.”

Kael stared.

Galahad almost smiled.

”You built an Adventure Guild and never registered.”

”I own the building.”

”That is not how membership works.”

”I funded it.”

”Still not how membership works.”

”I appointed you.”

”An increasingly questionable decision.”

Kael folded his arms.

”What does registration require?”

Galahad’s smile vanished into something far more dangerous.

”Paperwork.”

Kael looked toward the door.

Perhaps the bridge could survive without him.

Galahad laughed.

”Coward.”

”I killed the Ash-King.”

”With help.”

”And survived the Caldera.”

”Also with help.”

”I am not afraid of paperwork.”

”Good.”

Galahad pushed a registration form toward him.

Kael stared.

”You already had that?”

”I have been waiting months.”

Kael looked at the form.

Then at Galahad.

”You planned this.”

”Yes.”

”Why?”

”Because you keep walking into Guild business while refusing to become an actual member.”

”I am the territorial lord.”

”And if you take Guild contracts personally, you follow Guild rules.”

Kael looked toward the main hall.

People moved past the open doorway.

Adventurers.

Contractors.

Scouts.

People who had no Imperial surname to rescue them from procedure.

Kael looked back at the registration sheet.

Maybe that mattered.

”What rank?”

”You do not receive one automatically because you are a prince.”

”I did not ask for one automatically.”

”Your face did.”

”My face is becoming slandered across Blackwood.”

Galahad placed an ink pen beside the form.

”Basic registration first. Competency assessment later.”

Kael stared.

”You have watched me fight.”

”I have watched you almost die several times.”

”That should count as practical experience.”

”It counts as evidence.”

Kael sat.

He began filling out the form.

Name.

Kael Aurelius Asterion.

Age.

Seventeen.

Primary residence.

Blackwood Manor.

Occupation.

He stopped.

Galahad watched.

Kael looked up.

”What?”

”Nothing.”

”What do I write?”

”Whatever you actually do.”

Kael stared at the line.

Prince seemed useless.

Lord was technically correct.

Magic Swordsman described combat.

Founder of House Kael sounded self-important.

Territorial administrator sounded like Edwin had possessed him.

He wrote:

Lord of Blackwood / Magic Swordsman

Galahad read it upside down.

”Acceptable.”

Kael continued.

Primary weapon.

Sword.

Magical affinities.

He stopped again.

Ice.

Light.

Blood.

Dormant Dark?

Ice Spirit?

Aura was not affinity.

The System definitely did not belong on a Guild registration form.

Galahad noticed his hesitation.

”Only abilities relevant to field safety.”

That helped.

Kael wrote Ice and Light.

Then stopped.

Blood Manipulation mattered in field safety.

It could save his life.

It could also create questions.

Galahad watched him.

Kael looked up.

”You know.”

”Yes.”

”Does the Guild require public disclosure?”

”No. Restricted capability records exist for abilities someone does not want posted.”

That surprised Kael.

”Why?”

”Because an adventurer with a rare ability should not have to announce it to every criminal reading the roster.”

Good system.

Kael added Blood Manipulation under restricted capability.

No Ice Spirit.

Not understood enough.

No Dark.

Dormant.

No System.

Never.

Combat path.

Magic Swordsman.

Experience.

Kael looked at Galahad.

”How much space do you have?”

Galahad laughed.

”Write ’field experienced.’”

”That seems insulting.”

”It is generous considering your relationship with procedure.”

Kael wrote it.

Then came emergency contact.

He stopped.

The line felt strangely personal.

Who did a prince list?

The Emperor?

Edwin?

Darius?

Galahad leaned over.

”Usually the person we notify if you die.”

Kael looked at him.

”That explanation did not help.”

”Edwin.”

Kael wrote Edwin.

Then reconsidered.

”He will be furious.”

”If you die?”

”If someone brings him more paperwork.”

Galahad laughed again.

Kael finished.

He signed.

Galahad took the page.

”Congratulations.”

”That is all?”

”For registration.”

Kael stared.

”You made it sound worse.”

”I wanted you to sit down.”

Kael pointed at him.

”You abuse institutional authority.”

”Put it in writing.”

Kael hated the Guild.

He also felt unexpectedly satisfied.

Galahad retrieved a small blank Guild marker.

”No rank until assessment.”

Kael took it.

Plain wood reinforced with a thin metal edge.

No grand prince’s symbol.

No House crest.

Just his registration number.

He turned it between his fingers.

”Everyone gets this?”

”At first.”

Good.

Kael slipped it into his coat.

”When do we leave tomorrow?”

”After breakfast.”

”Early.”

”After breakfast.”

”I can eat on the road.”

”Lily spoke to me.”

Kael closed his eyes.

There was no escape.

The report from Stonebrook arrived before sunset.

It came with mud on the messenger’s boots and enough urgency that Edwin let the man into the manor before protocol had finished deciding where he belonged.

Kael met him in the lower hall.

The road foreman was middle-aged, broad through the shoulders, and breathing hard from the ride. He removed his cap when he saw Kael, then seemed uncertain whether to bow.

Kael waved the problem away.

”The bridge.”

The man nodded.

”It dropped again.”

”How much?”

”Another few inches on the western end.”

Kael’s expression hardened.

”Anyone on it?”

”No, Your Highness. We blocked traffic after the Guild notice.”

Good.

”Missing worker?”

The foreman’s face changed.

”No sign.”

Kael waited.

There was more.

The man swallowed.

”We heard him.”

The lower hall went quiet.

Edwin stood beside Kael.

”What do you mean?”

The foreman looked between them.

”Under the bridge.”

Kael’s fingers tightened around the cane.

”When?”

”About two hours before I left.”

”What did you hear?”

”Knocking.”

Galahad’s earlier report returned immediately.

”How many people were there?”

”Six.”

”Everyone heard it?”

”Four did. Two were farther up the road.”

”Could it have been timber shifting?”

The foreman shook his head.

”It stopped when we shouted.”

Kael felt the back of his neck tighten.

”Then?”

”It started again.”

”Pattern?”

The man hesitated.

”Three knocks.”

Kael waited.

”Pause.”

Another swallow.

”Three more.”

Edwin looked at Kael.

The foreman continued.

”We tried going underneath.”

Kael’s voice sharpened.

”Why?”

The man flinched.

Kael lowered his tone.

”No. Forget that. What happened?”

”We reached the western footing. Heard the knocks below us.”

”Below?”

”Yes.”

Kael frowned.

The bridge crossed a river.

”Below you where?”

The foreman’s face had gone pale.

”That is why I came.”

Kael waited.

”The sound was not coming from the bridge.”

Silence settled.

”It was coming from under the riverbank.”

Kael looked toward Edwin.

The Steward’s expression remained composed.

Only his visible eye changed.

”Cave?”

”We did not know there was one.”

”Drainage culvert?”

”No culvert there.”

Kael thought of the cut support beams.

The dropped bridge.

The missing worker.

Three knocks.

Not proof of anything.

Enough to act.

”Did anyone enter?”

”No.”

Good.

The foreman continued.

”The ground near the footing cracked while we were there.”

”How badly?”

”Enough that we left.”

Better.

Kael nodded.

”No one goes beneath the bridge tonight.”

”Yes, Your Highness.”

”Not road workers. Not villagers. Not someone’s cousin who claims he knows caves.”

The foreman almost smiled.

”There is one of those.”

”There always is.”

Edwin stepped forward.

”Stonebrook should close the approach on both sides. Put watchers far enough back that another collapse does not take them with it.”

The foreman nodded.

Kael added, ”No fires near the crack.”

The man frowned.

”Gas?”

”Possibly.”

The Caldera had improved Kael’s opinion of invisible gas.

By making it much worse.

”Send anyone living closest to the bridge away for the night if there is any ground movement near their homes.”

”There are two farmhouses.”

”Move them.”

The foreman nodded.

Kael looked toward the darkening windows.

Tomorrow had become too far away.

He hated that thought.

Then he remembered the Caldera.

Going injured at night because urgency felt righteous had nearly become a habit.

He looked toward Edwin.

The Steward was waiting.

Not telling him what to do.

Waiting to see whether Kael would.

”Guild team leaves at first light.”

Edwin nodded.

”I will send word.”

”Add two road engineers.”

”No new combat personnel?”

Kael thought.

”No.”

If this was structural, more swords would accomplish nothing.

If it became combat, the team could withdraw.

That was the rule.

Understand first.

Escalate second.

”Notify Grom.”

Edwin nodded.

”He remains acting field authority.”

”Yes.”

”What about Darius?”

Kael looked toward the upper floor.

Darius would want to know.

He would also want to come.

”No.”

Edwin almost smiled.

”I did not ask whether he was joining.”

”You were going to.”

”I see this habit has spread.”

Kael ignored him.

”Tell Darius. He stays here.”

”Yes.”

The foreman shifted.

”Your Highness.”

Kael looked toward him.

”There is one more thing.”

Of course there was.

”What?”

The man removed something from his coat.

A small object wrapped in cloth.

He placed it on the table.

Kael unfolded the fabric.

Wood.

A broken wedge.

Dark from water.

One end showed a straight cut.

The other carried shallow scratches.

Three lines.

Kael stared.

”Where did you find this?”

”Beside the crack.”

Edwin leaned closer.

The three scratches were too evenly spaced to be random.

Not letters.

Not a Guild mark.

Not anything Kael recognized.

”Did the missing worker carry this?”

”No.”

”Road crew tool?”

”No.”

Kael turned it over.

The wood smelled wet.

River water.

Earth.

And something else.

Faint.

Metallic.

He did not touch it with bare skin.

Progress.

”What do you think it is?” Edwin asked.

Kael looked toward the foreman.

”I do not.”

Then toward the wrapped wedge.

”And I am going to keep it that way until someone who knows more examines it.”

Edwin nodded.

Good.

No instant theory.

No declaration of sabotage.

No monster invented because the mystery wanted a face.

Kael wrapped the object again.

”Put it with the Guild report.”

The foreman bowed.

Kael stopped him before he left.

”Your worker.”

The man turned.

”What is his status?”

The foreman’s face tightened.

”Still missing.”

Kael nodded.

”Then that is the first priority tomorrow.”

Not the bridge.

Not the scratches.

Not whoever cut the supports.

A person.

The foreman bowed again and left.

Kael remained in the hall.

Edwin stood beside him.

After a moment, Edwin looked at the cane.

Kael looked at him.

”No.”

”I said nothing.”

”You were going to tell me not to go.”

”I was going to ask whether you are physically capable.”

Kael considered the distinction.

”Yes.”

”According to whom?”

”Anwen.”

Edwin’s eyebrow rose.

”For local travel.”

”Yes.”

”Not underground exploration.”

”I am aware.”

Edwin waited.

Kael sighed.

”I do not enter anything unstable unless the inspection team clears it.”

”Good.”

”I do not fight unless retreat becomes impossible.”

”Better.”

”I use the cane.”

”Excellent.”

Kael glared.

Edwin’s mouth shifted.

”You are learning.”

Kael looked toward the western windows.

Somewhere beyond them, a damaged bridge waited outside Stonebrook.

One man was missing.

Something had cut replacement supports from beneath.

Knocking came from under a riverbank where no passage was supposed to exist.

Small problem.

Contained problem.

The sort of problem Blackwood should be able to solve before it became anything larger.

Kael preferred it already.

Not because someone was missing.

Because this time, House Kael had institutions ready before disaster arrived.

The Guild had opened the contract.

The road crew had closed traffic.

The foreman had reported strange evidence instead of hiding it.

Edwin had procedures.

Grom had authority.

Kael had learned, painfully, that not knowing was not permission to invent certainty.

Tomorrow they would go to Stonebrook.

They would inspect the bridge.
