The Ace Bigshot Becomes A Farmgirl

The villagers who had been blocking the entrance moved aside, opening a path for Shu Yu and the others to walk through.

The Ruan family brothers watched her back from behind, exchanged a look, and gritted their teeth as they whispered, ”What do we do now?”

”What else can we do? Are you really thinking about stopping her?”

”She wouldn’t be thinking of destroying the mourning hall, would she? Have all the axes been put away at home?”

”Stop saying nonsense. Even if she is immature, she wouldn’t do such a thing, right? Disturbing the peace of the deceased—she wouldn’t dare risk getting struck by lightning. If she causes trouble in the mourning hall, the villagers’ spit alone could drown her.”

The two brothers spoke softly, while the onlooking villagers exchanged puzzled glances.

Until Shu Yu walked into the main hall and stopped, everyone held their breath.

The two daughters-in-law of the Ruan family were kneeling in front of the mourning hall with the children, burning paper and crying. When they saw her approaching, they paused.

Once the Ruan family brothers came in, everyone in the family was on high alert, bracing for Shu Yu to suddenly make a move.

However, Shu Yu merely glanced at them and then lifted her head, looking at the mourning hall before her.

The mourning hall was exceedingly simple, with barely any offerings on the table. Well, it’s true—the Ruan family is no longer what it once was, especially with half of their courtyard still lying in ruins.

Not to mention the Ruan family brothers’ injuries, living worse with each passing day.

What a pity—things have come to this, and they still have schemes against her mother.

Shu Yu stood quietly in front of the mourning hall for a long time, watched by the villagers of Ruan Family Village for a long while.

Until she curiously turned her head and looked at the Ruan family brothers, ”The incense...”

The Ruan family brothers paused, hesitated for a moment, and then handed her the lit incense.

By rights, as Old Lady Ruan’s junior, Shu Yu should kneel and bow to her. But Shu Yu did not kneel, and the others dared not remind her.

The Ruan family brothers feared she might retaliate and directly cause damage.

Village Chief Ruan didn’t want to offend her, either. If it were Madam Ruan, it would have been fine—but since it was Shu Yu, he had to abandon his plan.

The other villagers were even less likely to invite trouble. She’s the county magistrate’s daughter; who would dare make her kneel before the ’elder’ who sold her off?

Thus, Shu Yu simply placed the incense into the incense burner, then stepped back, handing the candles and paper money to the Ruan family brothers.

The eldest son of the Ruan family let out a secret sigh of relief; with the incense offered, it seemed time for her to leave.

He quickly called to his wife, ”Mother, shouldn’t you take our guest outside for tea?”

The eldest son’s wife stiffly stepped forward to invite her, but unexpectedly, Shu Yu raised her hand, ”No rush, I want to have a word with Grandmother.”

Everyone, ”...” What words are there to say?

Shu Yu then took out a handkerchief, dabbed at her eyes, and immediately began to walk towards the back of the mourning hall.

The Ruan family brothers were startled and hurriedly followed her at a close pace.

At the back lay Old Lady Ruan’s coffin. The lid had been put on, but not nailed down yet.

Shu Yu didn’t make any other moves, softly sighed, and said, ”Grandmother, I’ve come to accompany you for a chat. Although we’ve had quite a few grievances in the past, now that you’ve gone, let bygones be bygones like passing clouds.”

Ying Xi very astutely brought over a chair, saying considerately, ”Miss, your knee is injured; you shouldn’t stand for too long, nor kneel. Please sit. I believe Grandmother Ruan would care for you and wouldn’t blame you.”

Everyone, ”...” To actually sit down and talk—this seems like it’s going to be a long conversation.
