The Ace Bigshot Becomes A Farmgirl

Chapter 1910: Chapter 1910: The House and Shop Have Both Been Sold

taels for a waiter’s courtyard is reasonable.

But that was more than thirty years ago. Over the years, with the renovations and expansions by the Chen Family, it should be worth at least 350 to 400 taels by now.

That’s under normal circumstances, but the sale of this courtyard by the Chen Family was anything but normal.

In the evening, Third Lu came back excitedly and said, ”The Chen Family’s house was sold. Guess how much it went for.”

Everyone was having dinner at the table. Uncle Meng, who knew Chenggu County best, thought for a moment and said, ”380 taels?”

Third Lu shook his head, and Meng Qi guessed, ”400 taels? This area is quite bustling now.”

”That’s not right either.”

Everyone had taken a guess, mostly estimating upwards of 300 taels.

When it was Shu Yu’s turn, she looked at Third Lu’s mysterious expression and thought for a moment, ”240 taels?”

In fact, she initially thought of saying 250 taels, but 250 didn’t sound nice, so she reduced it by ten taels.

Unexpectedly, Third Lu’s eyes widened, he gave her a thumbs up, ”Yu, you’re amazing. How did you guess?”

Everyone was stunned, ”Really 240 taels? That’s way too low, isn’t it?”

Meng Pei asked Shu Yu, ”Yu, do you know the reason?”

”I just felt from Third Uncle’s expression that it couldn’t be too high. And considering the Chen Family’s reputation, the incident with Chen Bing should have spread around here, making many people feel it’s ominous.”

Shu Yu thought of the grand house with an entrance to the black market tunnel. That place had been rumored to be unlucky, haunted daily, with owners meeting bad ends, causing no one to dare go near for many years, preserving the secret tunnel entrance.

This made it clear that the people of Chenggu County were quite superstitious about these matters.

Third Lu nodded as he listened, ”Exactly, I’ve heard many people pointing fingers at the Chen Family, saying living in that house would bring bad luck.”

It wasn’t just one person having trouble in the Chen Family; the entire family was in trouble.

Chen Bing colluded with a rebel, Ms. Pan committed adultery, Chen He divorced his wife, and Chen Qiu had a bad reputation. People felt like they were hearing fantasies when they heard about these things, so even if they wanted to buy the house, they were currently in a wait-and-see state.

Moreover, the house was put for sale urgently, to be sold in three days.

Rich people who could afford a house wouldn’t fancy this place, and those who couldn’t afford it wouldn’t have time to gather the money in a few days.

”Initially, the authorities auctioned it at 280 taels, but no one was interested. So, the price kept dropping until someone finally bought it for 240 taels.”

The old lady frowned, ”The house sold at such a low price, the store can’t go for much higher, right?” She worriedly looked at Granny Fang, ”I hope they can still come up with the 600 taels to pay you back.”

”They probably will,” Shu Yu replied, ”The house went for 240 taels. The store should sell for about 300 taels, and the Chen Family originally had savings of a few hundred taels.”

The shop differs from the house. The Chen Family’s general store is in a good location, profitable for businessmen, and easier to sell than a house.

Indeed, as Shu Yu predicted, the next day, the Chen Family’s general store also sold, closing at a price of 320 taels.

Thus, they had a total of 560 taels.

The Chen Family originally had around 310 taels in savings, including fifty taels brought as a dowry by Ms. Pan when she married into the family.
