The Ace Bigshot Becomes A Farmgirl

Chapter 1812: Chapter 1812: We’re Sneaking Away

As she was just feeling sentimental, someone suddenly held her left hand.

Shu Yu turned her head and heard Meng Yunzheng whisper, ”I’ll take you to set off fireworks later. I brought them back for you from the prefecture.”

Shu Yu couldn’t help but laugh, ”I’m not a three-year-old child.”

”It’s too dangerous for a three-year-old. Someone your age is just right.”

The water Shu Yu had just drunk nearly made her choke. She turned and glared at him. Meng Yunzheng’s lips curled up as he handed over the handkerchief, paused, and then said, ”After the new year, there won’t be much going on in the prefecture with Qi Lie around. I’ll have the time to spare. By then, we’ll secretly return to Dongan Province.”

”Why secretly though?”

Meng Yunzheng sighed, ”Lord Qi is more than willing to have someone here to share his workload. Even if we wanted to walk out openly, he’d have to agree to let us go first.”

If Meng Yunzheng wasn’t concerned about seeming too inconsiderate, he’d have shirked his duties. Over the past few days of the New Year celebrations, Qi Lie practically wished to keep Meng Yunzheng in the prefecture.

Shu Yu thought about Qi Lie, who couldn’t return to the capital for the New Year, and nodded in agreement.

After the New Year’s Eve dinner, Meng Yunzheng indeed took out all kinds of fireworks for everyone to play with.

The youngest in the Meng family was Meng Han, and this year the little girl was particularly happy. In previous years, her mother always invited her uncle’s family over to liven things up. Her little cousin from her uncle’s family was a handful, treating the entire Meng family as his playground, demanding whatever he wanted.

If she didn’t give in, her uncle, aunt, and mother would lecture her collectively, as if it were unreasonable for someone her age to bicker with a child, making it difficult to enjoy the New Year’s festivities peacefully.

This year was different. With her cousin and Sister Shuyu around, Meng Han had the New Year’s Eve she had always dreamed of.

She went over to pull Shu Yu along to play. She knew on such a festive day, Sister Shuyu would surely miss her own family.

That day continued with merriment until late, and the crackling of firecrackers could be heard into the night.

The noise persisted until dawn when it finally started to subside, and Shu Yu changed into new clothes to freshen up.

On the first day of the New Year, there wasn’t much to do, and Shu Yu planned to stroll around the streets.

Unexpectedly, as soon as she stepped out of her room, Meng Yunzheng was already there waiting, holding a red envelope, ”Happy New Year.”

”Happy New Year,” Shu Yu replied, accepting it without hesitation, and she squeezed it with a smile. It seemed to contain silver notes, probably no less than ten taels.

She originally thought one red envelope was enough, but during breakfast, both Meng Pei and Uncle Meng gave her one too.

Shu Yu suddenly felt a bit embarrassed, ”I came of age the year before last, why are you still giving me red envelopes?”

”In our hearts, no matter the age, you’re the younger generation, still a child, whether or not you’ve come of age doesn’t matter much.” Meng Pei laughed heartily, ”Just accept it happily. It’s not a large red envelope, but during the New Year, it’s about celebrating and sharing a bit of joy.”

Even Ms. Tao, who seldom did, chimed in, ”Yes, and you’re spending your first New Year with the Meng family. Because of us, you couldn’t return to your parents for the holiday, so this red envelope is a gesture of our goodwill.”

Shu Yu wasn’t one to be overly modest, so she accepted them straightforwardly.

Not only her but unmarried Meng Yunzheng, Meng Han, and Meng Qi also received theirs.

After leaving the flower hall, Meng Han immediately tore open her red envelope to see, and was shocked to find five taels of silver inside, her eyes widened with surprise.

She secretly told Shu Yu, ”In previous years, the New Year’s money my brother and I combined didn’t amount to this much.”
