The Ace Bigshot Becomes A Farmgirl

Chapter 1639: Chapter 1639: The Meng Family in Ruins

With a tight-lipped expression, Meng Yunzheng muttered, ”So, having the Fifth Prince ascend to power is the right choice.”

If the Second Prince or the Third Prince were chosen, those two who have no moral bottom line and disregard the lives of common people, that would truly bring disaster to the people of the nation.

Shu Yu took a deep breath. Indeed, the Second Prince and the Third Prince are morally corrupt, targeting common people, which makes them unfit to be emperors.

Leading their horses, they continued to walk inside at a slow pace, their eyes cautious, scanning the surroundings.

Just before they left, a soldier reminded them, ”The authorities are short-handed right now, so be careful. There are remnants of mountain bandits hiding in the town. If you notice anything unusual, protect yourselves and immediately report it to patrolling soldiers.”

The local soldiers are limited in number; some are besieging a large group of mountain bandits, some are stationed at the city gate to prevent any unexpected incidents, and others are conducting house-to-house searches within the town.

But these mountain bandits are obviously organized and very cunning. It’s unclear which rat hole they’re hiding in, as they can’t be found at all.

Originally, the nearby county town and prefecture said they would send reinforcements. However, just a few days ago, they too encountered harassment from scattered mountain bandits. Although they were only startled and didn’t suffer as heavy losses as Chenggu County, they are now hesitant to easily dispatch soldiers.

Meng Yunzheng expressed his gratitude, ”Thank you, you’ve worked hard.”

He couldn’t tell whose men these soldiers were or if they knew who orchestrated all this.

But at that moment, they appeared with an ashen look, their dark circles evident, clearly busy and lacking rest.

Shu Yu and the others continued on their way to the Meng family residence, which was in the more central part of the county town.

They encountered slightly more people compared to the area near the city gate.

Most of these people were poor families setting up small stalls to sell vegetables or trinkets, or ordinary townspeople out shopping.

They looked quite weary, mostly appearing to be still recovering from the shock, and when they saw them, they dared not approach, speaking in hushed tones as if raising their voices might invite trouble.

Shu Yu understood that they had no choice. For the sake of their livelihoods, even though the town was still unsafe, they had to come out to support their families.

Most of the shops along the street were closed, with only a few general stores or grain shops still open for business, but even those had just one or two people inside.

The entire street was incredibly quiet; no one dared to speak loudly, and if something sold out, it would immediately be packed up and taken away.

Once they reached the Meng family residence, the four of them couldn’t help but heave a sigh of relief.

The escort agency’s main gate was shut tight. Meng Yunzheng let go of the reins and approached to knock on the door. As he stepped onto the stairs, he paused in his tracks, his expression changing.

Shu Yu was a step behind him, ”What’s wrong?”

Meng Yunzheng looked at the door lock with tension in his eyes, ”It seems someone has broken into the Meng family residence.”

There was blood on the door lock.

With a sinking feeling in her heart, Shu Yu quickly knocked on the door, but there was no response from inside.

She immediately exerted force and pushed open both doors heavily.

Indeed, the doors weren’t bolted from the inside; they swung open with a push.

However, when they saw the scene inside, their expressions grew even more serious.

The entire front yard was in disarray: planters were knocked over, stone benches were overturned with their legs strewn around, and the weapon racks once placed in the corner for the Escort Sect to practice were split in half, devoid of any weapons.
