The Ace Bigshot Becomes A Farmgirl

Chapter 1614: Chapter 1614: Wedding in a Month

The Xu Family felt uneasy, but considering their daughter’s disgraceful action, they didn’t have the courage to ask for a high bride price. At the very least, there should be something to show for it; you can’t give nothing at all, or the Ge Family would lose face.

The Xu Family felt this way, and Xu Cai was even more against it.

She believed she was no worse than Lanhua. How could her bride price be lower than Lanhua’s?

Xu Cai had inquired about Lanhua’s bride price, which was a full thirty taels, a sum enough to cause quite a stir.

That Yu Fenglin was just a blacksmith. Although he also ran a small shop, he had no parents or anyone to support him. Earlier, his family had debts, and he worked alone at blacksmithing. Offering thirty taels showed real sincerity.

It’s known that bride prices those days were given to the bride’s parents. However, since Madam Li doted on her daughter and the family didn’t lack money, she only kept five taels for appearance’s sake, while the rest was used as dowry and taken by Lanhua.

When Shuyou first got married, Madam Ruan made her take the entire bride price as a security.

Madam Li considered herself generous; how could she be less than Madam Ruan?

When Xu Cai heard about this, she was quite envious. Typically, bride prices in villages were no more than five taels. But the Ge Family ran a tofu shop, did some small business—surely they could manage thirty taels?

At that time, Xu Cai felt Ge Qifei loved her deeply. Having been spoiled by Lanhua’s thirty taels, she thought she must have the same amount for her marriage.

But she hadn’t considered whether her own family could provide a corresponding dowry if the groom actually offered that much.

Therefore, when Xu Cai brought up the bride price amount, both the Ge Family and the Xu Family thought she was crazy.

The Ge Family turned and left immediately. Ge Qifei flipped the table, calling Xu Cai a fantasist and ‘fallen willow and decaying flower.’

The first conversation ended unhappily.

Later, neighbors of the Xu Family said that the Xu Family was noisy and argumentative that night. Father Xu slapped Xu Cai, who cried throughout most of the night.

Then the next day, when the Xu Family spoke of the bride price again, it had already dropped from the originally planned two taels to one tael.

The Ge Family truly didn’t want to bring this troublemaker into their home, but the incident of the two rolling in the sunflower field caused quite a stir. This matter was overseen personally by the village chief of Shangshi Village. If they reneged, Fan Zhong wouldn’t be able to face people and might want to go complain to the mayor.

In the end, no one asked for Xu Cai’s opinion, and the bride price was set at one tael of silver. As for any jewelry, there was no need to even think about it.

Under such circumstances, it’s easy to imagine the life Xu Cai and Ge Qifei had after marriage.

When Lanhua heard about this, she was truly shocked. Madam Li advised her to stay away from Xu Cai in the future and preferably not even speak to her.

Lanhua merely responded blankly. But who would have thought that, upon returning, she’d pass right by a worn-out Xu Cai while sitting in the mule carriage?

Lanhua opened her mouth to say something, but the other glared at her viciously.

Unbelievable.

Lanhua wasn’t without temper. She glared back with great disdain and pulled down the curtain.

From that point on, the two officially went their separate ways.

Shu Yu asked, “Is the wedding date set?”

“Mm, Mother said, probably mid-October.”

The old lady exclaimed, “Isn’t that too soon? It’s already September 10th, just one month?”

Lanhua sighed, “Xu Cai is already with Ge Qifei. Both families fear that if it’s any later, she might start showing. Besides, this is a scandal for both families; they don’t want to make a big deal of it and don’t need much preparation.”
