This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

Doctor Zheng and his Director exchanged glances, their eyes wide with disbelief. However, Du Heng’s imposing presence left them momentarily speechless.

Du Heng was right. While the Second Affiliated Hospital of JZU was indeed the best hospital in Jinzhou overall, their Neurology department lagged behind the Provincial First Hospital. And when it came to treating psychiatric conditions, they weren’t even fit to hold a candle to the Municipal Third Hospital, which specialized in mental illnesses.

Meanwhile, Wang Zhenzhen’s relatives—her husband’s uncles and their wives—were growing increasingly displeased. They looked at Du Heng with doubt, unable to understand why this young man dared to lash out at the doctors from the Second Affiliated Hospital of JZU. Moreover, they couldn’t comprehend why Wang Zhenzhen was so obedient to this young man. At the simple words, ”Discharge him,” Wang Zhenzhen hadn’t hesitated in the slightest, immediately gathering their belongings to complete the procedures.

However, Du Heng’s aura at that moment was overwhelming. Unsure of who this formidable young man truly was, they turned their attention to Wang Zhenzhen. ”Zhenzhen, you can’t be impulsive! Daoyang can’t be discharged now.”

”Sister-in-law, with my brother’s current condition, you can’t act on impulse. It will delay his treatment.”

”Sister-in-law, the Second Affiliated Hospital of JZU is the best hospital here. Let’s just listen to the doctors.”

Her husband’s family members stepped forward to dissuade her, but Wang Zhenzhen remained unmoved. She said calmly, ”I know what I’m doing. You don’t need to persuade me. If one option means he can’t be completely cured, and the other means he can, how should I choose?”

Then, she calmly glanced at the relatives chattering around her. ”Do you know who Xiao Heng is? Do you know how capable he is? You don’t. You only care about this hospital’s reputation.”

Saying this, she turned and began to pack Gong Daoyang’s belongings. ”You might think it’s enough for Gong to be able to manage basic self-care, but I don’t,” she continued firmly.

”He’s only thirty-seven years old; his life has barely begun. Why should he have to settle for just being able to care for himself?

”He still has three children and two elderly parents to support. Can any of you help raise them?”

Wang Zhenzhen’s tone was remarkably calm, yet her words instantly silenced the chattering relatives.

Indeed, what they considered a good outcome was merely the bare minimum acceptable for Wang Zhenzhen, Gong Daoyang, and their family. Good? How could that possibly be considered good?

For a moment, all of Gong Daoyang’s family members looked towards the Director, the one Du Heng had just called a hypocrite. Simultaneously, the other doctors on the ward round also turned to face their Director.

The Director’s face flushed, alternating between red and pale, as waves of heat washed over his cheeks. Everyone anticipated their Director would assert his authority and teach this presumptuous young man a harsh lesson.

But when the Director finally spoke, his words left them utterly flabbergasted.

”President Du, you’re a renowned physician in Jinzhou. Please don’t hold it against Doctor Zheng; he simply misspoke earlier. Be the bigger person and don’t take it to heart.”

The Director managed an awkward smile, acting as if nothing was amiss. ”President Du,” he invited, ”why don’t we adjourn to my office to discuss the patient’s condition in detail? What do you say?”

At this, not only the medical staff and family members present were dumbfounded, but even Du Heng himself felt as though he’d been forced to swallow something disgusting.

Du Heng turned to look at the Director, then at Doctor Zheng. ”’Be the bigger person’? Did the Director misspeak? I’m only thirty this year. Doctor Zheng looks to be at least thirty-five or thirty-six. How am I the ’adult’ here, and Doctor Zheng the ’petty person’? Besides, given Doctor Zheng’s earlier remarks about traditional Chinese medicine, I wouldn’t dare presume to be the ’adult’ in this situation,” he said, leaving Doctor Zheng flushing red with embarrassment once more.

Just as Doctor Zheng was about to speak, the Director interjected, still smiling. ”President Du, you are the externally appointed Deputy Director of the Provincial First Hospital, an Internet Celebrity Doctor with ten million fans, and a recipient of the Second Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress. Furthermore, you are the Dean of the Municipal Maternal and Child Health Hospital. From any standpoint, you are deserving of such respect. Xiao Zheng, hurry up and apologize to President Du. Your reckless words have clearly caused offense.”

Doctor Zheng’s face burned, especially under the gazes of those around him. He almost choked, caught in a dilemma where apologizing felt as wrong as not apologizing.

But Du Heng suddenly paused. ”You know who I am?”

The Director chuckled, saying nonchalantly, ”President Du, you’re a star doctor in our city. Lately, on the Apricot Forest Forum, there’s been much talk about your exploits in the Capital. Your competition with the students of Luqi National Medicine Master has become a hot topic online. Although it fizzled out somewhat at the end, it has only served to spread your fame far and wide, greatly boosting your reputation.”

A surge of anger welled up in Du Heng’s chest. Dammit, he thought. They know who I am, so this must be directed at me.

Realizing this, Du Heng suddenly laughed. ”So, you know who I am and yet you still speak this way. It seems you harbor significant hostility towards traditional Chinese medicine—so much so that you’re willing to disregard a patient’s well-being. Excellent. Truly excellent.”

”It seems I’ll have to have a serious discussion with Director Zhuo of the Traditional Chinese Medicine Administration. He invests tens of millions of yuan into this field annually, yet in your eyes, it’s merely ’nutritional medicine.’ If that’s the case, then he’s completely blind, utterly clueless! His understanding, it seems, isn’t even as profound as that of an attending Physician at the Second Affiliated Hospital of JZU.”
