This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

”When the two qi are in disorder and Yin and Yang cannot achieve balance, Yang separates from Yin, leading to Yang deficiency, and Yin separates from Yang, leading to Yin deficiency. When neither can support the other, their separation becomes rapid. If both Yin and Yang are lost, the harmony of water and fire will be disrupted, and the spirit will lose its autonomy,” Du Heng explained slowly. He paused briefly before continuing, ”If Doctor Guan were over fifty, he would indeed face a life-threatening situation after the dual loss of Yin and Yang. Fortunately, Doctor Guan is only thirty and in robust physical condition. He survived the crisis of spirit separation stemming from this dual loss, but it has resulted in his current symptoms of a fractured spirit, leading to this manic illness.”

After another short pause, he looked at everyone present and continued, ”In other words, Doctor Guan’s problem lies in the severance of water and fire, and the dual loss of Yin and Yang. If water and fire cannot be made to support each other again, then Doctor Guan’s manic illness cannot be fundamentally cured. As long as he experiences significant emotional fluctuations that he cannot control, the manic illness will inevitably recur.

”Moreover, the longer this condition persists, the greater the damage to Doctor Guan’s body, and the more difficult it will be to treat.

”Excessive physical depletion will also impact Doctor Guan’s lifespan.”

As soon as Du Heng finished speaking, images of several mentally ill patients who had died young flashed through the mind of the Director of Psychiatry Department.

The same images also appeared in the minds of Guan Bo’s parents and Zhang Dewen.

However, of all those present, only Zhang Dewen truly understood what Du Heng was saying; the others only grasped it vaguely.

The concepts of Yin and Yang sounded plausible, but they didn’t know if Du Heng’s analysis was correct.

So, for a moment, everyone looked at Zhang Dewen, hoping he could provide a definitive answer.

Zhang Dewen didn’t even glance at the others, his gaze fixed firmly on Du Heng.

After a long silence, Zhang Dewen took a deep breath and asked, ”Doctor Du, have you treated brain diseases before? Are there any cured cases?”

”Yes, but not many.”

”Can you tell us about them?”

”The first case was a student who failed the college entrance examination and developed schizophrenia due to immense pressure. After receiving treatment and recuperating for a year, he retook the exam this year and, I heard, achieved good results.

”The second case was a mother whose young child tragically died. She fell into a state of stupor from grief. She received treatment last June, and now the couple runs an agritourism business and is expecting another child.

”The third case involved witnessing…”

Suddenly, Du Heng stopped, unwilling to speak of the past involving Zhao Xinfang.

Zhang Dewen, being an experienced man, understood that the last case must have touched upon a sensitive subject, so he didn’t press further.

However, the first two cases Du Heng mentioned were enough to rekindle a flicker of hope within him.

”Doctor Du possesses extensive knowledge and is proficient in medical principles. I am truly ashamed of my own shortcomings in comparison,” Zhang Dewen said. He could find no fault in Du Heng’s words, especially the idea that the dual loss of Yin and Yang could cause a person’s spirit to lose its autonomy—a concept he had never deeply investigated.

If Du Heng’s understanding was correct, then Du Heng’s current achievements had definitely surpassed his own.

This thought sent a jolt through him.

The youngster was indeed formidable!

It was through witnessing these things firsthand multiple times that the old man finally had to take the young man before him seriously.

Now, everything hinged on the final, crucial step for Guan Bo.

Understanding theory was one aspect; prescribing the right medicine was even more critical.

However, at this point, Zhang Dewen didn’t doubt that Du Heng would have a well-developed plan for the subsequent treatment.

”If we follow Doctor Du’s understanding, then how should we proceed with the treatment?”

Du Heng already had a direction in mind, but without being certain of Guan Bo’s true physical condition, he dared not prescribe rashly. ”First, we treat the manic illness, allowing his spirit to return to unity. Then, we supplement both water and fire, so Yin and Yang can harmonize. However, I must examine Doctor Guan’s physical condition before I can make a final decision on the specific prescription and medication.”

Zhang Dewen nodded again. ”Those are the words of a prudent and experienced person; a very sound line of thought and method. How will Doctor Du examine him?”

”Inspection, Auscultation, Inquiry, and Palpation, followed by a comprehensive analysis of pulse and symptoms.”

”Ah, I’m being muddle-headed,” Zhang Dewen sighed suddenly. ”Shall we go in now, or…?”

Du Heng glanced into the hospital room. ”Let’s administer natarax. Only when he’s calm can we get the most accurate feedback.”

Zhang Dewen immediately turned to the Director of Psychiatry Department. ”Could you please administer natarax for now?”

The Director of Psychiatry Department openly rolled his eyes.

The traditional Chinese medicine approach to treating brain diseases and the Psychiatry Department’s approach to mental illness were fundamentally different, worlds apart even. Thus, their theories of treatment were completely disparate.

So, while he instinctively felt Du Heng’s theory made some sense, he couldn’t accept the connection between such mental illness and the elusive Yin qi and Yang qi. As for the treatment method, that was even more unacceptable.

However, Sir Zhang was an Old Predecessor and an expert in the hospital. He was also the patient’s teacher. Therefore, as long as Sir Zhang’s words posed no clear risk to the patient’s health, the director would generally not refuse his requests.

They had wanted to administer natarax earlier but had been interrupted by Du Heng twice. Now, being told to administer natarax again, the director was quite annoyed.

However, looking at Zhang Dewen and the hopeful eyes of the family members, he didn’t voice his dissatisfaction.

After a day and a night of contact, the nurses had figured out the pattern of Guan Bo’s episodes and quickly injected the natarax.

Once Guan Bo lay down quietly with his eyes closed, Du Heng, Zhang Dewen, and a few others entered the hospital room.

Then, under everyone’s watchful eyes, Du Heng began his thorough examination.

After a considerable time, Du Heng finished. By the time he stood up, the previously incomplete prescription in his mind had been perfected.

Zhang Dewen looked at Du Heng and asked softly, ”Doctor Du, what’s the situation?”

”It’s as I expected.”

”Is it treatable?”

”Yes, it’s treatable.”

Zhang Dewen let out a soft breath. ”When Young Guan is conscious, he has unpredictable fits of mania. Doctor Du, if you are to treat him, will he need to be transferred to the Municipal Mental Hospital to be restrained there before starting treatment?”

Du Heng shook his head. ”Doctor Guan’s onset time was relatively short, and the damage to his body isn’t very severe. The current mania is merely a manifestation of the body’s maladjustment after the dual loss of Yin and Yang.

”His mania will lessen with one dose, and he will stabilize after three doses. Additionally, with the natarax already working in his system and the medicine I’ll prescribe, by the time he wakes up again, it will likely be evening.

”By then, he will have taken all three doses of the decoction medicine. When he reawakens, it will be with his mania calmed and his mind clear.”

Upon hearing such bold words, Guan Bo’s parents couldn’t suppress their excitement. Even Zhang Dewen couldn’t help but gulp.

As for the Director and the psychiatrist from the Psychiatry Department, they kept sizing Du Heng up and down, thinking he was a charlatan full of hot air.

The psychiatrist glanced at Du Heng again, then turned to Zhang Dewen and Guan Bo’s parents. ”Sir Zhang, the ambulance from the Municipal Mental Hospital has arrived. Let’s send the patient down now.”

Zhang Dewen was in a dilemma.

He felt Du Heng was right, but he himself hadn’t researched the things Du Heng spoke of. So, when the critical moment arrived, he hesitated.

After pondering for a moment, he looked at Guan Bo’s parents.

Although their eyes revealed eagerness and hope, they immediately said, ”Sir Zhang, you make the decision. We’ll listen to you.”

Zhang Dewen took a deep breath and said to the Director of Psychiatry Department, ”Let’s not send him yet. We’ll wait one more day.”

The Director of Psychiatry Department immediately frowned. ”Sir Zhang, this is no joke. If the patient wakes up and has another episode, he could hurt himself or our medical staff.

”According to standard procedure, we should have transferred the patient the night before last.

”It was Deputy Dean Tang who authorized him to stay until now, out of consideration for you, Sir Zhang.

”If we delay any longer, it will genuinely be a violation of regulations.”

Hearing this, Zhang Dewen once again turned his gaze to Du Heng.

But Du Heng deliberately avoided eye contact.

After all that’s been said, what more do you expect from me? Do you want me to make oaths or guarantees? If you all can’t make a decision even now, then there’s nothing more for me to say.
