This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

Du Heng’s expression turned terrifyingly grim due to a phone call, and he immediately began packing to return to Jinzhou.

As for what had transpired, one would need to rewind time to three days prior, at the Central Lake Police Station.

Ever since mid-April, when Wang Zhenzhen had given birth to twins for Gong Daoyang, his heart had been thoroughly warmed. He yearned to spend every day nestled close to his wife and children, his paternal love blooming and deepening once more. The roguish air about him also seemed to diminish progressively.

Today marked Wang Zhenzhen’s first day back at the Health Clinic after her maternity leave. Gong Daoyang drove slowly, escorting his wife to her workplace.

”Honey, let me tell you, don’t work too hard. If there’s anything to be done, let others handle it. Don’t try to be a hero and wear yourself out.”

Gong Daoyang, at the wheel, chattered incessantly the entire way, meticulously detailing everything as he worried his wife might face difficulties at work.

Wang Zhenzhen listened with impatience, but she wouldn’t refuse her husband’s kind intentions.

”Alright, alright. I’ve been at this Health Clinic for over a decade. How come, to hear you talk, I suddenly don’t know how to do my job anymore?”

”That may be true, but look at how much has happened at your Health Clinic since you gave birth. So many things!”

When Gong Daoyang saw Wang Zhenzhen wasn’t paying much attention, he continued to fuss, ”Don’t act like you know everything. Look at your Health Clinic; it’s not the same place you worked at for ten years.

In just over a year, its scope has expanded, staff numbers have increased, and there are more leaders too.

And now that Xiao Heng has been transferred out and the new leader is incompetent, the situation at your Health Clinic, you could say, has plummeted.

I heard that when you were still working, there was a surplus every month. Now, the clinic is only staying afloat on its past earnings to pay wages.

This month alone, just from the town meetings, the Health Clinic has been chewed out countless times, and I hear the district authorities are also very dissatisfied.”

Gong Daoyang sighed, dodged an uncle carrying a shovel in front of them, maneuvered around a young woman rushing to work, and continued, ”In these past few months, things have changed so much. It’s nothing like the situation before your leave.

Alas, it’s just that Xiao Heng left; otherwise, I wouldn’t be so worried about you.”

Wang Zhenzhen, bored by her husband’s lecture, idly scrolled through her phone.

Hearing her husband mention Du Heng, she couldn’t help but say, ”It’s a good thing Xiao Heng was transferred. Moving from the township system to city management completely changed his future prospects compared to ours.

Look at you and me, stuck with these township-level authorized jobs. We’re reluctant to quit, but if we don’t, we can see our entire careers laid out before us. What’s the point of working like this?

Sigh, it’s just that everyone only enjoyed higher salaries for a little over half a year, and now we’re going to be knocked back to the old days of two thousand yuan a month. People might find that hard to swallow.”

Gong Daoyang looked at his wife, speechless. ”Here I am, worried about you facing difficulties at work, and you’re over there worrying about other people.”

”Alright, stop worrying about me. You should be more careful at your own job. Don’t push yourself as hard as before. Let the younger ones handle things.

Don’t forget, you have three children to raise now.”

”You and your jinxes!” Gong Daoyang made a spitting sound. ”Pah! It’s not that I want to be tough; it’s just that there are too few people in our unit. Our entire township only has a little over 20,000 people, but they’re very spread out. The slightest incident leaves the station short-handed. Alas, I have no choice. Do you think I don’t want to experience what it’s like to be a leader?”

Wang Zhenzhen was already used to Gong Daoyang’s work habits. She just nagged him a little, reminding him to be mindful and not end up like he did in March when someone smashed his shoulder with a hoe, fracturing it.

Boredly flipping through her phone, Wang Zhenzhen suddenly exclaimed, ”Hey, husband, look! Xiao Heng is in the news.”

Gong Daoyang glanced over while driving. ”That’s not surprising. Xiao Heng is doing better and better. He just won an award from the provincial government last month. I wouldn’t even be surprised if he suddenly appeared on the 7:00 PM news someday.”

As he spoke, Gong Daoyang parked the car in front of the Health Clinic. ”Go on to work, dear. If anyone gives you a hard time, you tell me. Here in Central Lake, your husband still has some face.”

Wang Zhenzhen put away her phone, flipped down the passenger-side visor to check her makeup in the mirror, then opened the door and got out. ”Okay, okay, I know my husband is the best. With you around, no one dares to bully me.

I’m heading in. You should get to work too.”

Waving goodbye, Wang Zhenzhen stepped into the Health Clinic she had been away from for three months. Gong Daoyang watched his wife enter, then turned the car around and headed towards the police station diagonally ahead.

Work at the township police station could be both relaxing and troublesome. Relaxing, because an entire day might pass without a single emergency call. Troublesome, because trivial matters could drive you mad.

Gong Daoyang entered his workplace, changed his clothes, and attended the morning meeting. Ten minutes later, the daily routine was done, and he prepared to enter ’sage mode.’

However, just as everyone was dispersing from the meeting, the first police call came in. ”Chief, Zhao Quanfu’s wife and his mother are fighting again in Zojiwa Village.”

Gong Daoyang’s face immediately darkened. ”Let the village try to mediate first. Tell them if we have to go, we’ll be taking people in.”

”The village already tried to intervene, but Zhao Quanfu’s wife used a knife and injured him. The village leaders couldn’t de-escalate the situation, so they had to call us.”
