This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

Gong Daoyang’s body slammed against Du Da, who showed no sign of surprise.

Once again, he smiled, raised the lighter in his hand, and pressed down hard with his thumb. ”I knew you’d come. Let’s die together; I won’t be at a loss.”

But the moment he finished speaking, his resolute and manic eyes finally showed panic.

The tiny button on the lighter, which usually only required a little pressure to produce a ”CLICK” and a small flame, was now impossible for his thumb to press.

After inhaling gas for a long time, although he could still maintain his sanity, his body had become weak and uncontrollable, which he had not noticed in his manic emotional state.

A small lighter button shouldn’t be what stopped him.

He panicked and tried to press the button with both hands. Surely it would work then.

But once again, things did not go as he expected, as his arms had also become weak and slow.

Du Da panicked and became anxious.

He wanted to die and take these two with him.

But the more nervous he got, the weaker his hands became. Before he could press the button again, Gong Daoyang had already pounced on him. The lighter slipped from his hand, falling to the ground with a ”SNAP”.

Seeing the lighter on the ground, Gong Daoyang felt a sudden surge of joy. While pressing Du Da under him, he also grabbed one of Du Da’s hands with his handcuffed hands.

He wanted to use grappling techniques to control him, but when he exerted force, he realized his whole body had gone soft. Coupled with the strain of inhaling too hard earlier, his vision went black.

Seeing Du Da trying to grab the lighter again, Gong Daoyang had no choice but to abandon control of his arm. Instead, he held onto Du Da tightly, rolling to the side with a burst of strength.

But instead of moving farther away from the lighter, they ended up closer to the gas canister.

With the sudden exertion, his whole body immediately went limp, and it felt like a giant hammer was slamming around in his brain. Not only was his vision black, but his ears began to buzz incessantly.

Feeling Du Da struggling in his arms, Gong Daoyang finally shouted, ”Come in! I’ve got him under control! Hurry in!”

As he shouted, he unconsciously clamped Du Da tightly in his arms.

CLICK.

A flash of light appeared at the door, and Gong Daoyang recognized the village doctor, Du Fei, entering. His vision went black again, and all sounds in his ears were silenced.

”Auntie, Auntie!”

Hearing the shout, Du Fei pulled open the door and rushed in. The heavy gas in the room made him lean back, nearly suffocating him in one breath.

Adjusting himself, Du Fei bent down and hurried to Du Da’s mother’s side. Not caring to check on her initially, he held his breath, picked her up, and ran outside.

After placing her in the courtyard, he immediately turned back and rushed in again. But this time, his father and the village director were unable to separate Gong Daoyang and Du Da; they couldn’t unlock their clenched limbs.

Seeing this, Du Fei reached for their ankles and pulled hard. His father and the village director also reacted, giving up on separating the two and helping him drag them out together.

After dragging them all to the courtyard, Du Fei’s father hurriedly checked on them. Meanwhile, Du Fei fought back dizziness and nausea, rushing in one last time to turn off the leaking gas canister.

When he came out again, he leaned against a fruit tree in the courtyard and began to dry heave.

The nausea made him feel like his stomach was about to turn inside out, but nothing came out other than a bit of acidic fluid.

When the nausea subsided, Du Fei could barely hold onto the tree, golden stars flashing before his eyes.

But before he could catch his breath, his father behind him started calling out, ”Xiao Fei, come take a look! Hurry up!”

Gasping for air, Du Fei managed to find some energy and hurried over.

Breathing like a thread.

For the first time, Du Fei saw what it was like to breathe by a thread.

Other than Gong Daoyang, whose breathing was still relatively strong, both Du Da and his mother were hovering on the edge of suffocation.

”Get them on the car and to the hospital! Gas poisoning!”

With just one glance, Du Fei knew that the situations of Du Da and his mother were beyond his ability to handle.

「As the first starlight appeared」

Gong Daoyang slowly opened his eyes. A teary, beautiful face came into view. Feeling slightly bewildered, he reached out and wiped the tears from the woman’s eyes. ”Why are you crying? I didn’t die.”

Had he not said anything, Wang Zhenzhen would have just sobbed quietly. But upon hearing Gong Daoyang’s voice, she could no longer hold back and wailed loudly, ”You scared me to death!”

Having just woken up, Gong Daoyang’s mind was still relatively clear, but he was a little stunned by Wang Zhenzhen’s crying. He wiped the tears from her face and softly comforted her, ”Don’t cry. See, I’m fine.”

Then he looked around and saw Liu Gong, Instructor Huang, and Hu by his side. ”Old Huang, how are Du Da and his mother?”

Instructor Huang stepped forward. ”Du Da died of kidney failure before reaching the hospital; his mother is still in Municipal First Hospital fighting for her life.”

Before he could finish speaking, his cell phone rang in his pocket.

Glancing at the name, he had no choice but to stop talking and answer the phone first. ”Um... Okay... Please handle the follow-up work.”

After hanging up, Instructor Huang looked at Gong Daoyang. ”Xiao Zhang just called. Du Da’s mother’s rescue efforts were in vain, and she passed away.”

Gong Daoyang’s hand that was wiping away tears froze. ”I can understand if Du Da died due to his health issues, but shouldn’t his mother have been savable?”

Instructor Huang sighed. ”According to what Xiao Zhang relayed from the doctor who tried to save her, Du Da’s mother didn’t show much will to live from the beginning of the rescue. So, the doctor did his best.”

Will to live? How could one have no will to live? What a ridiculous and absurd event. But when applied to Du Da’s mother, it seemed plausible and justifiable.

Gong Daoyang sighed and looked at Wang Zhenzhen again, softly saying, ”Stop crying. I’m fine.”

At this point, Yu Haiting came in. After a check-up on Gong Daoyang, he said, ”You need another IV drip tonight, and we’ll check on you again tomorrow morning. If there are no other issues, Director Gong can be discharged. Rest at home for a couple of days.”

He looked at Wang Zhenzhen. ”Accountant Wang, you take a day off tomorrow to take care of Director Gong.”

Wang Zhenzhen hurriedly wiped her tears and said to Yu Haiting embarrassedly, ”Dean Yu, I just started working today, and taking a day off would leave a bad impression. I’ll keep working; let him rest at home alone.”

Yu Haiting laughed. ”Director Gong was injured for the sake of everyone’s health and well-being, so why would it look bad if you, as his family, took care of him? Please rest assured and take good care of Director Gong. This is the unanimous opinion of all the leaders in the Health Clinic.”

After saying this, Yu Haiting, not waiting for Wang Zhenzhen to say anything else, turned and left the hospital room.

Instructor Huang also said, ”Director Gong, it’s good that you’re awake. Don’t worry about matters at the police station; I’ll handle everything.”

After saying this, he left with Liu Gong and others, leaving only the couple in the hospital room.

Gong Daoyang reached out and held Wang Zhenzhen’s hand. ”Come on, stop crying. You’ve just finished your confinement period, and crying so much is bad for your eyes.”

Wang Zhenzhen held Gong Daoyang’s hand tightly in return. ”Do you know how frightened I was? Do you know how long you were unconscious? Four and a half hours! Who else faints for this long because of a gas leak? And that guy named Du Da, he didn’t even make it halfway, and you weren’t waking up. Do you know how worried I was?”

As Wang Zhenzhen spoke, uncontrollable tears flowed down her cheeks again. ”I blame my big mouth. If I hadn’t spoken this morning, you wouldn’t have been in trouble.”

Seeing Wang Zhenzhen blaming herself, Gong Daoyang hurriedly said, ”Nonsense. I was doing my job. It’s the nature of my job that anything can happen the next second. It has nothing to do with you at all.”

Gong Daoyang looked at his wife with heartache and quickly changed the subject. ”By the way, what time is it now?”

”It’s almost ten o’clock.” Wang Zhenzhen checked the time. ”Why?”

”It’s already so late. You should hurry back home; the children are waiting for you.” Seeing Wang Zhenzhen wanting to say something, Gong Daoyang quickly said, ”Don’t worry about me. Everyone in the Health Clinic knows me. If necessary, I can ask a colleague to come and keep me company. You’re still recovering, and the children haven’t seen you all day. If they don’t see you tonight, they’ll cry and fuss. Be a good girl and listen. Go home first. I’ll be back tomorrow morning.”

Wang Zhenzhen shook her head. ”I called Mom, and she said she could handle it.”

Gong Daoyang panicked for a moment and hurriedly asked, ”Did you tell her about my situation?”

”No, I’m not that stupid.” Wang Zhenzhen glared at Gong Daoyang. ”I told Mom that I had a lot of work piled up, so I had to work overtime, and with you accompanying me, she agreed.”

Gong Daoyang breathed a sigh of relief. ”That’s good, that’s good. Mom has heart disease; don’t scare her.”

Wang Zhenzhen glared at Gong Daoyang and said, ”You’re worried about scaring Mom, but not about scaring me?”

”Of course not. My wife is a superwoman, and small things like this can’t scare her. You’re my strongest support system.”

”You’re quite the talker.”

Wang Zhenzhen gently patted Gong Daoyang, and finally, a slight smile appeared on her face.

The next day, Yu Haiting came early to Gong Daoyang’s hospital room. After another round of examinations, he allowed Gong Daoyang to go home and rest.

Gong Daoyang himself didn’t feel anything wrong and wanted to return to the police station directly.

But as soon as he arrived at the police station, Instructor Huang forcefully pushed him out, insisting that he go home and rest for two days.

Wang Zhenzhen also disagreed with him going straight to work and forcibly pulled him into the car.

Gong Daoyang looked at Wang Zhenzhen driving, gazing at his wife’s slightly pale cheeks, and suddenly said, ”Zhenzhen, let’s both take a day off today. Our child is taken care of by your mom. Why don’t we go for a stroll and enjoy some time alone together?”
