This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

As Du Heng concluded his analysis of the cases, everyone except Wang Qingpeng stared at him in astonishment. These ten cases covered ailments of the liver, lungs, kidneys, digestive system, and body fluids. Yet, in Du Heng’s explanation, he analyzed everyone’s problems with remarkable ease, making them crystal clear. Even in fields unfamiliar to them, those present could understand and grasp the concepts thoroughly.

Zhang Dewen was the most deeply moved by this. He was a National Medical Master, true, but his knowledge was heavily specialized. It couldn’t compare to Du Heng’s comprehensive expertise, especially when Du Heng discussed diseases of the liver, lungs, and body fluids; Zhang Dewen couldn’t even get a word in. Such an explanation was even more astonishing than witnessing the treatment of individual patients.

Zhang Dewen sighed. No wonder Lan Changhua defended this young man so fiercely; he’s simply exceptionally gifted. His own knowledge, accumulated over more than sixty years, wasn’t as extensive as that of this thirty-year-old. If it were him, he wouldn’t just defend a young man like this as Lan Changhua had; he would absolutely treasure him and put him on a pedestal.

Seeing it was getting late and the lunch break had arrived, Zhang Dewen invited Du Heng to have a meal with members of the Chinese Medicine Department and a hospital leader. This gesture once again showed Du Heng immense respect.

Meanwhile, Director He of the Provincial Neurology Department was also very excited. Director Jia, who had hemiplegia and couldn’t move just a day and a night prior, had now walked into the examination room on his own. Just as Doctor Du had said, three doses of medicine had cured him. Now, they just had to wait for the check-up results. If the results were clear, Director Jia could be discharged.

Truthfully, Director He was reluctant to see Director Jia discharged. He hoped Director Jia would stay for a few more days of observation. However, Director Jia himself insisted on leaving, and since he was medically cleared, Director He couldn’t very well keep him against his will. Still, if he was discharged, so be it. He’d heard that the Chinese Medicine Department had already finalized Doctor Du Heng’s visiting scholar arrangement, so Director Jia’s presence or absence wasn’t a major concern anymore. As he was mulling this over with some anxiety, Director Jia’s check-up results appeared on the computer screen.

”Director He, your patient is fine. He’s very healthy.”

”Take another look, make sure you didn’t miss anything.”

”Oh, come on, Director He! I look at hundreds of scans a day. Whether there’s an issue or not, I can tell at a glance.” The Doctor of Inspection Department chuckled as he continued to adjust the machine, still chatting with Director He. ”Hey, Director He, isn’t this patient the director you sent over the day before yesterday? The one with the ischemic stroke? The name looks familiar.”

Director He, also scrutinizing the images on the computer screen, replied casually, ”That’s right. He’s the one.”

The Doctor of Inspection Department paused his adjustments, frowning. ”That can’t be right. I remember when you brought him in the day before yesterday, the man had hemiplegia, clearly showing signs of a stroke. How did he walk in here by himself today? Did I remember wrong?”

”Just focus on finishing the scan, don’t stop now,” Director He chuckled. ”You remembered correctly. It’s him.”

Prompted by Director He, the Doctor of Inspection Department quickly resumed his work. ”I didn’t remember wrong? Then what kind of miracle elixir did you use on a patient with stroke-induced hemiplegia to get him back to normal in just one day? Or perhaps... you misdiagnosed him in the first place, Director He?”

Watching the screen, the smile lines at the corners of Director He’s eyes deepened. ”No miracle elixir, and no misdiagnosis. It’s just that this patient was lucky, and so was I. We encountered an expert in treating strokes. He assessed the patient astutely, directly identified the root cause, and with three doses of medicine, had him standing again.”

The Doctor of Inspection Department finished adjusting the final image, then turned and rolled his eyes at Director He. ”Director He, you’re laying it on a bit thick, aren’t you? Afraid to admit you misdiagnosed him? Three doses of medicine to cure hemiplegia? The person you’re describing isn’t an expert; that’s a Divine Doctor, no?”

Director He stood up, looking thoroughly pleased, and chuckled. ”You don’t have to believe it, but he really did cure Director Jia with just three doses of medicine. And looking at the patients he’s treated, the completed cases... calling him a Divine Doctor wouldn’t be an exaggeration at all. Honestly, he’s worthy of the title. There are even people online who call him a Demigod.”

”Is there really someone that incredible?” The Doctor of Inspection Department stared at Director He in utter amazement. After all, this was Luqi! For a director at Luqi to call someone a Divine Doctor, and seemingly with genuine admiration, that person must be truly skilled.

”Of course, it’s true. And he’s right here in our hospital at this very moment.”

The Doctor of Inspection Department was even more astonished. ”A doctor from our hospital? Who? How come I haven’t heard of him? You don’t mean Sir Zhang, do you? But Sir Zhang has never been called a Divine Doctor.”

Director He glanced at Director Jia, who was just about to exit the examination room, and chuckled. ”So many questions! But I’ll tell you this: he’s not a doctor from our hospital, nor even from our province. However, you might know of him.”

”I would know him?”

”Correct. You know about Guan Bo from the Chinese Medicine Department and the competition he’s supposed to have, right?”

The Doctor of Inspection Department shook his head. ”I only know Guan Bo from the Chinese Medicine Department is Sir Zhang’s student. I’m not really clear about anything else. Director He, you know how it is. From the moment I start work, I’m doing check-ups non-stop. Sometimes I’m so busy I miss lunch, and I rarely get off work on time. We don’t really hear much of the hospital gossip down here.”

Seeing Director Jia emerge, Director He patted the Doctor of Inspection Department’s shoulder. ”Well, if you don’t know, you don’t know.”

The Doctor of Inspection Department, seeing Director He about to leave, quickly stood up. ”Director He, don’t go yet! Could you please introduce me to this Divine Doctor?”

”Why? Is there someone in your family who needs to see a doctor?”

”Yes, my father-in-law. He had a stroke, and his hand is now clawed up. I was wondering if this Divine Doctor you mentioned might be able to help.”

”Alright, I’ll ask for you. I need to go now.” Director He saw Director Jia waiting by the door, so he bid farewell to the Doctor of Inspection Department and went out.

”Director He, how am I looking?”

”Excellent. Not a single problem to be found.”

Leaving the Inspection Department, Director He and Director Jia walked back together. When Director Jia heard Director He’s answer, he was overjoyed. ”Director He, does that mean I can be discharged now?”

”According to your check-up results, yes, you can be discharged.” Director He hesitated for a moment before adding, ”However, I still think it would be best for you to stay for another two days of observation.”

Director Jia sighed suddenly. ”I’d like to stay for observation too, but my job just doesn’t allow for it.” He sighed again. ”The film crew has already started principal photography. Hundreds of people are waiting for me. Every day of delay costs tens of thousands of yuan, and we might run out of time as it is. I really can’t afford to delay any longer.”

There was one thing Director Jia didn’t mention: Producer Wang had secretly told him that the production company, having heard about his stroke, was already discussing replacing him as director.

Director He had said all he could. Seeing Director Jia’s determination, he decided not to press further. The decision to be hospitalized or discharged ultimately rests with the patient; doctors can only offer advice. Besides, his department was very busy. He’d only paid particular attention to Director Jia because his recovery had been so remarkably fast, not because Director Jia was inherently special.

However, just as Director Jia turned to leave, Director He added one more thing, ”Why don’t you get Doctor Du’s opinion as well? He’s the most familiar with your specific situation. His advice would certainly be the most pertinent.”

Director Jia paused, then nodded. ”Alright, I’ll ask for Doctor Du’s opinion.”

Seeing Director Jia’s immediate change in attitude, Director He felt a slight pang of... something akin to jealousy. But that’s the reality of the medical profession: high skill earns respect. If your skills are lacking, then regardless of your position, patients simply won’t give you the time of day.

After lunch, Du Heng and Kang Zhirong returned to the hotel to rest. Wu Shengnan and Li Qin had gone out, so no one was there to disturb Du Heng. He was planning to take a good nap. He had barely drifted off to sleep when the startlingly loud ring of his phone jolted him awake. Listening to Director Jia on the other end, Du Heng had no choice but to drag himself out of bed.

In Director Jia’s hospital room, Du Heng conducted a thorough check-up. The moment Du Heng finished the check-up, Director Jia eagerly asked, ”Doctor Du, can I be discharged now?”

”Discharge is possible, but you’ll still need to convalesce at home,” Du Heng said, withdrawing his hands and straightening up. ”If you intend to return to work, you should ideally wait another three to five days, until you’re properly recovered.”

Director Jia’s face immediately fell. ”The film crew has already been on hold for two days. The losses are too significant.”

”There’s no way around it. Three days is the absolute minimum I can recommend. If you go back to work now, getting anxious or overtired could easily trigger a relapse.” Du Heng spread his hands. ”And I must remind you of something, Director Jia.”

Director Jia looked up at Du Heng. ”Please, Doctor Du, go on. I’m listening.”

”Once you resume work: no staying up late, no losing your temper, and no alcohol.” Du Heng’s tone was unequivocal. ”Your liver and gallbladder have issues right now, and those three things are the most damaging to them. If you have another episode, it won’t just be another ischemic stroke. It could be instantly fatal, or result in permanent, untreatable paralysis. You need to consider this very carefully.”

Seeing Director Jia’s strong desire to be discharged, Du Heng had intentionally made his warning a bit frightening.

Director Jia nodded, his expression troubled. ”I’ll try my best to control those things. It would be a lie to say I can change completely overnight. But this work... I truly can’t delay it any longer.”

”Don’t you have an assistant director? Can’t you just delegate tasks to him?”

”Sigh, my assistant director is inexperienced. I wouldn’t feel at ease.”

Hearing this, Du Heng didn’t press the issue with Director Jia further. Instead, he turned to Director Jia’s wife to discuss follow-up care and precautions.

Afterward, he was once again invited to Director He’s office.
