The Valued Lady is Truly Dominant

Chapter 796: Chapter 796: Bitchy Bai Lianhua

Though the second wife’s success pleased some, not everyone was happy. In the Solitary Courtyard, Bai Shuilian listened to Shuanglu’s complaints, feeling more and more annoyance stirring in her heart.

”Also, I heard that the Fourth Miss also received a gift from Princess Anping—a string of Southern Pearls, something even the Third Miss didn’t get.” Shuanglu, a bit vexed, said, ”Madam, our Fifth Miss is the same age as the Fourth Miss, yet she wasn’t even allowed to go out. If she had gone out, she might have received a gift too. When all is said and done, it’s all about birth status...”

”Enough!”

Bai Shuilian interrupted her with a sullen face, coldly saying, ”You’ve been complaining for so long, when will you stop? Where do all these words come from?”

Shuanglu, frightened, was startled and knelt down, saying, ”Madam, please don’t be angry. This servant only feels it’s unfair for our Miss and means nothing else.”

”What good does being dissatisfied do? How can we change birth status?” Bai Shuilian said coldly, ”There’s no need to keep mentioning her birth status. She was born with this fate. What can dissatisfaction change?”

Shuanglu bowed her head repeatedly in apology.

When Song Zhiqing walked in, he saw this scene and paused, asking, ”What’s going on here?”

Shuanglu quickly paid her respects and timidly looked at Bai Shuilian.

Bai Shuilian turned her face away, reprimanding, ”Why haven’t you left yet?”

Shuanglu stood up and hurriedly withdrew.

Song Zhiqing had never seen Bai Shuilian lose her temper. Seeing this, he walked over and wrapped his arm around her shoulders, saying, ”If these servants don’t listen, just replace them. Why get angry with them and harm your health, isn’t it unworthy?”

Bai Shuilian said nothing but began to shed tears.

Song Zhiqing was shocked, turning her to face him, urgently asking, ”Why are you crying? What did that insolent servant say to upset you? I’ll have her dragged out and sold.”

Bai Shuilian shook her head, choked up, saying, ”It’s not her that upset me, it’s me who feels guilty towards Huan’er.”

Song Zhiqing was stunned and asked, ”What do you mean by this?”

”Sanlang, it’s my failure as a mother, not having a good birth status myself, and not giving her a good birth status, born inferior to others, even the servants look down on her, simply because she’s illegitimate.”

At Song Zhiqing’s mention, a surge of nameless anger rose from his feet to his heart.

The word ”illegitimate” stung his heart, further evoking the darkness and pain within him.

How did he differ from anyone? Wasn’t it just because of birth status? Now his daughter was walking the same path?

”Sanlang, Huan’er is barely a year old, she doesn’t understand anything, that’s fine for now, but when she gets older and understands people’s words, how will she accept it?” Bai Shuilian hugged him, sobbing, ”She’s innocent, she’s done nothing wrong, it’s only my incompetence as a mother, failing to give her a good birth status.”

Song Zhiqing’s heart ached deeply, patting her back, saying, ”What kind of foolish words are you saying? How is this your fault? This... stop crying, you’re breaking my heart.”

Bai Shuilian sniffed, finally calming down after a long time, looking at him with teary eyes, ”I’m sorry, it was my loss of composure.”

Song Zhiqing wiped away her tears from the corners of her eyes, saying, ”The servants are just ingratiating, lowly types, you don’t need to take their words to heart. If you truly can’t stand it, just dismiss them. Could they possibly be more esteemed than you, their master? Even if the elder sisters-in-law ask, there’s nothing to say, you are a legitimate Noble Concubine.”

Bai Shuilian gave a bitter smile, saying, ”What you’re saying isn’t wrong, but they’ve spoken some truth, Sanlang. Simply because Huan’er is illegitimate, in this household, let alone the servants, which of the masters truly values them? Even the grand old Madam hasn’t ever actively invited Huan’er for greetings.”

Song Zhiqing’s heart tensed.
