Apocalypse: Master of Soul Beasts

The chorus of seconding voices went on and on, and in the end the matter was settled just like that.

He really was no longer suited to serve as *** Commander-in-Chief—but how much Fang Yuqiong had sacrificed, and whether he was actually in the wrong, was something any clear‑eyed person could see.

Lin Haifeng decided to publicly lay out the whole chain of cause and effect not to throw his grandson under the bus; with the credit for this incident as a foundation, plus Fang Yuqiong’s own ”heartbroken, voluntarily resigning” posture, his road ahead might actually be much, much easier than before.

And Fran hadn’t said that Lin Haifeng had turned into a supercomputer; right now only Wei Tian, Wen Yu, Fran, and Fang Yuqiong knew about that, which spoke for itself about Fang Yuqiong’s standing.

Compared to Lin Que, Lin Haifeng seemed to value this grandson more. In fact, as Wen Yu saw it, judging comprehensively from all angles, Fang Yuqiong really was just a bit better than Lin Que.

”So, next is the matter of personnel changes.”

Fran said this.

”First, Fang Yuqiong is removed from the post of Commander-in-Chief of Yanjing, and reverts to being an ordinary citizen of the Yanjing Assembly Site, no longer enjoying any special privileges. I believe none of you have objections to that, do you?”

The hall fell silent; there were no objections.

Even Lin Que, who had been lying on the floor eating dirt, had probably come back to his senses by now. With Wen Yu deliberately easing his strength, Lin Que merely shot Fang Yuqiong a sideways glare, then returned to his seat.

This decision stripped Fang Yuqiong of his ”imperial kin” status and put him back among the ”commoners,” but as a citizen of the Yanjing Assembly Site he still retained rights like joining the army and sitting for civil‑service exams; his avenues for advancement were not cut off. Given how obvious his ability was to everyone, and with this group quietly and openly propping him up, they believed Fang Yuqiong would rise again soon enough.

”Second, Li Quan’an.”

Lin Haifeng pointed at the ”two‑surname house slave” standing beside him and announced the arrangement he had come to after discussion with Li Quan’an, Wen Yu, and Lin Haifeng.

”From today forward, Li Quan’an and the Cannibals under his command will be incorporated into the Commander’s Praetorian Guards of Yanjing, with Li Quan’an serving as Praetorian Guards Captain.”

The moment he said this, the hall instantly erupted.

That position carried a lot of power.

Sometimes the Commander-in-Chief was too busy with state affairs to appear in person, and the orders he issued would be transmitted by the Praetorian Guards Captain. If the Commander-in-Chief of Yanjing was likened to an Emperor, then Li Quan’an would be a personal attendant...

In outsiders’ eyes, a personal attendant beside the Emperor was basically the chief of espionage eunuchs, a Nine Thousand Years type—of course, if the Emperor was muddle‑headed and incompetent while the ministers did nothing, that sort of ”Nine Thousand Years” really could blot out the sky with one hand. But at present Yanjing was packed with powerful experts and elites, so Li Quan’an’s post wasn’t quite as dazzling as one might imagine.

At the end of the day, he was still just a ”eunuch,” an aberration.

And thinking a bit deeper, if Wen Yu became Commander-in-Chief of Yanjing... then this job would really not be so wonderful.

As the saying goes, serving a ruler is like serving a tiger; how could Wen Yu be something a mere tiger could be compared to?

But the bystanders didn’t know about the backroom quid‑pro‑quo between the parties involved. Some of them turned their eyes to Lin Que, seemingly wanting to hear his opinion.

With Fang Yuqiong stepping down, in their eyes the new Commander-in-Chief of Yanjing could only be Lin Que, without a doubt.

Until Fang Bai put the real issue on the table.

”I object. Li Quan’an is a Cannibal; having him follow at the Commander-in-Chief’s side is an unwise decision to begin with. And then there’s the matter of electing a new Commander-in-Chief...”

”I nominate Lin Que.”

The one who spoke was Kasu.

And thus the problem returned to the most critical point.

Most people didn’t actually care about dealing with the rebels or any personnel reshuffling. What they cared about most was still the question of who would be Commander-in-Chief of the Yanjing Assembly Site after Fang Yuqiong stepped down!

If this matter proceeded ”normally,” it would inevitably end up like the chilling scene back when Lin Haifeng died, that farce of a voting election.

But this time, Fran had no intention whatsoever of staging that kind of messy comedy.

”As for that question, Commander Lin actually made his decision while he was still alive.”

The instant Fran spoke, most people directed their gaze at Lin Que. Under thousands of eyes, Lin Que’s expression didn’t change, but his slowly clenched fists were enough to prove that the kid did have some ambition toward that seat.

However, Fran merely shot Lin Que a blank look, then turned his eyes toward Wen Yu.

...

Fran’s gaze was perfectly clear; the meaning within it could not have been more obvious.

Lin Tianxue was the first to notice his eyes. She looked at Wen Yu, and saw him still sitting in the chief seat with that same mild demeanor, a slight smile on his face as he watched the reaction below. She gently nudged her husband.

Fang Bai also picked up on it.

He fell silent, and grew more reserved—slowly, there was even a faint trace of excitement in him.

Fang Bai was no fool; the message Fran was signaling could not have been clearer to him, and he even weighed the pros and cons in a short span of time.

The result... was that everyone would win!

Compared to Lin Que, and even himself, Wen Yu’s advantages were simply too overwhelming; or rather, in every regard Wen Yu outstripped both him and Lin Que by several blocks!

The world’s number one powerful expert combining with the world’s second‑strongest force, joining hands with the number one force—under such a union of giants, everyone would be a beneficiary!

The looks being exchanged were like a virus, triggering a terrifying chain reaction.

From Lin Tianxue to Fang Bai, from Fang Bai to Qin Tian, then to Kasu—bit by bit, the entire venue grew quiet.

Lin Que lifted his head in confusion, only to see everyone’s eyes radiating excitement wrapped in complex emotions.

So he fell silent, and he let go...

He understood his own role, and he understood that there was no way he could compete, in this matter, with the man currently sitting in the chief seat.

So he wisely chose to watch how things played out.

Until Wen Yu spoke.

”That’s right, it’s me. From today on, I’ll be your leader.”

As soon as those words fell, the hall went silent.

...

”What’s this? Show a little reaction. If you all act like that, it makes things really awkward for me.”

Wen Yu said with a smile—and what followed was a thunderous roar of cheers from the whole hall!

They were very gracious; whether it was awe of Wen Yu’s strength or genuine feeling, who knew. But once Wen Yu made his decision, this matter was never going to be swayed by anyone’s will to begin with!

Lin Haifeng agreed, Wen Yu agreed—so there was nothing left for anyone else to say...

All they could do was submit, and accept Wen Yu’s leadership.
