Apocalypse: Master of Soul Beasts

Chapter 316: Chapter 105 Breakthrough_1

Bipedal Lizards, one after another, rushed towards the outposts. They scrambled up the city walls or vaulted into the air with forceful leaps, then engaged in close combat with the Heavy Shield Guards defending the walls!

In an instant, blood sprayed and splashed.

Ultimately, Third-level and Level 4 professionists still seemed somewhat weak when facing Level 5 Bipedal Lizards.

Not to mention, the number of Bipedal Lizards was dozens to hundreds of times that of these professionists.

However, these highly trained Heavy Shield Guards, empowered by their Shield Wall and Immoveability abilities, seemed rooted to the top of the wall. Like a dam, they firmly intercepted the terrifying assault at the wall line.

At the same time, the Magic Energy Mage Special Ops Team continuously unleashed super fireballs, blasting swarms of Bipedal Lizards to smithereens!

”Hold on!”

Cao Ling, Heavy Shield in hand, forcefully pushed the Bipedal Lizard before him off the city wall. Wielding his fragment axe swiftly, he sliced the slimy tongue coiled around him in two, then turned and yelled towards Fang Wenhai.

”We can’t hold them off! The difference in physical strength is too great! Old Fang, decide quickly—do we fight or flee?”

Hearing Cao Ling’s words, Fang Wenhai quickly surveyed the battlefield.

Although the Heavy Shield Guard Special Ops Unit was holding the horde of Bipedal Lizards at bay outside the city wall, these lizards had a Chief Commanding Officer.

This meant these Bipedal Lizards wouldn’t just target one section of the wall and foolishly keep charging the Heavy Shield Guards’ defensive line.

Currently, a large number of Bipedal Lizards had already circled from the front to the sides and were climbing other sections of the city wall.

It was predictable that the professionists on other sections of the wall definitely lacked the Heavy Shield Guards’ ability to intercept these Level 5 Demon Tribe creatures outside the city walls.

At this thought, Fang Wenhai decisively issued an order.

”Heavy Shield Guards, cover the rear! Magic Energy Mages, retreat first! Pull out of the treasure land immediately!”

The Magic Energy Mage Special Ops Team was undoubtedly far more valuable than the Heavy Shield Guards. Since the decision to retreat had been made, priorities had to be set.

Clearly, the mages were worth far more than these brutes...

Upon receiving Fang Wenhai’s order, Shen Yi waved his hand. The Magic Energy Mages behind the Heavy Shield Guards immediately jumped off the city wall and sprinted at full speed towards the entrance of the treasure land.

Shen Yi, however, did not retreat first. Instead, he conjured a massive fireball, blasting away the Bipedal Lizard in front of Cao Ling, then turned to Fang Wenhai and asked,

”What’s the plan now?”

”Get off the wall! We can’t hold them head-on anymore. Retreat quickly and engage them in urban warfare.”

This decision was quite wise. In less than five minutes of engagement with the Bipedal Lizards, the Heavy Shield Guard Special Ops Unit had already suffered one-fifth casualties. It was predictable that in another five minutes at most, all the Heavy Shield Guards on the wall would be wiped out!

Hearing Fang Wenhai’s order, Cao Ling quickly nodded and then shouted.

”Squads One and Two, change formation and establish a defensive line! The rest, get off the wall and prepare for urban warfare!”

Following Cao Ling’s loud command, the Heavy Shield Guards on the city wall rapidly changed formation.

Nearly a hundred warriors instantly took the front line, activating all their skills. They stubbornly intercepted the Bipedal Lizards trying to climb the wall. The remaining Heavy Shield Guards quickly deactivated their skills, turned, jumped off the city walls, and ran towards the outpost’s complex alleyways.

”Go.”

In the short time it took to cover the retreat, nearly half the Heavy Shield Guards in Squads One and Two at the front had already fallen. This proved Fang Wenhai’s decision had been somewhat flawed.

He had underestimated the Bipedal Lizards’ strength and overestimated the damage Third-level and Level 4 professionists could inflict on them.

Considering the current defensive situation, perhaps choosing to engage in urban warfare from the start would have been a much better strategy!

However, the current situation clearly didn’t allow Fang Wenhai any room for regret. Just before the battle began, Lin Haifeng had issued orders requiring Fang Wenhai to hold off the Bipedal Lizards’ offensive with his existing manpower. So, Fang Wenhai could only dig in and resist stubbornly!

Fang Wenhai and Cao Ling were the last to jump off the city wall. As they watched the last rearguard Heavy Shield Guard atop the wall get crushed by a gigantic Bipedal Lizard, the unease in Fang Wenhai’s heart intensified.

”How much longer until the foreign reinforcements arrive!”

A voice came through the communication device.

”It will still be dozens of minutes.”

”Hurry! Tell Commander Lin to hurry! We need reinforcements! We need powerful experts! The outpost is about to fall!”

After quickly relaying the current situation at the outpost, Fang Wenhai, along with Cao Ling and Shen Yi, headed towards the central castle.

...

The rule of the outpost was that the first side to destroy the Central Castle would win.

Under such battlefield rules, the city walls held little actual significance.

The height of the walls was insufficient for their intended purpose; to the massive Bipedal Lizards, they were little more than small earthen mounds.

Under Fang Wenhai’s command, the professionists on all four walls had abandoned the largely useless fortifications, opting instead to engage the Bipedal Lizards in a game of cat and mouse within the city’s complex interior.

The urban environment was not particularly favorable for the Bipedal Lizards.

The city, largely constructed from high-strength metals, was difficult for the Bipedal Lizards to destroy. Their large size also made maneuvering within it a challenge. In contrast, the military’s professionists could easily scale walls and enter buildings to attack the Bipedal Lizards from multiple directions.

Fang Wenhai, who had arrived first at the Central Castle, looked down through a window at the city below. Bipedal Lizards were swiftly climbing over the walls one after another. In the distance, near the entrance to the treasure land, the Magic Energy Mage Special Ops Team had already departed.

Using the Central Castle as their base, countless professionists continuously hunted Bipedal Lizards throughout the city’s alleyways.

Although the Bipedal Lizards possessed the physical attributes of Level 5 creatures, their actual combat strength didn’t reach that level because their only skill was Fission Reproduction. Furthermore, the urban terrain was unfavorable for them. Consequently, the battle had momentarily tilted slightly in the military’s favor.

Only slightly...

As more and more Bipedal Lizards clambered over the walls into the outpost, and those already inside continued to multiply through Fission Reproduction, it was foreseeable that their numbers would escalate over time until they completely overran the entire outpost!
