Apocalypse: Master of Soul Beasts

Chapter 315: Chapter 104 Flesh and Blood City Wall_1

The Magic Energy Mage Special Ops Team possessed terrifying deterrent power, yet the overwhelming onslaught of Level 5 Bipedal Lizards could not be intercepted by a mere thousand-man mage team.

After all, a single super fireball, despite its rapid firing speed, was utterly incapable of defending the entire frontline of a small city, even if it only needed to cover one section of the wall.

Therefore, it was inevitable that the Bipedal Lizard army would break through the blockade of heavy fire and super fireballs.

Witnessing this, Fang Wenhai decisively issued a command.

”The Magic Energy Mage Special Ops Team will continue their attack, directing fireballs towards clusters of Bipedal Lizards! Heavy Shield Guard Special Ops Unit, prepare the first line of defense! The Shadow Assassin squadron, remain on standby! All other personnel, withdraw to other city walls or outposts to set up defenses... Prepare for street fighting at any moment!”

Hearing Fang Wenhai’s orders, the professionists led by the military’s super warriors retreated, leaving only the Magic Energy Mage Special Ops Team, the Heavy Shield Guard Special Ops Unit, and Commander Fang Wenhai on the city wall.

Beside Fang Wenhai, Cao Ling watched the Bipedal Lizards draw nearer and declared loudly,

”Brothers, get ready! Show them what we’re made of!”

The moment he finished speaking, Cao Ling raised his shield, drew a relatively small axe, and swiftly moved to the edge of the city wall.

”Raise shields!”

Instantly, an earthen-yellow glow lit up.

...

Shield Wall (C-Class, Active Ability): Upon activation, it strengthens the shield’s defensive power and enhances the host’s resistance to knockdown and overall stability. This skill can connect with other Shield Walls!

This was undoubtedly another legion warfare skill.

However, the Heavy Shield Guard profession differed from that of the Magic Energy Mages. Heavy Shield Guards were not difficult to train, as their legion warfare skills also significantly aided their individual combat prowess.

The Level 5 Bipedal Lizards charged forward rapidly. Their massive bodies, even when prone, were already half as high as the city wall.

Seeing the terrifying figures of the Bipedal Lizards drawing ever closer, Cao Ling shouted,

”Second Skill, activate!”

Following Cao Ling’s command, thousands of Heavy Shield Guards immediately bent their knees slightly, one hand holding a heavy shield, the other gripping a short battle axe, activating their skills in unison!

Immoveability (C-Class, Active Ability): Upon activation, this skill continuously consumes stamina while making the host seem rooted to the earth, rendering their body extremely difficult to move by external forces.

The military had, of course, tested the ”difficulty” mentioned in the skill description.

When Level 3 Heavy Shield Guards activated Immoveability, even Level 5 attacks struggled to budge them.

By the time Immoveability was activated, the Bipedal Lizard horde was already upon them!

...

Level 5 Bipedal Lizards were 50 meters long and nearly 20 meters tall! Moreover, their powerful, thick legs made them exceptional leapers.

The city wall was only 30 meters high.

This meant that a Level 5 Bipedal Lizard could leap onto the city wall in a single bound!

The first Bipedal Lizard to charge forward bent its powerful legs, and then its massive body shot towards the city wall like a cannonball, its long, thick tongue simultaneously lashing out towards a Heavy Shield Guard on the ground!

What met it was a menacing battle axe from above!

The Heavy Shield Guard first ensnared by the Bipedal Lizard’s long tongue felt the colossal force transmitted through it. But under the effects of Shield Wall and Immoveability, he merely staggered a couple of steps before regaining his balance!

Then, he raised the short-handled battle axe in his right hand and slashed at the foul, slippery tongue wrapped around him.

The axe shimmered with light.

Ripping Strike (D-Class, Active Ability): Upon activation, it adds a tearing effect to the attack and enhances its attack power.

This was a very common skill. This third skill was not an innate part of the profession but one acquired later or comprehended upon promotion. This meant that each Heavy Shield Guard’s third skill was different.

The battle axe struck the Level 5 Bipedal Lizard’s tongue, inflicting some damage.

However, the damage was minor, insufficient to sever the tongue of a Level 5 creature.

On the contrary, Shield Wall and Immoveability proved immensely effective!

The Bipedal Lizard tried to pull the ensnared Heavy Shield Guard into its mouth to crush and devour him. However, when it suddenly exerted force, it not only failed to drag the guard but was instead thrown off balance by the recoil. Its leaping body was violently pulled down, crashing heavily onto the city wall.

What awaited this Bipedal Lizard was a relentless barrage from dozens of axes!

Normally, Peak Level 3 or Early Stage Level 4 professionists would be unlikely to significantly damage Level 5 creatures. However, the greatest advantage of professionists—or rather, of humans—came from their use of tools!

The standard-issue shields and battle axes of the Heavy Shield Guards had been modified by researchers from the Institute of Science. The materials used were developed from extractions taken from higher-level gear. As a result, Heavy Shield Guards wielding these sharp axes could now inflict wounds on the Bipedal Lizards!

And the wounds were not small!

Axes, shimmering with various lights, rained down on the Bipedal Lizard’s body. Each glimmer signified an attack-type skill.

In an instant, flesh and blood splattered!

The professionists’ attack speed was not slow. Under the enhancement of Shield Wall and Immoveability, the damage the Bipedal Lizard could inflict was limited. In mere seconds, this Bipedal Lizard met a frustrating end at the hands of a group of ”lower-level” professionists.

Then, the Shield Wall quickly reformed, restoring the solid barrier of shields and bodies that resembled a wall of flesh and blood...

The next Bipedal Lizard lunged forward!

...

BOOM!

The massive body of a Bipedal Lizard collided with a large shield, over a meter tall and held high, producing a deafening crash.

In the eyes of a Level 5 Bipedal Lizard, a shield barely over a meter tall was like a mere pebble. However, augmented by skills, the shield managed to halt the creature’s charging momentum!

The Heavy Shield Guard who took the direct hit didn’t retreat a single step, absorbing the brutal impact. Although he strained to channel most of the force into the city wall beneath him, the power difference between a Level 5 and a Level 3 creature was simply too vast.

The impacted Heavy Shield Guard coughed up a large mouthful of fresh blood. Before he could retrieve the healing potion hanging at his side, he collapsed weakly to the ground. Clashing head-on with a Middle Stage Level 5 Bipedal Lizard at Peak Level 3 was not without its price, and this was not an isolated incident.
