Apocalypse: Master of Soul Beasts

Chapter 254: Chapter 47 Inside Line_1

Hearing Xiao Xue’s greeting, Fang Yuan merely shrugged, offering no reply.

However, the professionist beside him respectfully saluted Kuangliu, who stood at the restaurant’s entrance.

”Greetings, Lord God of War.”

Only when the man spoke did Kuangliu turn his head to look at him.

”You are?”

”This is a professionist from the Demon Capital Assembly Site. We were sent by General Peng to attend my grandfather’s birthday celebration.”

Fang Yuan deliberately emphasized the words ”my grandfather.”

Kuangliu gave a slight nod after listening, then ignored the two before him and walked straight outside.

Fang Yuan didn’t press the issue, merely glancing at Wen Yu, who was behind Kuangliu, a thoughtful expression in his eyes.

***

”The conflict runs deep,” Wen Yu, seated in the passenger seat, remarked to Kuangliu.

For a Peak Level 1 professionist to dare provoke a Level 4 professionist—it was simply unfathomable to Wen Yu!

Kuangliu merely nodded, offering no further details.

Evidently, there were some things Wen Yu wasn’t meant to know.

Instead, Xiao Xue explained, ”Fang Yuan’s grandfather was one of the founding pioneers...”

Wen Yu nodded, indicating his understanding.

”This is why I’m reluctant to join the military,” Wen Yu said. ”You have far too many considerations—exchanging favors, navigating all sorts of unspoken rules. I don’t get it. Wouldn’t it be better to keep things simple?”

Hearing Wen Yu, Kuangliu nodded and then flashed him a somewhat fierce smile.

”Things will be changing soon...”

Wen Yu glanced at Kuangliu’s hands, clenched tightly on the steering wheel, veins bulging. Clearly, Kuangliu harbored a deep resentment toward those Aristocratic Families!

And the implication of his recent words...

Wen Yu remained silent for a moment before asking directly, ”Is it related to the task I owe the military?”

Wen Yu remembered he owed the military a task; the military undoubtedly remembered it even more keenly.

Kuangliu didn’t elaborate, just smiled at Wen Yu. ”You’ll find out when you meet Commander Lin tomorrow.”

***

The environment in the inner city zone was indeed far superior to that of the outer city zone. Countless housing structures of various types lined the streets; some belonged to powerful combat groups, others to the military.

However, a mere two months hadn’t been enough for the Yanjing Assembly Site to restore its original economic order. The collapse of pre-apocalypse currency and the emergence of new forms of barter had led to a scarcity of resources among survivors, leaving the streets looking deserted.

Furthermore, most people seen were professionists clad in various types of protective gear.

”This is the residential area in the inner city zone, exclusively for high-ranking military personnel.”

Kuangliu’s vehicle slowed to a stop before a row of detached villas. He got out and pointed to the first house on the right.

”This one is yours. Permanently. Mine is just across from you.”

Wen Yu nodded.

Never mind anything else; the mere fact that the military had given him a villa identical to Kuangliu’s, in the land-scarce inner city zone, was proof enough of their sincerity.

Kuangliu took a key from his pocket, handed it to Wen Yu, and said, ”Get a good night’s sleep. I’ll come for you tomorrow morning.”

Wen Yu nodded. Ignoring Kuangliu, who was getting back into the car, he walked straight into the villa.

***

The villa was spacious and clean, equipped with various household appliances. Given its location, Wen Yu found it impossible to believe there would be any shortage of utilities like water or electricity.

Wen Yu chose a bedroom for himself on the third floor. A room opposite his was occupied by Cyclops.

That was Cyclops’s den.

Cyclops had also claimed a room for Star right next to its own, even drilling a large dog-sized hole through the wall connecting the two rooms!

Listening to the constant CLANGING AND BANGING from Cyclops’s room, Wen Yu shook his head helplessly.

Activating his 4th Soul Realm, Wen Yu summoned Faceless.

He gently tried to communicate with Faceless’s consciousness. Unfortunately, it was a mass of chaos, incapable of conveying any useful information.

This left Wen Yu feeling quite helpless.

It was foreseeable that if an enemy broke Faceless’s replication state, its fragile true body wouldn’t be able to withstand a Level 4 attack.

This also effectively limited Faceless’s combat range—it had to stay close to Wen Yu.

After briefly simulating future combat scenarios for Faceless, Wen Yu placed the soul pet on his bedside table and closed his eyes.

Unless absolutely necessary, Wen Yu wasn’t accustomed to keeping his soul pets confined within the Soul Realm.

According to Cyclops, the Soul Realm might seem fine, but in reality, it was just a prison.

***

Back in the restaurant where Wen Yu and Kuangliu had been dining, Fang Yuan and the others from the Demon Capital Assembly Site had finished their meal. Only Fang Yuan remained, sitting alone in the empty hall.

Fang Yuan pondered for a moment, then took the communicator from his pocket and dialed a number.

BEEP... BEEP... BEEP...

After the busy signal repeated several times, a voice finally came from the communicator.

”Help me investigate the identity of the professionist who was with Kuangliu today.”

The person on the other end gave a simple acknowledgment. In less than five minutes, information regarding Wen Yu’s identity and level reached Fang Yuan’s ears via the communicator.

Sequence Number 2, huh?

Fang Yuan pondered for a moment, then immediately stood up and hurried toward the central zone.

Clearly, the appearance of a Sequence Number 2 was significant enough to completely transform the current situation in the Yanjing Assembly Site!

Despite his lack of strength and courage—evident from his hesitation to challenge the advancement trial—Fang Yuan was no fool. As a scion groomed by an Aristocratic Family, he was not to be underestimated!

***

Just as Fang Yuan was rushing back to the central zone, the professionist who had dined with him earlier returned to the outer city zone.

Gazing at the twisted alleys before him and the refugees scattered about with vacant eyes, a flicker of disdain crossed the professionist’s face.

Then, after making several turns through the complex alleyways and ensuring no one was following, he entered a dilapidated small building.

The small building was ordinary enough, but in the outer city zone, any such structure typically housed a powerful professionist.

Before Peng Jun’s subordinate could enter, two professionists guarding the entrance stopped him.

”Halt! This is the Luminosity Battle Squad’s territory.”

Peng Jun’s subordinate glanced at the two professionists’ arrogant expressions and couldn’t help but frown, more so at their tacky squad name.

”Take me to your leader!”

After speaking, Peng Jun’s subordinate retrieved a Token from his coat.

Upon seeing the Token, the two guards exchanged a look, then used a walkie-talkie to contact someone inside. ”Check if anyone followed him.”

After a short wait, a response came through the walkie-talkie: ”All clear!”

The two professionists finally relaxed and greeted Peng Jun’s subordinate with a peculiar salute. ”Greetings, sir.”

Peng Jun’s subordinate, pleased with their caution, nodded and entered the building.

***

The building was dilapidated. However, in these apocalyptic times, any shelter was a decent option, and this building was crammed with survivors.

Nearly every room in the entire building was packed with survivors, most of them refugees with sallow complexions, clearly underfed.

Although their faces were gaunt, their spirits were surprisingly high.

Seeing this, Peng Jun’s subordinate nodded, evidently pleased with the ”work” being done here. He then followed the guiding professionist to the top floor.

Even before they reached the top-floor office, sounds of revelry reached their ears.

Hearing this, Peng Jun’s subordinate frowned deeply, kicked open the office door, and strode in.

Inside, a portly, large-headed man was engaged in carnal acts with two young women. The sudden BANG from the door made him jump!

The portly man was about to erupt in anger but immediately recognized Peng Jun’s subordinate. He frantically pulled up his pants and greeted the visitor with obsequious bows.

Peng Jun’s subordinate waved his hand dismissively. He first surveyed the office’s decor, then glanced at the two naked women standing aside. After a long pause, he shook his head.

”All of you, get out.”

At his command, the women and the guiding professionist quickly exited, closing the door behind them.

”You’re living quite comfortably here, Fatty,” Peng Jun’s subordinate remarked, his tone laced with sarcasm.

Hearing the teasing tone, Fatty immediately bowed and scraped, saying, ”Everything for the church!”

Peng Jun’s subordinate nodded and then produced an object. It was a small, radio-like box.

Then, he finally spoke. ”Take this. It’s a new device developed by the research department that can accelerate the brainwashing process. Also, I have the Sect Hierarch’s latest orders!

”You are to accelerate the recruitment of followers, but do so with extreme caution. The military is watching us now. You’re operating right under their noses, so you must be doubly careful! If you jeopardize the grand plan of our Demon Worship Sect, not even ten of your lives will be enough to pay for it!”

Hearing these stern words, a mix of threat and promise, Fatty nodded readily.

”Also, if anything comes up, you can contact this person.” Peng Jun’s subordinate paused in thought for a moment, then produced a slip of paper. A name and contact information were written on it.

Fatty’s expression changed drastically when he saw the name on the paper.

This person... How could it possibly be him...?

”Nothing is impossible when the benefits are sufficient enough!” Peng Jun’s subordinate stated.

”Alright, I’ve told you everything you need to know. Do your job well. When the Demon Realm descends, if this is successful, you’ll be among the first to be transformed and become a member of the great Demon Tribe!”
