Apocalypse: Master of Soul Beasts

Chapter 244: Chapter 39: Two Choices_1

Wen Yu and Xiao Xue were swiftly flying on Star toward Yanjing City!

Star didn’t particularly mind her boss riding her. However, if Wen Yu weren’t pressed for time, he wouldn’t have ridden Star.

The energy consumption for Star for one flight far surpassed that of Cyclops. Therefore, at the end of this high-speed journey, Star would require a significant meal to compensate!

”By the way,” Wen Yu turned his head to look at Xiao Xue, who was seeing stars from the flight, and asked directly, ”can the airfare be reimbursed?”

”What? Airfare?” Xiao Xue asked in confusion.

Wen Yu shrugged. ”You’ll understand when we get there.”

At the same time, Wen Yu mentally communicated with his two soul pets, ”Brothers, it’s time to feast! Once we land, pick what you want to eat. This is Star’s labor fee!”

Hearing these words, Star instantly increased her speed, causing Xiao Xue to scream!

...

While Wen Yu rode Star leaving Mudanjiang City, many people noticed Star’s formidable appearance.

Those unaware of the situation assumed an unknown mutant beast was passing through. But those in the know naturally understood that this was Wen Yu departing the city.

Ye Nan sat at home. It was over thirty minutes after Wen Yu had left before he finally composed himself.

He glanced at his sleeping child and then at his wife who had stayed by his side. Ye Nan sighed deeply.

”Alright, you go to the room and stay with the child. I need to be alone for a while.”

Ye Nan’s wife looked at her husband’s increasingly aged face and nodded slightly.

She then gripped her husband’s hand tightly.

As his wife, she knew how much Ye Nan had endured for their family.

Watching his wife enter the bedroom, Ye Nan sighed deeply and stood up. He looked around their small apartment.

The apartment was small, but his wife had made it cozy and homey.

This was the only place where Ye Nan could find rare tranquility, allowing him to forget the deceptions and betrayals, the law of the jungle, and the darkness within humanity...

KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK...

The rhythmic knocking on the door interrupted Ye Nan’s thoughts. He hesitated for a moment, then slowly approached the door.

KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK.

The knocking was steady, firm, and polite—not at all like the forceful door-pounding attitude of those professionists who collected protection fees.

Ye Nan placed his eye to the peephole and looked outside.

Then, a somewhat pale young face appeared before Ye Nan.

”Well? Aren’t you going to invite me in?”

A voice carrying a hint of a smile rang out as Wanping, standing outside, finally spoke.

...

Wanping slowly surveyed everything in the room. He spent nearly five minutes walking around the small living room before finally sitting down at the dining table and intently eyeing the dishes on it.

Nearby, Ye Nan stood trembling.

After a while, Wanping took something resembling a jade pendant from his space ring. He fiddled with it in his hand, then slowly began to speak.

”Do you know what this is?”

Seeing Ye Nan shake his head without even looking at the object in his hand, Wanping sighed.

”This thing is called a teleportation jade charm. It’s a rare item! It’s a relic left to me by the former leader of the Mighty Tiger Battalion. Its purpose is to quickly teleport to a preset location. For me, it’s a safety precaution. Do you know why?”

Ye Nan shook his head again. Cold sweat began to trickle down his forehead.

This was a natural human response when facing an irresistible force.

To Ye Nan, Wanping’s power was undoubtedly an irresistible force!

Wanping toyed with the jade charm for about three minutes before he spoke again.

”The human heart... it’s a difficult thing to grasp. People always inexplicably develop trivial emotions like friendship, familial affection, and romantic love. These things can cloud a person’s judgment, leading them to do things they shouldn’t.”

”For example,” Wanping smiled faintly at Ye Nan and continued, ”you live across from Wen Yu, so you’ve definitely received some benefits from him—like those supplies currently in the hallway. With that, I can’t guarantee you wouldn’t be tempted to, say, collude with Wen Yu to set a trap for me. I can scheme against Wen Yu, and naturally, Wen Yu can scheme against me. That’s quite normal, isn’t it?”

”So,” Wanping gestured with the jade charm in his hand, ”this is my life-saving measure. Don’t blame me for being too cautious; after all, I value my own life a great deal.”

Ye Nan remained standing nearby, not uttering a sound.

”Hey, hey, hey, show some reaction! Come on, give me a smile!”

Perhaps feeling his monologue was too dull, Wanping walked directly up to Ye Nan and tugged at the corners of his mouth. Seeing Ye Nan force a hideous smile, Wanping nodded in satisfaction.

”By the way, you still haven’t answered my question. Did you, or did you not, conspire with Wen Yu to set me up?”

Ye Nan’s lips trembled as he spoke.

”No... No, sir...”

Hearing Ye Nan’s reply, Wanping nodded.

”I figured as much. Because if you had, I would have crushed this teleportation jade charm long ago!”

”So, you’ve done well!”

Hearing Wanping’s words, Ye Nan nodded vigorously.
