Apocalypse: Master of Soul Beasts

Chapter 237: Chapter 34: Sect Hierarch_1

Wen Yu, naturally, had no idea what was happening to Wanping and Guan Tao. At this moment, he was leading Star and Cyclops down the mountain.

It didn’t take long for Wen Yu to leave this ravaged battlefield.

At the foot of the mountain, where they had arrived earlier, Xiao Xue was waiting for Wen Yu.

Upon seeing Wen Yu approaching, Xiao Xue looked him over and, not noticing any obvious injuries, finally spoke.

”Did you handle it?”

Wen Yu nodded.

”So, are they all dead?”

”The one who was leading them escaped; the rest are all dead.”

Xiao Xue was silent for a while, then nodded at Wen Yu.

”Thank you for avenging them.”

Wen Yu looked at Xiao Xue’s somewhat sorrowful expression and said nothing, silently leading the way into the city.

”By the way,” Wen Yu, who was leading the way, abruptly turned around and said to Xiao Xue, ”the organization that killed them is called the Demon Worship Sect, and they may have significant power. At the very least, their research capabilities are very strong! I think your military needs to pay attention to this organization!”

Wen Yu’s intention was to leverage the military’s power to thoroughly investigate the Demon Worship Sect. After all, when it came to intelligence gathering, Wen Yu couldn’t hold a candle to the military.

Xiao Xue naturally understood Wen Yu’s meaning and nodded solemnly.

「Elsewhere in Cathay」

In a somewhat dim room, an elderly man in casual clothes sat before a grand desk, carefully manipulating two round walnuts in his hands. He handled them with the meticulous care and focus one might reserve for a lover. As the walnuts spun faster and faster in his hand, the elder’s expression grew more solemn.

CRACK!

Perhaps the elder had exerted too much force, causing the collectible walnut in his hand to make a crisp sound as two clear cracks instantly appeared on it.

The elder sighed and shook his head, placing the cracked walnut on the desk. He spoke in a somewhat deep voice, ”This was my last pair of walnuts, wasn’t it?”

A voice suddenly emerged from the shadows beside him. ”Yes, sir.”

The elder nodded, propping his head with his right hand while his left picked up the cracked walnut from the desk. As he applied force with his hand, he said, ”I really like playing with walnuts. Do you know why?”

Before the person hidden in the shadows could say anything, the elder continued in a slow yet powerful tone,

”I love the feeling of a walnut gradually changing in my hand, slowly becoming smooth. You’re young; you might not understand this pastime of ’playing with walnuts.’

”There’s a world of difference between well-conditioned walnuts and untouched ones!

”Whenever I spend a few years conditioning a presentable pair of walnuts, I treasure them, because they are the fruits of my labor!

”They represent my efforts and are my rewards!

”Such a pity it broke! Truly a pity!”

After speaking, the elder slowly opened his tightly clenched left fist.

Inside his palm, the previously cracked walnut had been reduced to a handful of splinters!

”Walnuts are truly wonderful! Because they never fail to reward your efforts!

”But humans are different! Especially humans after the cataclysm began, and even more so the Cannibals I’ve personally groomed!

”Perhaps their power came to them too quickly! Too effortlessly! They simply don’t understand how to cherish this power!

”Just like this time!”

The elder’s voice grew louder and louder until, by the end, he could no longer control his emotions and erupted into a roar!

His furious voice reverberated throughout the room, even producing faint, almost imperceptible echoes. This alone hinted at the sheer size of the room, the full extent of which was not yet visible.

The elder slowly calmed his agitated emotions. After a moment of deep contemplation, he finally spoke. ”The one who stole the sacred beast, have you found out who it is?”

The voice concealed in the shadows immediately responded, ”According to internal military sources, it’s likely Sequence Number 2.”

Just as Wen Yu was forming a pact with Faceless, the Demon Worship Sect’s method of controlling Faceless instantly failed. The news immediately reached the Sect Hierarch of the Demon Worship Sect—this very elder.

Upon hearing the words ”Sequence Number 2,” the elder’s brow furrowed. He gently tapped the tabletop with his index finger a few times. After a moment, he spoke again.

”I originally had high hopes for that man named Wanping. His strength is considerable. If we could have absorbed him, he would have been more than capable as your deputy. I just never expected his enemy to be Sequence Number 2.”

The elder finished speaking and shook his head with resignation.

”Then forget it. We’ve already lost a sacred beast over a Level 4 professionist; losing more would not be worth the cost! In that case, we can’t solely blame Du Yu for this matter...

”It’s just a pity about the vast amount of Demonic Qi I spent to successfully create that one and only artificial life form, and the Perfect Duplication skill!”

”When Du Yu returns, bring him to me. I believe he’s no longer suitable to be the Apostolic Leader. Go select a Cannibal. Then, pick out ten Peak Level 3 professionists from the army and use them to elevate that Cannibal’s strength to Level 4!

”The moment Du Yu returns, I will extract his skills.”

The voice from the darkness spoke once more. ”Killing ten Peak Level 3 professionists at once... I’m afraid that will be difficult to explain to Yanjing!”

”Hmm.” The elder pondered for a moment before speaking. ”Then include Du Yu. When he returns, kill him. His corpse, along with three Peak Level 3 professionists, should be enough to cultivate one Level 4 Angel Envoy.”

After hearing the elder’s words, the person concealed in the darkness briefly acknowledged and then turned to leave the room.

Once the room was empty, the elder sighed and then retrieved a white handkerchief from his desk drawer.

He gently unbuttoned his shirt, revealing a pure black crystal embedded in his chest.

Gazing at the black crystal on his chest, which gleamed with Black Light, a complex emotion flickered in the elder’s eyes. He then gently wiped the already spotless crystal a couple of times.

After a long moment, the elder finished what he was doing, re-buttoned his shirt, and slowly walked to the main door, where he flipped the room’s light switch.

As the bright incandescent lights flared on, the full view of the room reappeared before the elder’s eyes.

The vast room’s furnishings were quite simple, consisting only of a few sofas and some basic potted plants.

The curtains on the few windows were drawn tightly shut, making the room feel somewhat gloomy despite the illumination.

The elder slowly walked behind his desk, took a green greatcoat from the coat rack, and draped it over his shoulders.

KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK...

A crisp knocking sound came from the door.

”Come in.”

As soon as the elder spoke, the room’s main door was slowly pulled open.

A woman in military uniform saluted the elder and then reported, ”General Peng, the supplies from Yanjing have been delivered, and the quantities have been verified.”

The elder slowly nodded. ”Inform the personnel who came from Yanjing this time. Tell them that we, the Demon Capital Assembly Site, thank Commander Lin!”
