Apocalypse: Master of Soul Beasts

Chapter 242: Chapter 38: The Last Lunch_2

CLICK.

The clear sound of the door latching rang out as Wen Yu crushed the key in his hand into iron scraps.

Maybe I will never come back again?

It’s not that he doesn’t want to, but he can’t...

This place, after all, cannot accommodate a Sequence Number 2!

Listening to the clanging sounds from upstairs, Wen Yu sat on the stairs in front of the door, lit a cigarette, and slowly began to smoke.

After a while, Xiao Xue slowly walked down the stairs, carrying some complicated instruments in her arms.

”Here, help me with this. I can’t carry any more.”

”Then just throw it away.”

Wen Yu frowned. Instead of offering help, he simply replied to Xiao Xue.

”This is quite expensive!”

Hearing Wen Yu, Xiao Xue rolled her eyes and sat down beside him. She began to fiddle with her space ring, which was clearly more advanced than his.

Soon, a large pile of miscellaneous items filled the space in front of them.

Most of it was clothing: uniforms, casual wear, and even a few tight protective suits.

There were also some food and drinks.

After Xiao Xue finished organizing, she packed the instruments into her space ring. Looking at the pile of clothes before her, a flicker of regret crossed her eyes.

”These clothes aren’t expensive, but I saved up for them bit by bit. Now they’re all gone...”

Xiao Xue muttered continuously, clearly blaming Wen Yu for not helping her out.

”Right!” Xiao Xue, still grumbling, suddenly exclaimed. She stepped over the pile of clutter in front of her and headed for the door opposite Wen Yu’s.

KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK.

The crisp sound of knocking echoed through the corridor. Soon, Ye Nan’s wife opened the door.

”Sister-in-law, we’re leaving. These things,” Xiao Xue said, pointing to the clothes and food behind her, ”are for you.”

Hearing Xiao Xue, Ye Nan’s wife first glanced at the large pile of supplies behind her. She hesitated for a moment, then directly grabbed Xiao Xue’s hand.

”You’re leaving? Wait a moment. Brother Ye will be back soon. Why don’t you stay for a quick meal before you go?”

Ye Nan’s wife glanced at Xiao Xue, her eyes somewhat evasive.

Unfortunately, neither Wen Yu nor Xiao Xue noticed her expression.

Xiao Xue hesitated for a moment, then turned to look at Wen Yu.

Wen Yu extinguished his cigarette and smiled at Ye Nan’s wife.

”Then we’ll trouble you, Sister-in-law.”

Hearing Wen Yu’s reply, Ye Nan’s wife showed a somewhat complicated smile, but she didn’t stop talking.

”It’s no trouble, no trouble at all! Come in, come in and sit down!”

...

Ye Nan had gone out scavenging in the morning. Perhaps he hadn’t gone far, as he returned before noon.

Seeing Wen Yu, Ye Nan forced a complex smile.

Wen Yu cradled Cyclops in one arm while reading a fairy tale to Ye Nan’s child.

Star and Cyclops were also captivated by the fairy tale, quietly staring at the book in Wen Yu’s hand.

Wen Yu looked up, saw Ye Nan’s strained smile, and couldn’t help but ask.

”What’s the matter, Brother Ye?”

”Nothing, nothing. What brings you here today, brother?”

”We’re leaving. Sorry for troubling you these past two days, Brother Ye. Your wife insisted we stay for a meal.”

Wen Yu finished and shrugged at Ye Nan.

”It’s what we should do, what we should do...”

Ye Nan lowered his head, his expression a mixture of complexity and embarrassment.

Seeing Ye Nan’s odd expression, Wen Yu asked again.

”Are you sure you’re okay?”

Ye Nan shook his head.

”I’ll go prepare the food in the kitchen.”

Although Wen Yu found it strange, he didn’t dwell on it.

...

In the kitchen, Ye Nan’s wife was preparing the meal.

When Ye Nan walked into the kitchen, the atmosphere grew somewhat tense.

Both were silent. Only the constant GURGLE GURGLE sound from the old pressure cooker broke the silence.

After a moment, Ye Nan’s wife spoke first.

”Give it to me.”

Her voice was very low. Combined with the various noises in the kitchen, it was difficult for anyone outside to hear what they were saying.

Besides, even if Wen Yu could hear, he wouldn’t know what ”it” referred to.

Ye Nan put down the kitchen knife he was using to chop vegetables. He hesitated for a long moment, then took the small plastic bag Wanping had given him from his pocket.

Seeing her husband’s indecisiveness, Ye Nan’s wife seethed with anger. She snatched the small plastic bag, tore it open, and dumped the entire bag of white powder into the thick soup, stirring vigorously with a utensil!

Ye Nan, behind her, opened his mouth as if to speak, but after a moment, no sound came out.

Once everything was ready, Ye Nan’s wife carried out a large basin and placed the pot of ”enhanced” thick soup on the table.

Behind her, Ye Nan, looking ghastly, followed her out like a walking corpse.

”Come, come, Wen Yu, Xiao Xue, time to eat,” Ye Nan’s wife said, a warm smile on her scarred face.

...

Looking at the food on the table, Wen Yu interrupted Ye Nan’s child, who was reaching for it. ”Let’s pray first,” he said.

This was a custom in Ye Nan’s household, one Wen Yu knew well from the many meals he’d scrounged there.

As soon as Wen Yu finished speaking, he immediately clasped his hands in prayer. Xiao Xue, copying his actions, also began to pray silently.

Seeing the two of them with their eyes closed, silently praying to some unknown deity, Ye Nan’s wife gestured to Ye Nan with her eyes. Then, she rose and ladled a large bowl of the thick soup for Wen Yu.
