Apocalypse: Master of Soul Beasts

Chapter 127: Chapter 84: The Battle about to Begin!_1

”Deal!” Wen Yu answered decisively. There was no reason for Wen Yu to refuse something so beneficial to him.

”See, this is the military’s attitude towards powerful independent heroes like you. Usually, you keep to yourselves, and we keep to ours. But when they need you, they issue high-reward missions. This kind of cooperative relationship is what the military wants!”

”You have to understand, for the higher-ups, it’s better to talk things out than resort to force. There are too many unpredictable factors once you start fighting. What if we genuinely enraged a super powerful expert who decided to come and assassinate our troops every few days? Wouldn’t that be a massive headache for us?”

”So, it’s all about keeping things amicable for mutual benefit, right?” Jiang Wentao chuckled.

Wen Yu carefully considered Jiang Wentao’s words. It seemed he had a point.

”Then what about those guys who establish bases outside and act like tyrants?”

”Those are even easier to deal with. We provide weapons, equipment, and magic crystals to buy their population. Do you think they’d refuse?”

”You have to realize, ordinary people who might be a burden or a liability to these local emperors become an entirely different asset in the hands of the military!”

”If a settlement loses its people, can it still be called a settlement? When its population drops to a certain level, is their leader still considered a faction leader? At best, they’re just a squad leader. At that point, if they want something they lack, the price they’ll have to pay... well, just look at the independent heroes for reference!”

Jiang Wentao smiled at Wen Yu, but his words made Wen Yu feel as if he were glimpsing a whole new world.

This was a world where intellect was the deadliest weapon! Using trade, wealth, and exploiting humanity’s greedy, self-serving nature to directly dismantle the foundations of a power—and all without shedding a drop of blood!

”What if there’s a faction that’s incredibly powerful, so strong that even the military is wary of them?” Wen Yu simply wanted to gauge the military’s attitude towards people like him, who operated outside the system.

”That would be a good thing!” Jiang Wentao stated decisively, his expression extremely serious.

”The military deals in facts! The high command never believes they can end this apocalypse on their own, especially knowing that humanity’s greatest enemy has yet to appear. The emergence of a powerful faction would not only alleviate pressure on the military but also add another layer of security for human survival!”

”The military, especially our current leader, Lin Haifeng, sees things from a different perspective than we do. Commander Lin considers these issues from the standpoint of all humankind.”

”Actually, I greatly admire Commander Lin. He often says,” he paused, then quoted, ”’If the skin is gone, what can the fur attach to?’”

”If everyone in the world dies, who would he, the Supreme Commander of Cathay’s five military regions, be commanding for?”

Wen Yu mulled over the phrase, ”If the skin is gone, what can the fur attach to?” for a long while before shaking his head. The topic of all humanity was too vast for him; he merely wanted to survive well in this apocalyptic world.

”Speaking of which, are you sure you don’t want to consider joining the military?” Jiang Wentao probed once more.

”When I get the chance later, I’ll visit the military. For now, I’ll pass,” Wen Yu replied with a smile.

”Mm, I estimate it won’t take more than a few days for the military to capture Yanjing City. When you have the chance, you can come find me in Yanjing City—as a friend!”

Wen Yu nodded.

”By the way, how do you know all this? Aren’t you just a clueless recruit?”

Hearing Wen Yu’s question, Jiang Wentao just smiled without saying anything. Instead, Monkey, who was behind him, chimed in.

”Our captain isn’t just some clueless recruit. He used to be in our country’s most secretive special forces unit! He’s undertaken missions involving infiltration, espionage, and the like. As a super soldier even more capable than a special agent, how could he not understand these things?”

Wen Yu was immediately speechless. He truly couldn’t comprehend the world of elites!

...

”Come on, have something to eat.” Nearly a hundred professionists had been sitting idly for almost half a day, and most of them could no longer bear their hunger.

Although they had a simple bowl of meat soup back in the barracks, when divided equally, the amount of food each person received was hardly substantial.

Wen Yu directly took out the high-protein energy bars he had just exchanged and distributed them to Jiang Wentao and his three companions.

”By the way, how much ammunition do you have left?” Wen Yu asked Jiang Wentao.

Upon hearing this, Monkey immediately showed Wen Yu the space ring on his hand. ”It’s an E-Class space ring, three by three by three meters. It’s packed with ammunition and weapons. If we go all out, we could level this small area a hundred times over! Burly Bear and the Captain also have some of my ammunition!”

”Mm, that puts my mind at ease.”

The space ring solved the ammunition carrying problem for the military’s super firearms shooters, greatly enhancing the combat potential of this profession.

This also demonstrated that there are no useless professions, only useless professionists!

Chewing on the tasteless energy bar, which felt like rubber, Wen Yu earnestly watched William in the distance, who was directing his men to clear the corpses from the battlefield.

”Hey, Knight, not eating anything?” Wen Yu asked, half-jokingly.

”Not hungry yet,” William replied, giving Wen Yu a perfectly standard smile.

”And you?” Wen Yu asked Chu Ziling.

”I ain’t eating that stuff of yours.” As soon as Chu Ziling finished speaking, he took out a piece of dried meat from his space ring and began to chew on it heartily.

”These two are quite interesting,” Jiang Wentao remarked teasingly.

Wen Yu rolled his eyes. Those two have screws loose! Absolutely!

While the professionists present were either eating or clearing corpses, near the exit of the city wall, two professionists who knew each other used all their strength to hurl the corpses in their hands far away.

The corpses they threw traced a parabola, free-falling from a height of 500 meters. In an instant, they became tiny black dots in the men’s vision.

By the time the two men turned their heads back, the corpses had just landed on the ground outside the city. Therefore, they naturally didn’t notice that as the bodies neared the ground, they seemed to splash into a water surface, sending out ripples.

As the ripples spread, the scene below gradually, though indistinctly, revealed its true form.

Below, a dense, dark mass of bizarre creatures was rapidly advancing towards the city wall.

This was a vast illusion technique! It had enveloped the entire Demon Tribe Army, all for the sake of a surprise attack!

The Demon Tribe’s plan had succeeded because, even now, the Silver Moon Tribe had not sounded the alarm for an enemy attack!
