Apocalypse: Master of Soul Beasts

Chapter 120: Chapter 77: The Last Fortress!_1

”Now, it’s the 1,765th year since the establishment of the Silver Moon Imperial Dynasty, 368 years after the apocalypse began, and also the 27th year of the Demon Fiend’s siege on Silver Moon Holy City!”

”In this world, only Silver Moon Holy City still has anything that can move! Elsewhere, all creatures have been completely wiped out by the Demon Tribe, turning those places into dead zones!”

”This place is what the people of this world call the last bastion!”

Wen Yu’s expression immediately turned grave.

”The Demon Tribe?”

”Yes.”

Jiang Wentao solemnly nodded.

Wen Yu pondered for a moment before cautiously asking, ”The apocalyptic crisis that erupted here... it’s the same as the one on Earth, right?”

”Correct.”

Jiang Wentao looked at Wen Yu with a firm expression.

Wen Yu understood at once. The military knew a lot! They might even know more than a cannon fodder like him, a reborner!

Jiang Wentao then asked, ”As a Sequence holder, you should know what the Demon Tribe is, right?”

”Yes, of course.”

”Good that you know. It seems we won’t need to compete this time; our true enemy has appeared. Let me introduce myself. I am Jiang Wentao, Sequence Number 29, and No. 3 in the military’s super warrior program. My companions beside me are No. 8 and No. 10.”

”I am Wen Yu, Sequence Number 2. Do you have any more information?”

After a moment’s hesitation, Jiang Wentao shared the remaining intelligence.

”The battle has reached its decisive phase; it basically never stops. The situation for Flashing Bluestar is quite dire! I’m afraid we’ll be sent out to die!”

”Heh.”

Upon hearing Jiang Wentao’s words, Wen Yu actually laughed.

”If we’re going to be sent to die, don’t worry, I’m here. I may not be good at much else, but I’m an expert at being cannon fodder!”

Seeing Jiang Wentao’s puzzled expression, Wen Yu gave a mysterious smile and didn’t elaborate.

「...」

BANG.

The fragile barracks door was kicked open, and a silver-haired man strode into the somewhat crowded room.

”Trash!”

As the curse left his lips, an immense sound wave washed over them, making Wen Yu’s whole body go numb!

This man’s physical prowess is at least Level 5 or higher!

If even Wen Yu was affected like this, it was far worse for the others.

The weakest among them were so overwhelmed by the man’s voice that they started bleeding from all seven facial orifices, collapsing limply to the ground, their life status unknown!

HUMPH.

The silver-haired man snorted heavily again. This time, he deliberately lowered his volume, so no further incidents occurred.

”Allow me to introduce myself. I am Walsey, Captain of the Fifth Squadron, 3rd Battalion of Silver Moon Holy City. From today onward, you can consider yourselves to have escaped the fate of cannon fodder. Well, you’ve become the vanguard camp of my Fifth Squadron!”

”To put it bluntly, you’ve gone from being low-level cannon fodder to high-level cannon fodder!”

”Now, I’m giving you thirty minutes to go outside, eat, and fall in. Then, you will return with me to our defensive line and contribute your strength for the Silver Moon Tribe!”

”Anyone not present within thirty minutes will face military justice. Trust me, the taste of military justice will be far more memorable than thirty days of solitary confinement!”

With that said, Walsey strode out of the room.

The barracks immediately erupted with noise.

”What, cannon fodder? What exactly is going on with this trial?”

That was one of the clueless ones, who clearly hadn’t paid attention to what the guide said on the way back to the barracks.

”No way, we have to fight a war? Isn’t this a competitive treasure land?”

That was one of the obstinate ones, still believing a treasure land would be exactly as advertised.

”A war is good! As long as we don’t face those freaks, I’m not afraid of anything!”

And that came from someone confident in their own strength.

”This is big trouble!”

Jiang Wentao’s face turned ashen. He turned to Wen Yu and said, ”The enemies faced by the so-called vanguard camp... are on a completely different level than those faced by the cannon fodder camp!”

Not far away, Sun Ruixing and Sun Aotian also walked over to Wen Yu.

”What should we do, Brother Wen Yu?” Sun Aotian had clearly lost his composure.

”I don’t know.” Wen Yu shook his head directly.

What to do? If I had a way, I’d have run off long ago. What else could I do?

”By the way, where’s Zang Pengfei?”

”Brother Pengfei was teleported out of the treasure land a while ago!”

”Count him lucky. Let’s go eat first, then line up at the entrance. For now, we can only play it by ear.”

Walsey’s earlier display of power was enough to show that in this place, Level 5 individuals were a dime a dozen, Level 6s were everywhere, and even Level 7s and Level 8s weren’t considered top experts. The disparity in strength made everyone feel like puppets on strings, completely unable to resist!

「...」

At the barracks entrance, a large cauldron had been set up at some point.

As the nominal officer, Wen Yu naturally received his food first.

The so-called food was, in reality, a bowl of thick, dark, viscous broth. A deep inhale was enough to catch the strange odor emanating from it.

Forcing down his nausea, Wen Yu drank it. His eyes, however, lit up.

Although the broth tasted awful, it contained a surprising amount of energy!

Wen Yu immediately felt a warmth spread through his body, and his fatigue lessened considerably.

Not long after everyone had finished the broth, Walsey reappeared before them.

”Mm. Follow me.”

He gave a very pretentious and proud nod, seemingly satisfied with the morale of Wen Yu and the others. Then, he turned and led Wen Yu’s group, a cannon fodder contingent of nearly a hundred people, towards the towering city walls in the distance.

Only then did Wen Yu have the opportunity to properly observe the Silver Moon Tribe’s so-called ”last bastion.”

Wen Yu couldn’t estimate the bastion’s total size. However, just by looking at the distant city walls, which seemed like colossal ramparts scraping the sky, he could roughly gauge its scale.

It was incredibly vast, perhaps even larger than City BJ!

However, the wide streets were nearly devoid of pedestrians. Many roadside shops were abandoned; of those that weren’t, eighty percent were closed.

Perhaps it’s because this area is near the military barracks and close to the battlefield, making business difficult. Or perhaps... the population of the Silver Moon Tribe has dwindled to the point where it can no longer support its own economy and trade.

Annihilation! The word suddenly surfaced in Wen Yu’s mind, but he forcefully suppressed it!

Although he didn’t know the exact population of the Silver Moon Tribe, the magnificence of the city walls and the intricacy of the roadside architecture were enough to indicate that they had once been a considerably prosperous tribe. How could they have been beaten so badly by the Demon Tribe? Surely not?

Wen Yu suddenly had a feeling that this trial might not be as simple as he had initially imagined!
