After today’s ordeal, Zhao Daniu felt that even if she hadn’t escaped, even if she still had to be captured and forced to sell herself, she would have no regrets.

As long as her real mother and her sister were safe, she would be willing to die willingly.

The mother and daughters ran out of the bustling area as the surroundings gradually became void of lights and human sounds.

Apart from the chasing and shouting behind them, they seemed to have entered a desolate place.

But the shouting and barking behind them in the quiet dead of night became increasingly frightening.

Zhao Daniu and Zhao Xiaoya both felt somewhat desperate, feeling that no matter how they ran, they couldn’t shake off the pursuers.

The fear and despair of escaping made the mental fortitude of the two rural girls nearly collapse.

Especially Zhao Xiaoya, who was only seven years old.

It was only because she had been doing farm work since she was young and had been following her mother living hand to mouth, searching in various places for the past month; her physical strength was somewhat better.

But no matter how strong she was, she couldn’t match a group of young men who were strong and fiercely courageous.

Feeling that the sounds behind them were getting closer, the mother and daughters seemed to have lost their way, not knowing which direction to run.

Zhao Daniu and Zhao Xiaoya couldn’t help but start sobbing.

He Tiantian also showed a look of panic and helplessness but had to make herself stay strong because she was the mother.

Her voice trembling, she said, ”Don’t be afraid, we will definitely escape today!”

This made the sisters even more frightened.

However, Zhao Xiaoya, true to her role as the female lead, maintained a certain amount of rationality and clarity even in her fear.

At the critical moment, her potential erupted, and her six senses became exceedingly sharp.

”Mom! Sister, I think I hear something over there!”

Pulled by her mother, Zhao Xiaoya staggered along, pointing in one direction and shouting urgently.

”A sound? Let’s go check it out, maybe we’ll encounter a good person!”

He Tiantian deliberately shouted in a surprised voice.

She also seemed to gain strength again as if seeing hope.

Their originally slowing steps suddenly hastened as she grabbed her two daughters and turned into a nearby woods.

”Ah, why is it a baby?”

Following the sound, He Tiantian and her daughters found a swaddled baby, taking steps deep and shallow.

He Tiantian instinctively picked it up and gently soothed it.

The little baby looked only three or four months old but was now flushed in the face.

Having experience with her sister, Zhao Daniu felt the baby’s forehead, ”Mom, he’s burning up. The child has a fever!”

”What a sin. Who could be so heartless as to abandon such a small child in the wilderness?”

He Tiantian couldn’t help but curse, pulling open the swaddling to check if the child was wet.

Instead, she saw a baby boy.

”What? It’s a boy?”

These days, it was common for baby girls to be abandoned, but boys—

Unless unwell or severely ill, it was rare for anyone to abandon a boy.

Even if a family truly couldn’t afford to raise a child, parents would still find a good family to send the boy to.

It wasn’t about selling, but families that adopted boys would certainly give some money, a token of their gratitude.

Of course, another reason to find an abandoned boy in the wilderness was if he was a trafficked child who unexpectedly fell ill, causing the traffickers to consider it troublesome or refuse to spend the money, and simply abandon him.

”...Mom, let’s take him back.”

Zhao Daniu remembered her mother’s obsession with having a ”son.”

It was better to adopt the boy they found rather than continue adopting from other families.

Firstly, it didn’t cost money.

Secondly, it was fate.

Moreover, to put it frankly, this child indirectly saved them.

Zhao Xiaoya also realized that the thugs who had been relentlessly pursuing them seemed to have missed seeing them divert to the roadside but continued straight along the main road.

The desperately vicious gangsters—could they really have shaken them off like that?

Had the three of them found safety?

”You little fella, you’re a lucky star indeed!”

He Tiantian sat down on the grass, gently rocking the swaddle, trying to soothe the child.

Zhao Daniu had already found a stream nearby, wet a cloth, and placed it on the little boy’s forehead to try to cool him down.

Zhao Xiaoya sat obediently beside her mother, her big eyes blinking as she watched, then, following her sister’s lead, she also spoke to her mother—

”Mom, my sister is right; our family really needs a boy, let’s take him back!”

Zhao Xiaoya hadn’t been completely brainwashed by the male-dominated mindset, but she knew very well that in the countryside, it was essential to have a boy in the family.

Not to uphold the family honor or continue the family line, but just to avoid being ridiculed and looked down upon.

Of course, more importantly, with a ”brother,” their parents wouldn’t always think about spending money to adopt, and she and her sister wouldn’t be sold!
