Chapter 828: Chapter 59: War Breaks Out

After the ’Unknown Liquid’ incident, led by Yan Chen, several commanders began discussing defense strategies.

The sound of footsteps approached as a man in a black windbreaker walked up to the seventh floor. The man seemed to have just woken up and was yawning occasionally, followed by what seemed to be a ’Siberian Husky’?

”Which side is this person from?”

”Not ours.”

”Don’t recognize him.”

Several commanders’ confidants denied it.

”Friend, please wait downstairs. We’ll notify you once the defense strategy is agreed upon.”

A well-dressed man in a suit, wearing gold-threaded glasses, blocked Su Xiao with a polite demeanor.

”Hmm?”

The still sleepy Su Xiao was holding a cigarette. He had taken a nap during his free time, as who knew if there would be an opportunity to rest in the coming ten days.

”Friend, I said...”

”Let him in.”

Yan Chen’s voice came through.

”Please.”

The suited man gestured invitingly, as Yan Chen was his leader.

Su Xiao entered the seventh floor, which was bustling compared to the previous deathly silence. The scents of smoke, cigars, and red wine intermingled.

Various Contractors, with distinct expressions, either stood or sat around the seventh floor. Some were silent, others were loudly chattering. The only commonality was the faint aura of blood surrounding them. It was evident they were desperadoes, always ready to fight with anyone.

”Meeting again.”

Sister Control Yan Chen greeted Su Xiao and then continued discussing defense plans with the commanders.

Su Xiao stepped forward, and Yan Chen appeared somewhat puzzled.

”This is a detailed map of the Ancient Ruins. I arrived earlier and drew it out of boredom.”

Su Xiao handed over an exceptionally precise map to Yan Chen and then turned to walk away.

Yan Chen glanced at Bubu Wang, who was following Su Xiao, and roughly guessed how Su Xiao had arrived early.

”This is a huge help. Looks like you have professional mapping skills.”

Yan Chen understood the value of this map.

”With your skills, won’t you join us for the discussions?”

Yan Chen extended an invitation, but Su Xiao waved it off.

Su Xiao did not participate in the commanders’ discussions. He understood his own command abilities. He had never managed an adventure group before, let alone made decisions about how the Contractors should set up defenses.

In areas he’s unfamiliar with, Su Xiao refrains from interference or making decisive comments. Compared to Su Xiao, those commanders are the real experts in this area.

Strong in strength but pointing fingers in unfamiliar fields, such people annoy Su Xiao the most. His typical response to such individuals is to cut them down first and discuss later.

Seeing Su Xiao not interested in participating in the discussions, Yan Chen nodded secretly. Indeed, lone rangers are strong, but most of them are unruly.

However, in this war, there were no unruly lone rangers; a total of four had the qualifications to reach the seventh floor—two men and two women.

Among the four, the two women were clearly acquainted. Strangely, they hadn’t formed an adventure group. They were Ada and Insect Girl. Upon seeing Su Xiao, they quickly turned their heads.

”Why is this monster here?”

Ada glanced sneakily at Su Xiao.

”No idea, maybe just pretend we don’t know him?”

Insect Girl was also quite wary. In the Survival Trial World, Su Xiao had left too deep an impression within the Insect Nest. In their eyes, Su Xiao was an extremely dangerous cunning old fox + monster.

As for the remaining two, one was the Gray Bear, who had previously tasted the ’Unknown Liquid.’ This guy was puffing on a cigar with a very sullen expression.

The last one was Su Xiao. He was leaning against a stone pillar, holding a tablet. Judging by the sounds coming from it, he seemed to be playing a game.

Seeing this scene, Yan Chen raised an eyebrow. With Su Xiao’s menacing aura, Yan Chen hadn’t expected him to be someone with a hobby like gaming.

After about an hour, several commanders agreed on a defense strategy.

The area of Alterac Ancient Ruins was too vast. With over seven hundred Contractors, trying to completely defend the Alterac Ancient Ruins was akin to a fool’s dream.

Since they couldn’t hold it, the commanders chose not to defend it, opting to retract the defense line and concentrate manpower to defend the ’Dusk Palace’ and the nearby Second District.

The three corners of the Dusk Palace had three stone bridges, renowned as the best defensive sites. They could hold their ground or retreat into the Dusk Palace behind.

Of course, the Reincarnation Paradise side wouldn’t choose to defend all three stone bridges from the beginning. After discussions, the commanders decided to first defend the outer Second District. If they couldn’t hold the Second District, they’d retreat to the stone bridges. If the stone bridges fell, they’d keep retreating.

The Contractors from Apocalypse Paradise, aiming to capture the World Core, would first need to break through the Second District, then the three stone bridges. Even after breaching the stone bridges, they’d still have to enter the Dusk Palace and make their way up, layer by layer, to the seventh floor.

The difficulty was high, and it was undeniable that even before the war began, the Apocalypse Paradise side was at a disadvantage.

If the Apocalypse Paradise’s Contractors were in charge of defending the World Core, they definitely wouldn’t choose such a rigid defense method. This layer-by-layer defense network, while appearing tight, had a fatal flaw: no retreat path. If they couldn’t hold, they’d die, with no escape route. If Xi dared to set it up this way, over 70% of her subordinates would oppose it.

If the Apocalypse Paradise side genuinely managed to reach the 7th floor of the Dusk Palace, it would mean that almost all of the Reincarnation Paradise’s Contractors had perished. Before that, the Apocalypse Paradise’s Contractors couldn’t possibly make it up there.

Succeed or die trying; that was the defense approach of the Reincarnation Paradise’s Contractors.

Want the World Core? You’d have to kill them all first. Until then, the Apocalypse Paradise’s Contractors could only watch from outside.

Having settled on the plan, the leaders and the group of seven exited the Dusk Palace, where hundreds of Contractors looked towards those leaders.

After Yan Chen explained the plan, the Contractors barely hesitated before agreeing to hold their ground; as for retreat, nobody even mentioned it.

Failure in the World Struggle War meant everyone would perish; under such circumstances, considering retreat was meaningless. Instead of thinking about retreat, it was wiser to think about how to survive the Contractor free-for-all.

Members of the Adventure group received their leaders’ orders and began spreading out to the nearby District 2, forming lines of defense. The Loners were dispersed among the Adventure group members, while some long-range snipers crawled to the top of the Dusk Palace, which was the strategic high point.

Su Xiao stood in front of the stone steps of the Dusk Palace. He would not participate in the defense just yet; he was waiting for someone, someone who would certainly come looking for him.

”Bai Ye, although you’re not my subordinate, now is not the time to hold back.”

Yan Chen sat on the stone steps nearby, his gaze fixed on the Contractors defending District 2, which was a natural labyrinth; therefore, the defense setup wasn’t too difficult.

”I don’t have time at the moment; there’s a very troublesome enemy I need to resolve.”

Su Xiao was waiting for Duke Lan, believing that Duke Lan would definitely come to him.

”A troublesome enemy? Can you describe their characteristics? I might have clues about the Apocalypse Paradise Contractors; I have quite a bit of intel.”

Serving on the same front and since Su Xiao had previously shared a map, Yan Chen was generous with his information.

”As for characteristics, he’s a Mechanical Summoner...”

Su Xiao hadn’t finished when Yan Chen interjected, ”Does he control a metal arrow with a whistle? Can mechanical summons explode?”

”Yes, have you seen him?”

”Of course.”

Yan Chen pulled at the neckline of his clothes, exposing a coin-sized scar on his collarbone: ”Earlier, I was careless and almost got ambushed by that guy. Are you planning to deal with him?”

”Yes, I had a skirmish with him before, but he escaped.”

Upon hearing the word ’escaped,’ Yan Chen’s eyes lit up, and he asked, ”Confident?”

”Yes, a seventy percent chance he’ll die, the remaining thirty percent I might die.”

Su Xiao had thought of a strategy to counter Duke Lan, but due to his opponent’s versatile skills and the unexpected scenarios during battles, he faced a thirty percent chance of dying.

”You’re definitely the Night of Beheading; if any of my subordinates spot him, I’ll notify you via the war channel. Whether I survive or not is unsure; my sister is quite beautiful.”

Yan Chen’s words seemed to praise his sister’s beauty, indicating brotherly concern, but in reality, Yan Chen feared that if he died, his sister might end up with another man.

”Looks like you care for your sister a lot.”

Su Xiao vaguely sensed something was off in Yan Chen’s words.

After saying this, Yan Chen walked into the Dusk Palace.

”That Sister Control.”

Su Xiao was not foolish; he understood what was going on. The Contractors of Reincarnation Paradise had surprisingly outspoken personalities.

Twenty-six hours swiftly passed, with the Contractors of Reincarnation Paradise on full alert, their defenses seamlessly structured; however, not a single Contractor from Apocalypse Paradise attacked, and they hadn’t even appeared, leaving District 2 in a deathly silence.

About ten minutes later, the silence was shattered.

Whoosh~ whoosh...

The sound of dense winds came from above. The Contractors looked up to see hundreds of Green Phosphorus Burning Bottles.

”Air strike!”

The Contractors of Reincarnation Paradise responded swiftly; bullets, arrows, Nen spheres, spell spheres, and even rockets aimed at those Green Phosphorus Burning Bottles.

Boom, boom. Boom...

Explosions resonated, with vast swathes of green flames falling in front of District 2, incinerating trees and weathered stones.

Orderly footsteps approached, with at least ten thousand Beastman soldiers emerging from the forest in Zone 3.

Xi floated in the sky above the forest, observing the Contractors of Reincarnation Paradise from afar.

”Kill.”

Xi’s slender finger pointed ahead, and over ten thousand Beastman soldiers marched forward. Reincarnation Paradise had contribution shops and military ranks; Apocalypse Paradise did, as well. The terrifying fact was that the war merits of all Apocalypse Paradise Contractors had been transferred to Xi, raising her rank to command over ten thousand Beastman soldiers.

”This woman is unexpectedly troublesome, but... flowers in a greenhouse wilt quicker.”

A black-haired, red-eyed teenager tore off his shirt, revealing his body strapped with at least a hundred various bombs.

The black-haired, red-eyed teenager suddenly dashed from the formation of Reincarnation Paradise directly towards the Beastman soldiers. It’s clear that he’s not mentally stable; no sane person would bind their body with bombs and rush into an army.

Seeing this, Xi’s beautiful eyes furrowed.

”These lunatics.”

Xi’s eyes turned fiery red.

Boom!

The black-haired, red-eyed teenager self-detonated before even reaching the Beastmen, sending flames skyward, dirt flying, and smoke billowing.

A few seconds later, a somewhat staggering figure stood up within the dust.

”That hurt.”

The black-haired, red-eyed teenager moves his neck, crackling as a glow flickers, and another hundred varied bombs materialized on his body.
