...

Su Xiao had triggered an ambiguous mission. If he had triggered a mission from other storyline characters, he might be in a good mood, but regarding Caesar...

Su Xiao glanced at Caesar, who was grinning foolishly with a mouth full of yellow teeth. Caesar’s intent was obvious—to drag Su Xiao onto his pirate ship.

”Caesar, even trying to reel in a white wolf empty-handed should have a limit.”

Having interacted with Caesar for some time, Su Xiao was somewhat aware of Caesar’s character.

This mission was laden with traps. First, Su Xiao had to help Carlos with treatment in Caesar’s name. This meant that even if he successfully removed that energy from Carlos, Carlos might not thank him but rather owe the favor to Caesar, since Su Xiao was brought by Caesar to assist. So this ’in the name of Nicholas Caesar’ was highly problematic.

Secondly, the reward was suspicious. ’Caesar’s gratitude’ was dubious; considering Caesar’s character, his gratitude could very well be something ’odd’, like a cracked bowl, a bowl of soup? Or merely a verbal expression of thanks.

Don’t think it absurd; with Caesar’s thickness of skin, there’s more than a 70% chance of this happening. Even if Caesar had a conscience, that so-called gratitude might have a lot of water.

”My dear friend, what are you talking about? How could Caesar...”

Before Caesar could finish, Su Xiao spoke up, ”Bu Bu, bite him!”

The simple-minded Bubu Wang didn’t care who Caesar was as a special storyline character. In Bubu Wang’s eyes, Caesar was just a little green dwarf, so it just went up and bit him.

”Wait, you silly dog, we’re friends, how could you bear to bite me... ow!”

Caesar let out a scream as Bubu Wang bit his buttocks, its head swinging back and forth, and Bubu Wang temporarily discarded its morals to help Su Xiao deal with Caesar.

”Stop, stop, I’ll show you something good.”

Su Xiao raised his hand, and Bubu Wang let go; this open-door dog policy clearly made the stingy Caesar somewhat helpless.

”That thing I happened to get, it’s something from a few years back.”

Caesar walked into the bedroom, and the sound of searching came from within. After a long while, Caesar emerged holding a black brooch.

This brooch resembled a name tag, small in size and unobtrusive when worn at the collar.

The brooch emitted a dark purple glow, deep as if it had been enhanced several times in Reincarnation Paradise.

”Help me solve my current problem, and it’s yours. Even though I don’t know its purpose, my instincts tell me this item I got from a corpse is quite good.”

Caesar only knew the item was an accessory, and to Caesar, it was useless. He couldn’t use it at all.

When Su Xiao touched the black brooch, his body briefly hardened; this was the equipment he’d been searching for!

...

Su Xiao remained calm, although inside he was highly excited; the Demon Hunting Suit piece he had been searching for was right in front of him.

Su Xiao had searched the trading markets for this item for a long time, yet found no clues, as if the Demon Hunting Suit, aside from the ’Demon Hunting Ring’, didn’t even exist.

Today, at last, Su Xiao found one of the components of the Demon Hunting Suit—a brooch.

The attributes of the three Demon Hunting Suit pieces themselves are not extremely strong; what is strong is the set attributes activated upon collecting all three: Power +15, Agility +10, Stamina +10, Close Combat Damage increased by 40%, Maximum Life Value +20%.

What concept is this? For any close-combat fighter, these are the dream bonuses.

However, the Demon Hunting Suit is extremely rare. In previous derivative worlds, Su Xiao killed many strong foes and completed various hidden tasks, yet he didn’t even find a clue about the Demon Hunting Suit.

Now, one piece of the Demon Hunting Suit appeared in front of Su Xiao, and he suspected it was dropped by another Contractor who died in this world and was subsequently obtained by Caesar.

The origin of this equipment is not important; what’s important is how to get it.

Robbing it? Clearly infeasible. The Black Soil Fortress houses tens of thousands of troops, Caesar’s relationship with Carlos is not ordinary, and robbery would be the most foolish method.

Moreover, from Caesar’s expression, this is clearly compensation for treating Carlos.

”What is this thing used for?”

Su Xiao deliberately asked like that. If he let Caesar see through his desire, getting this item would become exceedingly difficult due to Caesar’s personality.

”Hmm~ this thing, uh~ that~”

Caesar was momentarily speechless.

”It’s craftsmanship is decent, without any alchemy fluctuations; is this a magic tool?”

Su Xiao scrutinized the [Demon Hunter Proof], his gaze very discriminating.

”Cough~ that’s right, this is a magic tool, my dear friend. Just help Caesar solve this problem, and it’s yours.”

Caesar actually had no idea what this thing was, just felt it had some value, something useless to eat, but a pity to discard.

”This...”

Su Xiao took the [Demon Hunter Proof], yet regrettably, he didn’t obtain its ownership.

”If this thing serves as compensation, it’s not impossible, but it should...”

”Deal!”

Caesar interrupted, shouting, detecting Su Xaio attempting to squeeze additional benefits from him.

”...”

Su Xiao stared at Caesar, who wore the expression of a pig unafraid of being scalded by boiling water.

”My dear friend, the deal has been made, let us commence quickly.”

Caesar snatched the [Demon Hunter Proof] from Su Xiao’s hands; no regret was visible on Su Xiao’s face.

”Once it’s done, I will be squad leader.”

Su Xiao’s message was clear, to become promoted in rank. Of course, this was merely a smoke bomb, as the grand skirmish between Contractors was about to begin. By then, ranks would mean little to Su Xiao, not accustomed to leading troops into battle or winning people’s hearts.

”Squad leader...”

Caesar rubbed his chin, seeming hesitant, but was inwardly pleased to avoid forking out anything else.

”Deal, when it’s done, you’ll wear this brooch as squad leader.”

”Deal.”

Su Xiao accepted the special mission, which reward had transformed into: [Demon Hunter Proof] + Squad Leader rank.

Bubu Wang subtly turned its head, letting out a sigh, that little look seemingly saying, ”Master, you are quite the actor.”

Su Xiao breathed a silent sigh; [Demon Hunter Proof] must remain secure, disguising it with a Carlos-bestowed Squad Leader title couldn’t be more fitting. As for squeezing additional benefits from Caesar, it was never considered. Caesar’s stinginess meant that offering [Demon Hunter Proof] was already the limit.

Had Su Xiao agreed too swiftly early on, it would have complicated matters; facing Caesar was no trivial challenge. If anything felt off, Caesar would promptly retract the [Demon Hunter Proof] and escalate the price. Fortunately, Su Xiao was sufficiently composed and meticulous so as not to rouse Caesar’s suspicion.

Presently, it came to testing Su Xiao’s ’alchemy skill’. However, aiding Carlos in purging the unknown energy wasn’t actually through alchemy—it was just a ruse.

If executed well, Su Xiao could gain substantial profits, perhaps a yield not inferior to the [Demon Hunter Proof], which was his initial desired benefit. The [Demon Hunter Proof] was an unexpected bonus.

Success depends on providence; planning relies on human effort. Su Xiao had exerted his utmost to achieve the best possible outcome.
