Chapter 820: Chapter 51: Assassination?

Caesar, as if receiving a great pardon, lunged forward and hugged Carlos’s leg with all his might, his eyes quickly turning red, tears streaming down.

”Lord Carlos, I... oh~”

Caesar sniffled, truly reduced to a snotty, tearful mess, almost to the point of being unable to speak.

”Caesar, you’ve worked hard.”

Carlos shook his leg while speaking, fearing Caesar would wipe snot on his trousers. He knew full well what kind of person Caesar was.

Of course, Caesar wouldn’t let go. Not only did he wrap his arms around Carlos’s leg, but his short legs also clung on, like a koala hugging a tree.

”Lord Carlos, please listen to me. I inadvertently discovered this alchemy prodigy. He managed to master a potion recipe before. Under my guidance, that potion was successfully developed, and I also discovered...”

It seemed Caesar was trying hard to fabricate Su Xiao’s background, but actually, Caesar was taking credit.

”Stop. So, you’re saying his alchemy skills are above yours, and you accidentally discovered he could save Carlos?”

The Night Elf Princess Anna pointed out what Caesar was trying hard to conceal.

”Of course not!”

Caesar’s tears stopped.

”Caesar, I won’t forget your kindness in this matter. As long as I live, you will always be the quartermaster of the Iron-blooded Legion.”

Carlos knew what Caesar wanted, then turned his gaze to Su Xiao.

”I witnessed your performance on the battlefield, especially the moment you fought your way out from the Tribal Army, Squad Leader Bai Ye.”

Carlos and Anna walked into the room, Caesar closed the door and firmly locked it, even activating the alchemy defense array on the door.

”You know my situation?”

Carlos sat on Caesar’s ’exclusive sofa,’ smiling at Su Xiao.

”Situation?” Su Xiao was taken aback, then guessed, ”The person Caesar wants me to treat is you, Legion Commander, not Officer Vincent Hohen?”

Su Xiao seemed a bit surprised.

”It’s me.”

Carlos glanced at Caesar, who quickly put on a smile.

”You’ve done well.”

Carlos was praising Caesar for not casually revealing his situation. Previously, Carlos’s inquiry seemed casual. If Su Xiao claimed to know, regardless of the treatment outcome, Caesar would die.

”Legion Commander, do you think... I should tell Bai Ye your specific situation? He needs to prepare the potion based on your condition.”

Though greedy, Caesar wasn’t stupid; he knew procedures must be followed. As it stood, Su Xiao wasn’t fully aware of Carlos’s condition, not even knowing that the person to be treated was Carlos.

”Wait.” The Night Elf Princess Anna spoke, ”Is he trustworthy?”

Anna scrutinized Su Xiao, her demeanor cold and suspicious.

”Absolutely trustworthy, Miss Anna. I, Caesar, can vouch for him.”

”Your assurance?”

Anna frowned delicately, seemingly pondering something.

”If you ask about trustworthiness, Bai Ye couldn’t possibly be from the Tribal Alliance.”

Carlos leaned back in the chair with his eyes closed, having witnessed Su Xiao killing enemies on the battlefield before; the number slain and the ruthless approach are impossible for a spy.

”Even if he’s trustworthy, whether he can help you remove that thing is unknown. This isn’t something that can be assured with a simple promise...”

Carlos waved his hand.

”Anna, no need to say more. Bai Ye, tell me how you plan to help me remove that unknown energy.”

In truth, Carlos no longer cared whether Su Xiao was an enemy spy. He could sense Su Xiao’s strength. Such a person, if truly an enemy spy, would die here today regardless of the outcome.

Carlos knew he didn’t have much time left, and hoping that Caesar could clear that unknown energy was slim. He was already treating the dead horse as if it were alive.

Even if he died here today, Black Soil Fortress would immediately be taken over by his deputy. These arrangements were already in place.

Exchanging three months of remaining life for the life of a powerful enemy spy and the exposure of an unknown force within the Empire was quite worthwhile.

Moreover, what if the other side really could help remove the energy within his body? He was dying anyway; what harm was there in trying?

Although Carlos had three months left, he vaguely felt the unknown energy within him was about to erupt. When that happened, even if he didn’t die, he would be left feeble, with a severely diminished strength, possibly bedridden, a fate worse than death, considering his many enemies within the Empire.

The four people and one dog in the room were silent. Su Xiao didn’t care about Carlos, Anna, or Caesar’s thoughts. Whatever suspicions these three had didn’t matter. He only needed to do three things: help Carlos remove the energy within him, obtain the ”Demon Hunter Proof” from Caesar, and then leave Black Soil Fortress.

Just a moment ago, Su Xiao received a prompt from Reincarnation Paradise, which was why he hadn’t spoken much.

”Legion Commander, if I sensed correctly, the energy within you leans towards the dark attribute. It strengthens you, naturally, but also carries side effects, like seeing illusions intermittently or suddenly wanting to destroy things in front of you.”

Su Xiao placed his finger on Carlos’s arm, carefully sensing the situation inside Carlos.

”You...”

Carlos sat up straight; his internal energy was indeed dark attribute, and that it made him stronger were things he had told Caesar. As for the hallucinations and bloodlust, he hadn’t told anyone—not even Anna.

”Did I get it right, Legion Commander?”

Su Xiao needed to confirm the clarity of the energy within Carlos. Upon close sensing, he discovered that the energy wasn’t purely the Power of the Demon but a mutated form of it.

”Correct. Sometimes, I see pools of blazing fire and feel an immense urge to kill.”

Carlos smiled. Su Xiao being able to point out these details meant there was hope for his treatment.

Anna noticed this too, her gaze towards Su Xiao softening a bit. Previously a suspicious character, Su Xiao had become Carlos’s only hope. This woman was rather changeable.

”A pool of fire?”

Su Xiao took out the Slaughter Dagger, ”Apologies, Legion Commander.”

With that, Su Xiao made a cut on Carlos’s hand. Carlos’s physical defense was too strong; without the Slaughter Dagger, his skin couldn’t be breached.

”Good knife.”

Carlos, with interest, observed the Slaughter Dagger, not caring about the blood spurting from his hand.

Red-black blood appeared on Carlos’s hand. As it flowed from the wound, it seemed reluctant to touch the air, beginning to retract into the wound.

”This is...”

Carlos stared in surprise at his hand; this had never happened before.

”It’s already this severe.”

Su Xiao frowned, turning to the experiment table to begin mixing potions.

”What about my condition? Is there hope?”

Carlos didn’t look well, given how abnormal his blood was.

”If untreated, you would turn into some kind of monster or lose consciousness within days. If my perception is accurate, there’s some consciousness within that energy in you, though it lacks subjective intention.”

Su Xiao gestured for Caesar to bring the ”Unstable Potion,” and upon receiving it, he uncorked the bottle.

”Drink it.”

A strong, sweet, and salty smell filled the room, and Carlos’s eye twitched, ”This won’t kill me?”

”If it’s you, there’s a ninety percent chance it won’t.”

Su Xiao held the vial, leaving the decision to Carlos.

Carlos took the vial and drank the liquid inside in a few gulps. A few seconds later, Carlos sat upright, motionless, as the potion began to take effect.

”What will you do next? Kill me?”

Carlos’s voice was odd; his lips were numb.

”I won’t.”

Su Xiao withdrew the longsword from Carlos’s waist and pierced it through Carlos’s chest—all happening in a flash—rendering Caesar and Anna speechless.

”I... will... kill... you!”

Anna’s expression went beyond anger; it was an indescribable desire to tear Su Xiao apart.

”Anna, calm down.”

Blood trickled from Carlos’s mouth, yet he was smiling.

”This feels good. It’s been a long time since I’ve felt so light.”

Previously, Carlos had felt as if burdened by a thick, heavy ’iron coat’ for years. After Su Xiao’s stab, the ’iron coat’ melted like snow and ice.
