Chapter 808: Chapter 39: Assault on the Town

The tribal soldiers on the battlefield were quickly driven back, with casualties rapidly increasing.

With large-scale casualties and the leaders of the orcs and giant trolls not coming out to stabilize the situation, the tribal soldiers began to retreat on a large scale.

The first to flee were not the wounded leaders of the Beastman race, nor the giant trolls, but the goblins. Noticing the unfavorable battle situation, they immediately took their beloved war machines and fled.

Next to flee were the Troll Tribe, due to their heavy casualties.

After the retreat of the Goblin Clan and Troll Tribe, the Beastman race couldn’t sit still either and began to flee on a large scale. As for the hot-tempered Dwarf Clan, they also started to retreat; after all, with the other three tribes fleeing, there was no point in continuing the fight.

”Kill them all, hahaha.”

The Imperial soldiers formed a battle formation, surrounding and slaughtering the tribal army that couldn’t escape in time; what was once a stalemate turned into a one-sided massacre.

Su Xiao, blending in with the crowd, occasionally slaughtered a member of the tribal army. To his surprise, he discovered that the life value restored by his talent ability ’Soul Devourer’ after killing an enemy was quite special. Each time he killed an enemy, he could restore about 13-15 points of life and mana value. The ability to restore such an amount was due to the 200-point mana value cap increased by Soul Devourer, enhancing the recovery effect by 50%.

The life value restored through Soul Devourer could slowly heal Su Xiao’s injuries. Although this healing was slow, it was more thorough than potion recovery.

After slaughtering a dozen enemy soldiers, Su Xiao’s feeling of chest tightness disappeared, and his breathing became noticeably smoother.

Noticing this, Su Xiao slaughtered more fervently, and in no time, he had killed dozens of tribal soldiers.

The battlefield was now different from before; killing a tribal soldier depended on luck, as the tribal army was in large-scale retreat, with the Imperial army in pursuit.

Screams and shouts of battle mixed together as a Contractor from Apocalypse Paradise looked utterly desperate, surrounded by far too many Imperial soldiers.

After just a few minutes, that Contractor’s mana value was exhausted, swallowed by the crowd. If the Imperial side were defeated, Contractors from Reincarnation Paradise wouldn’t fare much better.

The pursuit began as the Imperial army left small units to guard the fortress, and the remaining soldiers chased the tribal army.

Su Xiao was part of the pursuit force, and as long as the pursuit was ongoing, the war was not over. As for redeeming the ”Holy Oak Tree Trunk,” there was no point in thinking about it for now; when the war started, Reincarnation Paradise had prompted that the merit exchange store was closed, and it would only reopen once the Imperial army successfully stationed at Black Soil Fortress.

During the battle, Su Xiao had observed the situation at Black Soil Fortress. The interior was severely damaged, and the stone and lava slopes at the front and back needed to be cleared, as well as opening the blocked passages inside the fortress. These inner passages would allow the Imperial army easy access to the fortress. When the tribal army took the fortress, they sealed dozens of inner passages.

Until all this was dealt with, the Imperial army couldn’t station themselves inside Black Soil Fortress. Handling everything would take at least 1-2 days.

This meant the merit store wouldn’t open for at least 1-2 days, so Su Xiao wasn’t in a hurry; there was no point in rushing.

...

Three hours later.

A regiment of the Imperial army, which had stormed into the Tribal Alliance’s territory, marched neatly. This was the army that had fought on Black Soil Fortress earlier.

Though it seemed that after chasing for three hours they had gone deep into the tribe’s territory, it was not the case. This regiment was not meant to penetrate deep into the tribal lands but to clear small, scattered groups of tribal soldiers that had retreated around Black Soil Fortress.

An Empire Officer on a warhorse led the regiment. His name was Russell, a staunch supporter of Carlos and a competent figure within the Iron-blooded Legion.

After Carlos came to power, Russell was promoted several ranks owing to his formidable strength and commendable command skills. Previously, because of his humble origins, he hadn’t been heavily utilized. Fortunately, the new Legion Commander Carlos didn’t care about backgrounds, focusing only on abilities.

”Report, Commander Russell, a small town under the jurisdiction of the Tribal Alliance has been spotted ahead.”

A scout knelt on one knee before Russell’s warhorse, respect evident in his expression.

”Population.”

Russell spoke few words and seldom smiled. Impressions of being iron-blooded, stern, with a skinny frame exuding a chilling aura were what he left in others.

”Approximately 20,000 to 40,000 people. Due to time constraints, it’s impossible to provide more detailed information.”

The scout swallowed nervously.

”Someone, execute him.”

Russell’s tone was calm, leaving the scout in a daze.

”Mercy, Lord Russell, I truly...” the scout pleaded, face pale with terror.

”Silence.”

As Russell’s words fell, a male Elf appeared swiftly from behind him. The speed of this male Elf was extreme. Before the scout could react, the Elf’s dagger had already swung, and a head flew.

”That old fool, Marquis Mark, is utterly useless. Tribal spies have infiltrated the scout units, and every time Lord Carlos wants to address the spy issue, that old fool hesitates.”

Russell didn’t even spare the scout’s corpse a glance. As a member of the scout unit responsible for guarding Black Soil Fortress, not knowing the situation of nearby towns was a basic failure. Even if he wasn’t a spy, such negligence would cost his head in wartime.

The Imperial army began advancing toward the small town. Su Xiao, embedded in their ranks, soon saw a sizable town on the horizon.

Swoosh—

The sound of breaking through the air approached. A spherical object arced toward the Imperial army—a goblin bomb.

Boom!

Flames erupted violently, shattering a large section of the Imperial army; a severed leg wrapped in ragged cloth landed near Su Xiao.

”All-out Assault.”

The Imperial army surged fiercely toward the tribal town, and the remnants of the tribal army near the town retreated inside.

With the Imperial army not far from the town, it took only a few minutes before large numbers of Imperial soldiers flooded into the town, engaging remnants of the tribal army in street battles.

Screams echoed from within the town. These were the voices of civilians living there, including beastmen, goblins, and others—mostly females. Within the Tribal Alliance, young or adult males were usually forcibly conscripted into the military.

When Su Xiao entered the town with the army, the battle had already quieted. The attackers were but a small band of tribal soldiers.

Walking through the town, Su Xiao didn’t see any civilians on the streets. They were hidden behind windows, their expressions dull as they watched the Imperial soldiers on the streets. Most of the town’s houses were stone constructions with two levels, densely packed. The streets were muddy, as it had rained recently.

The Imperial soldiers began searching the town, occasionally clashing with scattered tribal soldiers.

It was unwise to advance deeper into the tribal lands, making the Imperial army, including Su Xiao, stop in the town to rest, with plans to return to Black Soil Fortress afterward.

After clearing the town of tribal soldiers, the Imperial soldiers gradually dispersed, visibly more relaxed.

Su Xiao sat on the stone steps of a civilian house, consuming a ration biscuit to replenish stamina. Although dried food wasn’t hard to eat, the texture was quite dry.ℴ
