Chapter 801: Chapter 32: Ambush

On the lava slope behind the Black Soil Fortress.

Su Xiao was among the imperial soldiers. The earlier sense of crisis had disappeared; he was chewing on a compressed biscuit, occasionally sipping water to avoid choking.

During war, he couldn’t afford to worry about whether the food tasted good or not; quickly filling his stomach was the key.

After resting for a moment among the crowd, Su Xiao’s exhaustion faded. He had expended a lot of stamina in a short time earlier, but fortunately, he hadn’t overexerted himself, so his stamina recovered quickly, thanks to his physical attribute.

The wounds on his body were roughly treated. The deeper ones were sutured, while the shallower ones were temporarily left untreated, hastily bandaged with a special medical gauze.

After bandaging the special gauze, a cool sensation came from the wound; this was the gauze’s analgesic effect.

The situation for the Imperial Army was excellent. At this point, the Imperial Army had already charged over the top of the Black Soil Fortress, pushing the Tribal Army back to the rocky slope below. If they could maintain this advantage, the Imperial Army could drive back the Tribal Army in no time.

Taking advantage of the break to recover stamina, Su Xiao checked his current merit points.

[Current Merit: 9,243 points.]

Seeing this amount of merit, Su Xiao wasn’t surprised. By rough estimate, he had killed at least over 3,000 enemies in this battle. Although he only fought for two hours, he had slain many while attacking the Black Soil Fortress from behind the Tribal Army.

If it were just over 3,000 ordinary soldiers, it wouldn’t amount to such a high merit count. Su Xiao had previously sniped more than 50 dwarf crossbowmen, with each kill earning him 60 merit points. Moreover, during his charge within the Tribal Army, he also killed some other special types of soldiers. Including the 1,436 merit points he had saved up before, having 9,243 merit points now was not surprising.

Exchanging for the ”Holy Oak Tree Trunk” required 9,000 merit points. Su Xiao’s merit points were already enough for the exchange. Unfortunately, it was wartime, and leaving the battlefield would amount to desertion, resulting in the immediate erasure of his merits.

Su Xiao’s stamina recovered a bit, and he prepared to return to the battlefield to earn some more merit points. After all, aside from the ”Holy Oak Tree Trunk,” the merit shop had other good items.

Passing through friendly soldiers, Su Xiao reached the top of the Black Soil Fortress.

The Tribal Army had been driven back to the other side of the rocky slope, giving the Imperial Army an advantageous position. This accelerated the Tribal Army’s retreat.

Su Xiao walked quickly through the Black Soil Fortress and arrived at the rocky slope, where the Tribal Army appeared ahead.

”Fellow kin, we cannot retreat; our homeland is behind us.”

A Minotaur roared, and it was indeed true. If the Tribal Army were driven back, the loss would not just be the Black Soil Fortress. The Imperial Army might then drive straight into tribal territory, launching a reverse invasion.

Although the Dragon Soaring Empire didn’t care much for the Tribal Alliance’s barren lands, they were very interested in destroying the Alliance’s cities or villages. War was about ’give and take’; persistently suffering invasions would demoralize their side.

The roaring Minotaur was exceptionally brave; Minotaurs were the strongest branch of the Beastman race, with individual strength far exceeding other Beastmen.

Su Xiao set his eyes on the Minotaur. Utilizing the cover of nearby friendly soldiers, he quietly approached the enemy.

”Imperial swine!”

The Minotaur grabbed an imperial soldier, using the two imperial soldiers in his hands as weapons to violently smash other nearby soldiers.

The imperial soldiers formed a circle, knowing well that Minotaurs were tough to handle. They couldn’t give him a chance to charge; otherwise, those horns would impale countless of their own.

On the battlefield, the Minotaur fought fiercely, having already smashed three imperial soldiers to death with the deformed corpses in his hands.

”Huff, huff...”

The fierce Minotaur gasped for air. He had been fighting for two hours, having killed at least dozens of imperial soldiers.

As the Minotaur panted, he suddenly felt a chill at his back and immediately turned to look.

Clang!

The Minotaur only saw a flash of light before everything returned to normal. An imperial soldier holding a long knife glanced at him, then turned and walked away.

”Huh?”

Surprisingly, the Minotaur found that the imperial soldiers surrounding him had dispersed, seemingly no longer paying him any attention.

”Did I... scare them away?”

Just as the Minotaur was puzzled, he heard the sound of dripping water.

Drip, drip...

Red liquid seeped from the Minotaur’s chest. Instinctively lowering his head, the motion caused his upper body to fall to the ground.

With the world spinning around him, the Minotaur’s upper half fell to the ground, and he saw a somewhat familiar body standing beside him. That body was severed at the chest and stood for a moment before collapsing.

”So, I’m going to die.”

The anguish from being slashed across the chest surged over him. The enemy’s blade was so swift, he hadn’t realized he’d been cut until now.

The Minotaur lay on the ground awaiting death, watching as an imperial soldier ran past. He didn’t care, as faces of his kin flashed in his mind.

Suddenly, as he was about to die, the Minotaur thought of whether his kin would face the same agony.

With this thought, he propped his body up with his hands, crawling forward. After crawling half a meter, he lunged forward, biting down on an imperial soldier’s leg, refusing to let go even as sharp weapons hacked at him.

Such is the cruelty of war; no one shows mercy because the enemy has a family.

After taking out the Minotaur, Su Xiao approached a few Beastmen, knife in hand.

Buzz~

A whirring sound came, reminiscent of bees flying by in summer.

Su Xiao looked toward the source and indeed saw over a dozen ’bees’, or more precisely, mechanical bees.

These mechanical bees were the same size as ordinary bees, with thin wings and compound eyes emitting a red light. Each abdomen contained a peanut-sized, cylindrical glass vial filled with orange-yellow liquid.

Seeing these bees, Su Xiao instinctively thought of enemy contractors and bombs. He immediately retreated.

Buzz~

The mechanical bees accelerated toward Su Xiao, their legs spouting flames like tiny missiles.

Before these mechanical bees could get close, Su Xiao felt nothing unusual, as if they were harmless ordinary bees.

Su Xiao leaped back, rapidly forming an energy shield in front of him. Disengaging the energy connection, he pushed the shield forward, colliding with the mechanical bees.

Boom, boom, boom...

The deafening explosions created a blast zone over a dozen meters wide, caused by these relatively small bees. The 50-strength energy shield was instantly shattered.

A strong gust blew by as Su Xiao landed, the hem of his windbreaker billowing.

With the left hand wrapped in a metal armguard shielding his eyes, Su Xiao scanned the front through his fingers, searching for any suspicious enemies.

Beep, beep, beep...

A rapid tremor came from beneath Su Xiao’s feet, prompting him to instinctively jump.

Ding.

An iron rod burst from the ground, with a sphere at its tip, emanating pulses of energy outward.

Huff, huff...

The pulse spread, causing Su Xiao’s nearby counter shield to gather into a circle, protecting him inside.

Bang, bang, dozens of nearby imperial soldiers’ heads exploded, scattering brains like smashed watermelons.

Not just imperial soldiers; tribal soldiers nearby also had their heads blown open under the force of the pulse.
