Chapter 1249: Chapter 1248: Hidden Motives

Under the guidance of the Priest, Fang Zheng walked through the dark passageway and arrived at the hall of the Dark Elves, meeting the Matriarch of the First Family, the highest ruler of this city—Matriarch Coresa.

This Dark Elf was already quite old, of course, Elves themselves have relatively long lifespans, generally speaking, even an Elf living to be a hundred or eighty would still look like a minor. However, the wrinkles at the corners of this Dark Elf’s eyes and forehead were visible, and her silver-white hair showed signs of withering and yellowing... This was enough to show that this Dark Elf’s age far exceeded others, at least over 600 years old.

Fang Zheng raised his head, with hands behind his back, squinted his eyes, gazing at Matriarch Coresa, while Coresa sat on a silver-white spider-shaped chair, slightly lowering her head, watching him. Seeing this scene, the Priests around them slightly changed their expressions, then one of the Priests signaled to a guard nearby, and subsequently, a Dark Elf guard angrily drew his Longsword.

”How dare you, who allowed you to dare make eye contact with Matriarch Coresa!”

Before the words finished, the Rapier in the Dark Elf guard’s hand whistled out, mixed with sharp Sword Qi, stabbing towards Fang Zheng in front of him. His attack moved as swift as a released rabbit, nimble and lively like lightning. If Fang Zheng had no reaction, then under this strike, he would at least end up half-paralyzed.

However, this held no meaning for Fang Zheng.

In his eyes, everything before him seemed to slow down, as if someone started to play the scene in slow motion. Fang Zheng could even clearly see the white strands of hair of the Dark Elf guard floating upwards, his right hand holding the Longsword, slightly rotating half a circle for better exertion. Accompanying his action, the pitch black blade began to flash with dazzling Thunder light.

The Dark Elf guard leapt forward, and his Longsword in hand thus pierced towards Fang Zheng’s chest, entailed with Thunder.

Then... stopped in mid-air.

”Sigh...”

Looking at the scene in front of him as if it were a poster, Fang Zheng helplessly sighed.

Why wasn’t it the God of Time and Space that awoke within me back then? Just looking at this scene, I should have enough qualifications to contend for the position of the God of Time and Space, right...

While feeling depressed and lamenting, Fang Zheng extended the fingers of his right hand, lightly flicking the sword tip.

At that moment, time began to resume its flow.

”Boom!!”

No one noticed what had happened, everyone merely saw the Dark Elf guard launch an attack on Fang Zheng, and then immediately after he just leapt up, it was as though being slapped away by something, violently crashing against the wall not far off. The Longsword in his hand broke into pieces, subsequently the bones within the Dark Elf guard’s body also emitted a similarly crisp breaking sound. Accompanied by a wail and scream, in the next moment the Dark Elf Attendant collapsed limply to the ground, no longer making a sound.

”Crash!!”

At this moment, all other Dark Elves drew weapons, aiming at Fang Zheng. According to Dark Elf rules, performing such an action in front of the Matriarch counted as a declaration of war!

However, just when the Dark Elves planned to rush up to subdue this human, they saw Matriarch Coresa slowly raise her hand, signaling them not to act. Seeing Matriarch Coresa’s gesture, although somewhat bewildered, these Dark Elves obediently put down their weapons.

”Alright, what do you seek me for?”

Fang Zheng did not intend to exchange pleasantries with an old woman nearing her end. While respecting the elderly and cherishing the young is indeed a traditional virtue, it also depends on who it is.

”Amusing, male.”

In face of Fang Zheng’s inquiry, Matriarch Coresa chuckled.

”After hearing of your existence from my daughter, I originally planned to make you my Attendant Father.”

Hehehe, an elderly woman who appeared as though in her fifties or sixties still seeking a lover.

If you weren’t this old, weren’t this dark, perhaps I might have reluctantly considered.

”However, your display just now was beyond my expectations.”

Matriarch Coresa did not give Fang Zheng a chance to speak and, like all elderly people, she lowered her eyes, continued speaking on her own.

”You killed the Martial Arts Master of the First Family, by rights, I should have sentenced you to death. But now, I have changed my mind... After all, you have exhibited your strength, and I am willing to pay some price for it. From today onwards, I want you to become the Martial Arts Master of our First Family, are you willing to accept?”

”Mother?!”

Hearing Matriarch Coresa’s words, her daughters standing by her side were taken aback, and the other Dark Elves could not conceal their inner astonishment. The position of Martial Arts Master is the highest status a male in a Dark Elf family can attain, much like the head of the guards in the Royal Palace, and this position has almost always been held by a Dark Elf. Yet now, Matriarch Coresa actually wanted to hand this position over to an outsider!

Moreover, a human!

”What benefit does this have for me?”

Fang Zheng raised an eyebrow, showing no interest in Matriarch Coresa’s recruitment.

”I am merely an adventurer passing through this city by chance, I do not plan to stay here long, nor do I have any interest in Dark Elves.”

”Outrageous!”

”Insolent!”

”You dare speak to Matriarch Coresa like that!!”

Upon hearing Fang Zheng’s answer, the surrounding Dark Elves roared once more, however, with the precedent set by the Martial Arts Master, none of them dared to make a move against Fang Zheng—otherwise, who knows if they themselves might become the next unlucky one.

”Then, I shall present it in another manner.”

Matriarch Coresa still did not react in the slightest; she seemed like a good-humored elder, smilingly watching Fang Zheng.

”Since you are adventurers, I can hire you then.”

Hearing this, Fang Zheng pondered for a moment, then nodded.

”Of course, no problem.”

”Very good.”

Upon hearing Fang Zheng’s reply, Matriarch Coresa once again revealed a satisfied smile.

”I wish to hire you to do something for me... In fact, recently we have investigated information that several families are plotting against us.”

At this point, Matriarch Coresa’s expression became somewhat stern.

”Their overconfident actions will not succeed, yet we are unwilling to take risks, thus I hope you can aid us. Indeed... The First Family will have an operation soon, you don’t need to know the specifics, you just need to know we hire you to ensure this operation isn’t disrupted or threatened by any external factors.”

Upon hearing Matriarch Coresa’s words, Fang Zheng pondered again for a moment, then posed a question.

”Then, what do I gain?”

”Money, wealth, equipment — everything you desire we can provide. Additionally, you will receive the Family Crest of the First Family, which allows you to roam this city unimpeded, without any Dark Elf daring to give you trouble. Should they act against you, it would be tantamount to opposing the First Family!”

”I request to receive payment first.”

Fang Zheng unabashedly made a demand that made the surrounding Dark Elves nearly wish to leap forward and strangle him, yet Matriarch Coresa nodded nevertheless.

”No problem.”

”Alright, then it’s a deal.”

After another brief conversation, Fang Zheng turned to leave, only after he exited the hall, did a tall Dark Elf Priest emerge, respectfully bowing to Coresa.

”Matriarch Master, we don’t need to do this at all, it is truly...”

”I have my own arrangements.”

However, before she could finish, Coresa coldly interrupted, at that moment, the eyes of the aged Dark Elf shone with an eerie, icy Radiance.

”Remember the Goddess’s oracle, which is most important, and... he’s just a human, he doesn’t even understand...”

Stopping at this point, the corners of Coresa’s mouth curved slightly upwards.

”From the moment he entered here, he could never leave again.”
