Chapter 357: Chapter 356: Not Everyone Needs to Be Saved

“What, what just happened?”

Since the clash between the two parties was only a blink of an eye, most people had not fully reacted to what had occurred by the time Fang Zheng sheathed his sword. It was only after the figure had quietly withdrawn that the others came to their senses. What they saw, however, was only the blood scattered on the ground and the greatsword in Fang Zheng’s hand that he had swung out unknowingly.

“As expected, there’s something wrong with this box.”

Fang Zheng glanced in the direction where the shadow had vanished and then looked towards Nymph, who silently shook her head. They knew very well that their sensory abilities were the strongest among the group. Nymph’s all-frequency radar was on 24 hours a day, while Fang Zheng’s spacetime perception could even foresee events. Despite this, they hadn’t noticed someone lurking nearby; it was as if that shadow had spontaneously appeared out of nowhere, and now… it had vanished into thin air again.

But that one strike had been enough to inflict damage.

Fang Zheng retracted the Vampire Greatsword. He was becoming more fond of the greatsword’s properties—the guarantee of inflicting damage as long as it hit its target. Although Fang Zheng hadn’t used all his strength in the hurried moment, he believed that the strike had been forceful enough for the opponent to endure. After all, assassins and thieves are typically vulnerable targets, and if it were not for the Vampire Greatsword’s property of “damage” instead of “lethal,” that strike might have been fatal.

“Okay, hand over the box to me now.”

“Ah, please take it!”

Hearing Fang Zheng speak, Huck trembled all over, quickly handing over the box. If he still had any doubts deep within him before, now Huck was not at all willing to keep the thing in his hands any longer. He was quite aware that the shadow had come specifically for the box and that the opponent was incredibly strong, so much so that he couldn’t detect them at all. If the lurker had intended to kill them, they would probably have ended up corpses before they could react.

After taking the box from Huck, Fang Zheng weighed it for a moment, then turned his hand and stored it away in his own space.

“All right, let’s go down the mountain.”

The sudden attack had made everyone on edge again. After all, they were practically out of resources now. Except for Katie, who still had some magic artifacts for self-preservation, Fina, Hailien, and the Astrologer were nearly too exhausted to fight anymore. Moreover, Huck’s group, who had been battling creatures, were also heavily injured. A phantom assassin posed an enormous threat to them all.

Perhaps due to the Vampire Greatsword’s counter-damage effect, no one attacked them again as they descended. It seemed the assailant had also not escaped unscathed from their injuries, but… not all were glad tidings.

“How could this happen!”

Looking at the camp emanating black smoke in front of them, Huck and Bolt were shocked and dismayed. Only when the group came down the mountain did they discover that their camp at the foot of the mountain had been completely destroyed!

“This is impossible; we had repelled the monsters’ assault before climbing up!”

Looking at the remnants of the campsite, Huck’s face turned ashen, and the others appeared confused and helpless. After all, too many unexpected events had occurred along the way, and they were a bit overwhelmed.

Who attacked the campsite?

This question was soon answered.

“It was the Dark Elves.”

Molly stepped forward, carefully examining the debris and then reached out to pull a crossbow arrow from a plank.

“This is a Dark Elf crossbow arrow; only they use such things here.”

“Report!”

Just then, the mercenary dispatched by Huck to check the situation ran back, breathless.

“Everyone in the camp has been killed, Miss Ellie is missing, only this note was left behind…”

“What?”

Hearing this, Huck hurriedly took the note and read it thoroughly, then frowned.

“This complicates matters, they’ve kidnapped Miss Ellie, demanding we exchange her for this box!”

“Miss Ellie?”

“Err…”

Faced with Fang Zheng’s curious inquiry, Hucks momentarily showed a somewhat embarrassed expression, but he quickly gave a response.

“Master, you should still remember, it was that person before…”

At this point, he gestured with his hand, and Fang Zheng, seeing his gesture, immediately understood what he meant.

“Are you talking about Lady Meat Mountain?”

“Err… yes…”

“And she dares to call herself Ellie?”

“…”

This time, Hucks didn’t answer, but from his expression, it was clear that deep down, he thoroughly agreed with Fang Zheng’s ridicule. But what could be done? He hadn’t chosen the name.

“… What should we do about this …”

“Just pretend we didn’t see it.”

Glancing around, Fang Zheng casually took the note and quickly, a flame emerged from his hand, turning the note to ash. Seeing this scene, Hucks’s expression also changed several times.

“But, but…”

“They specified that we need to go to the Dark Region for the trade. Do you really think we should go?”

Fang Zheng disdainfully glanced at Hucks.

“The Dark Region is not a place we can just meddle in, even dwarves don’t like to approach it lightly. Moreover, what they want us to hand over is a Necromancer Item. Who knows what they intend to do with that thing? What if they plan to create an army of the dead to attack the surface? Not to mention…”

While speaking, Fang Zheng pointed to some young girls in the distance, then looked at Hucks again.

“Do you think a normal man would make such a choice?”

“…”

Well, from a man’s perspective, Hucks had nothing to say. That kind of woman… no, calling that thing a woman was an insult to all women! He himself wouldn’t make such a foolish choice!

“For justice and peace, sacrifices are sometimes necessary.”

Watching Hucks’s complex expression, Fang Zheng reached out and patted his shoulder. freeweɓnovēl.coɱ

“We will never forget Miss Ellie’s decision to make a self-sacrifice for the peace of the surface. The Goddess will bless her soul and grant her eternal rest… Any problem with that?”

“… No, none.”

What more could Hucks say at this point?

He was also desperate!

But just as Fang Zheng had said, for the sake of an Ellie, going to the Dark Region was clearly a pipe dream; they would not make such foolish decisions. Although the young lady’s family held a significant position in the Land of Wealth, the matter itself was blameless, not to mention that all decisions were made by the Grand Knight… At the end of the day, the blame wouldn’t fall on him.

Thinking this, Hucks immediately felt more relaxed.

Indeed, just as the Grand Knight had said, let Miss Ellie sacrifice herself for justice and peace!
