System Came When the Doctor was Thirty

Chen Chaocao loves to joke, and he cleverly weaves his professional knowledge into his jokes with exceptional skill.

Upon leaving, Dai Linfang fell silent.

After giving it some thought, he said, ”This Director Chen is quite impressive.”

Dou Kongyue replied, ”Chen Chaocao is the deputy director of the Anesthesiology Department. He previously went to Shanghai’s Jiaotong University affiliated hospital for further studies, specializing in pediatric anesthesia and complex case anesthesia.”

”His skills are excellent, and he’s humorous too.”

”Almost on par with Director Lu.”

Lu Cheng shook his head, ”Director Dou, I know I can’t compare to Director Chen.”

Dou Kongyue laughed, ”Your skills are just as polished, and your appearance is even more so. Your jokes aren’t as cheeky, so you’re definitely close.”

”By the way, Director Lu, what are you having for dinner?”

”There’s a grilled fish place I think is really good.”

Hearing about grilled fish, Dai Linfang suddenly said, ”Director Dou, Director Lu, I might not be able to join you for dinner today.”

”I have something important to do.”

”What? Didn’t we agree I’d make the arrangements?” Dou Kongyue was momentarily surprised.

”It’s urgent.” Dai Linfang was the first to rush out.

Lu Cheng watched Dai Linfang’s departure, finding him both endearing and amusing. This is a man whose brain is under the control of love hormones.

”Director Lu, shall just the two of us go?” Dou Kongyue asked again.

Lu Cheng, upon hearing this, also shook his head, ”Director Dou, I think I’ll head home too. It’s indeed getting late today. I’ve got the duty shift tomorrow.”

”How about we reschedule?”

”By the way, that debridement step in the limb salvage surgery, Brother Dai didn’t grasp it well. Actually, Director Dou, you could directly start learning the basics.”

”He was in general surgery before, so there’s a natural disdain chain towards our orthopedics, which wasn’t clearly explained.”

Dou Kongyue, as an associate chief physician, had a debridement skill level at the specialized level and continually aiming for expert level.

This level of debridement skill might not yet be enough to perform as the main surgeon for limb salvage surgery, but it’s sufficient for participating in debridement study.

”But Director Dou, starting to learn and independently leading surgery are two different things, and debridement’s basic skills can’t be neglected.”

”That level must be reached.” Lu Cheng spoke very formally.

And it must be precisely expressed to avoid misunderstanding by Dou Kongyue, who might end up feeling he’d led someone astray.

”Of course, Director Lu, these standards surely aren’t set by you to be harsh on me.”

Dou Kongyue’s expression showed difficulty, ”Are you really not going out to eat some more, Director Lu?”

”Not eating!~”

”Let’s meet another day.” Lu Cheng nodded and headed to the locker room.

Dou Kongyue thought for a moment and eventually followed, asking Lu Cheng about some other specific details.

...

When Lu Cheng got home, it was already midnight.

The limb salvage surgery just now lasted from barely past noon to eleven in the evening, nearly ten hours!

However, Mu Nanshu wasn’t sleeping at that time. Instead, she was carefully typing on her laptop.

Upon hearing Lu Cheng open the door, she quickly stood up and replied, ”Come quickly, I’ve done my best.”

”But the message you sent to that Professor Lu had too much impact; he’s been pestering a lot.”

Lu Cheng couldn’t attend to messages while in surgery.

Lu Cheng’s computer at home was logged into WeChat.

When Mu Nanshu got back, she kept hearing video call notifications. After she proactively hung up, Professor Lu started chatting with ”Lu Cheng.”

Lu Cheng, after changing into slippers, walked forward, ”Are you imitating my style again?”

On hearing Lu Cheng say ”again,” Mu Nanshu got slightly nervous, ”How did you know?”

It had been a long time since she mimicked Lu Cheng’s style while chatting.

That was a ’silly thing’ she only did in college!

”I later met that senior; I’m not blaming you. I told you, I know about the silly thing you did.”

As Lu Cheng moved closer, he clicked the mouse to redial the call.

The sound of dialing echoed.

Professor Lu’s voice came through, ”What are you doing, kid? Why are you only getting off work so late? Are you trying to worry me to death?”

Professor Lu Mang no longer had his previously calm demeanor when speaking with Lu Cheng.

Lu Cheng replied, ”Professor Lu, it started at 1 PM, and we just finished not long ago.”

”Besides, I didn’t know you’d see the message I sent you today.”

Lu Cheng’s email was sent two days ago.

But Professor Lu Mang was busy and didn’t always have time to check his inbox. He also didn’t make Lu Cheng a special contact for priority responses.

”If I had known you were such a freak, I would have flown over to tie you down myself.”

”Lu Cheng, are you playing hide and seek with me?”

”Got the task in February, and it’s not even May yet. I’m waiting for your rice seedlings, and you’ve already harvested the rice without even letting me smell it first?” Professor Lu Mang’s words were quite harsh.

Lu Cheng quickly said, ”Professor Lu, please ease up; my wife’s here.”

Earlier this year, after the break, Professor Lu Mang contacted Lu Cheng saying a German team had initiated research into liver preservation surgery.

Professor Lu Mang had recommended Lu Cheng to participate in this research.

Lu Cheng was clever, while others were still organizing the transplanting rice seedlings competition, Lu Cheng had already won the race.

How long has it been?

After returning from Kyoto, Lu Cheng had secretly been discussing the liver preservation surgical technique with Chen Song without reporting it.

”Professor Lu, I was worried I was being too eager for success, making you unhappy.”

”Even though I postponed, you’re still so agitated.”

”Had I been earlier, I feared you’d misunderstand me.”

”Recently, I’ve been collaborating with Professor Chen at Xiangya Second Hospital, considering the feasibility of the technique and the liver preservation surgical procedure.”

”We didn’t know about the research progress in other countries, so we quietly moved forward until everything made sense.”

”Only then could I report to you immediately!~”

Lu Cheng’s explanation was logical and well-founded.

The task you gave me was to be a running mate; seeing my aptitude, you wanted me to gain some experience.

As a result, before the race formally began, Lu Cheng blew up the stadium and arrested the judges.

Would you think Lu Cheng’s story was exaggerated?

It’s always most convincing to speak with concrete results!

”This quiet work is great!~” Professor Lu Mang let out a long sigh of relief.

”I called because I wanted to hear from you personally to prevent any misunderstanding that your account was compromised, or you used other teams’ footage to show me a sob story.”

”Although this possibility is low, to avoid false alarms, it needs confirmation.”

”Good then.”

”Good job, kid.” At this moment, Professor Lu Mang sounded particularly gratified.

”Professor Lu, how should I proceed now?”

”I’ve never hosted or participated in a non-proposal project like this before. I still need your guidance.”

There are two types of projects.

One type is the proposed ones documented in city, provincial, or national project tenders.

The other type isn’t proposed, like the one Lu Cheng is now involved in, which is exploratory.

Or it’s a confidential project.

They’re not proposed.

”What to do? I don’t know either now; I need to ask.”

”This surgical technique development isn’t our strong suit; not many have accomplished such feats. We need to consult too.”

”But don’t worry, since you’ve already figured out the method, the funding can come first and be adjusted later.”

”Liver preservation surgery not only concerns individual patients’ health factors but also influences the basic health factors of the population.”

”If it can be integrated with medical devices, it’s an innovative economic driver with added economic benefits.”

”It’s a topic worth thoroughly researching and exploring.” Professor Lu Mang’s emotions were particularly excited.

Lu Cheng glanced at Mu Nanshu; a flicker of emotion quickly vanished, turning into the most serene smile on his face, ”Professor Lu, since that’s the case, I’m relieved.”

”Why don’t you rest first? It’s indeed late. I have duty at the trauma center tomorrow.”

”Alright, the following matters can progress slowly.”

”We’re already ahead; there’s no need to rush. If you are only keeping pace with others, then urgency is needed.”

”Yes, slowly.” Professor Lu Mang repeated.
