System Came When the Doctor was Thirty

Wu Xiang then turned his head to introduce Lu Cheng to Zhu Guanghong and others: ”This is Director Lu from the Trauma Center. It surely wouldn’t be an exaggeration to describe him as a young and promising talent?”

Zhu Guanghong is the Administrative Director of Trauma Surgery, holding the position of Associate Chief Physician, while Liu Jun is the Administrative Director of Hand Surgery, holding the Chief Physician position.

Nodding while shaking hands with Lu Cheng, they briefly introduced themselves.

After the brief introduction, Wu Xiang added: ”Director Lu, please sit down. Can you assist in reviewing the case report prepared by the department? If there are still gaps, we’ll conduct a final check.”

”After all, inviting professors from a higher-level hospital to tackle difficulties requires the utmost attention in basic reporting and presentation.”

Opening the PPT was Deputy Chief Physician Xiang Dahong from the Hand Surgery department. He was dressed in a white coat, with a deep crimson tie adhering closely to his chest. Although internally moved, he smiled like the spring breeze and spoke warmly: ”Director Lu, would you like me to read it through once?”

No matter the setbacks experienced due to Lu Cheng for his prior outreach work, as of now, Lu Cheng had slightly surpassed him.

Whether in position or skill at hand, one must recognize Lu Cheng’s expertise as a specialized hand surgeon.

”Director Xiang, no need, no need. If my semi-nearsighted eyesight can spot shortcomings in your meticulously prepared material, that would indeed be a rare event.”

”The fact that this surgery can commence, and you, Director Wu and Director Liu, and Director Xiang are tolerant of my rashness is quite supportive indeed. My role today is to learn,” replied Lu Cheng courteously.

Wu Xiang’s politeness was not taken literally by Lu Cheng.

Neither was Lu Cheng’s politeness taken seriously by Xiang Dahong. He read word by word, giving Lu Cheng ten seconds to review before moving to the next slide.

If the hospital’s initiative to establish a Trauma Center represents a major issue at the hospital level, then the standardization of the orthopedic treatment for Destruction Injury Limb Preservation Surgery is indeed a significant departmental task at the Xiangzhou People’s Hospital.

Though this task was unexpected, with such a major opportunity presented, there’s no reason not to seize it.

The case presentation was not the focus but necessary protocol, taking only six to seven pages and finishing quickly.

Wu Xiang asked, ”Director Lu, how is it?”

”Director Wu, perhaps you should call me Xiao Lu. How could I truly deserve the title of director? If Professor Ding hears, he might find it amusing,” Lu Cheng explained, nodding, ”I think it’s all excellent. If I were to write it myself, I might not be able to write it so formally.”

Lu Cheng’s eyes and attitude were sincere.

Lu Cheng certainly wouldn’t write it so formally, but if he were to invite a higher-level hospital’s professor to evaluate the surgery quality, it wouldn’t be up to him to write the case report. Instead, Dai Linfang would write, and Mu Nanshu would handle locating supporting evidence from literature...

Wu Xiang was about to respond when his phone rang. He quickly looked at it and stood up: ”Professor Ding is already in the elevator. Let’s go greet him at the entrance.”

If Wu Xiang is a veteran and authority in Xiangzhou trauma surgery, then Professor Ding Gong is recognized as a veteran and authority in Xiang Province.

Professor Ding wasn’t that old, just over fifty, slightly overweight with a slightly chubby face, about one and a half meters tall, his smile particularly hearty and adorable.

He smiled and nodded: ”Good, good, everyone is doing well. Let’s get started. I have two surgeries scheduled at Huai City Central Hospital!”

Professor Ding Gong from Xiangya Second Hospital was invited by Director Wu Xiang to ”inspect” Ji City, conveniently scheduling two surgeries next door in Huai City.

If Professor Ding Gong were willing to perform surgery regularly, he might very well be overwhelmed.

Professor Ding Gong just casually listened for a bit to the case presentation before standing up: ”The basic pre-operative and post-operative conditions are satisfactory, and the contents of intra-operative photos and videos are quite comprehensive.”

”Based on this morning’s recording of foot skin coloration, the core operation of Limb Preservation Surgery was successfully completed.”

”If in future surgeries of this kind, there is spare capacity, it’s advisable to make preemptive preparations for Functional Reconstruction Surgery while conducting Limb Preservation Surgery.”

”Let’s go see the patient first...”

The group hurriedly followed Professor Ding Gong to the bedside.

Professor Ding Gong put on examination gloves on his hands, then crouched down courteously to indicate and observe with his index fingers.

”The difficulty of Destruction Injury Limb Preservation Surgery mainly lies in the reconstruction of blood supply to the most distal end, like whether the nourishing vessels of the skin are unobstructed!”

”Failing proper reconstruction, the skin may quickly turn purple, then black, or pale and decay, possibly leading to necrosis.”

”Next, attention needs to be on the fullness of the tissue.”

”If subcutaneous tissue like fat, muscle, and tendon circulation isn’t reconstructed properly, post a few days’ duration, they’d undoubtedly undergo necrosis and liquefaction!~”

”At this point, the skin may collapse, or during palpation, there could be a liquid wave sensation.”

”Especially thick fat accumulation areas, like the sole and the middle third of the dorsum...”

”Fortunately, it appears there is no major issue here.”

”Third, pay attention to the reconstruction of bone nourishment circulation. This is relatively non-intuitive, necessitating long-term follow-up.”

”Even in cases of bone necrosis later manifesting local pain symptoms, solutions and treatments are available, better than outright amputation.”

”Following successful functional testing, attention must be paid to local sensation really.”

”This patient, according to my tactile examination, experiences a loss of sensory function in various regions.”

”It would require further Functional Reconstruction tailored to restore sensory abilities and partial fine movements...”

After a meticulous round of checks, Professor Ding Gong stood up, noting: ”The tendon suturing in this patient’s Limb Preservation Surgery is quite well done, who is responsible for it?”

Professor Ding Gong instinctively glanced at Wu Xiang and others.

However, Wu Xiang and others instinctively turned their attention to Lu Cheng.

Professor Ding Gong then shifted his attention to Lu Cheng, recalling for a moment before smiling: ”Oh, it’s you, that makes sense.”

”Currently, within our team performing Limb Preservation Surgery, we hardly manage to restore the plumpness of soft tissues, often leading to local scar-like repair.”

Upon hearing this, patient Xu Ran’s tense expression shifted, a smile reappearing on her face, ”Professor Ding, is the quality of my surgery considered good then?”

Professor Ding nodded, smiling: ”In terms of surgical quality and aesthetic perspective, looking at hospitals nationwide capable of Limb Preservation Surgery, yours can be considered high quality.”

”Such soft tissue reconstruction, facing Limb Preservation Surgery, isn’t considered crucial, often leading individuals post-surgery to have limbs smaller than the healthy side, with skin exhibiting tight scarring.”

”Alternatively, skin may bulge outward unnaturally, bringing a certain level of aesthetic and functional impact.”

”I even think about bringing this doctor to join our hospital team, specifically for beauty-focused Limb Preservation Surgery for folks like you,” Professor Ding ended his comment.

After reviewing the CT and imaging results, he confirmed: ”Limb Preservation Surgery is sound, post-operative decisions regarding Functional Reconstruction Surgery depend on personal preference.”

Patient Xu Ran felt a sense of relief, thanking everyone in sequence.

Professor Ding Gong and his cohort proceeded to leave the ward.

Following a short walk, Professor Ding Gong suddenly turned towards Lu Cheng: ”Dr. Lu, are you considering my offer just now?”

”Join our hospital.”

Lu Cheng, caught off guard, expressed surprise, his expression slightly stiffened.

Professor Ding was aware that his invitation to Lu Cheng at this moment was a case of missing the opportune moment, and he began to remove his white coat.

”The surgery quality of this patient is unquestionable, the plumpness achieved in soft tissue reconstruction is top-notch, without particular aspects needing attention.”

”Additional points that might require consideration can’t be covered all at once. I have two surgeries in Huai City, so for now, farewell Director Wu,” remarked Professor Ding, exhibiting both amiability and impatience, quickly preparing to depart.

Director Wu Xiang’s expression altered, promptly following suit: ”Professor Ding, could you spare a little more time?”

”Urgency, urgency, upon completion, I’m headed back to Sha City; April is already here, and several underperforming students under my supervision are graduating soon, giving me quite a headache lately.”

Professor Ding waved his hand persistently, shaking his head, warmly resembling the friendly neighborly uncle, possessing no hint of pretentiousness.

Wu Xiang exchanged a knowing glance with Vice Director Zhu Guanghong and Hand Surgery’s Liu Jun, each leading their teams back.

Lu Cheng, accompanied by Wu Xiang, personally escorted Professor Ding Gong into the elevator.
