High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 1645: Chapter 389: The Prisoners’ Songs

”We are shells!

Let the wizards be terrified!

Walking through hell,

Soundly asleep.

Beneath our feet is a raging fire,

Fear and greed always accompany us,

No one dares to look! No one dares to look!

We are the candles of the Black Prison!

Never extinguished!

Defeat me! Defeat me!

Even death cannot defeat me!”

Accompanied by the pitch-black ’shells’ falling from the sky, amidst the emaciated prisoners over the Hell Equation, this hoarse and low singing gradually echoed.

Sea demons, Witch Demons, Bug Monsters, Beast Monsters, Bird Demons, etc., regardless of their identities outside the prison, in the Black Prison, they have only one name - prisoners.

Falling into demons is for survival, living ignobly in the Black Prison is for survival.

Rising up in rebellion is also for survival.

Rather than turning to dust after the oil is exhausted and the lamp goes out, or becoming someone else’s firewood to survive, it is better to seize the moment when someone raises the arm in defiance, to bravely shout out the demons in their hearts, and to live towards death.

At first, the singing was scattered and timid.

”...Beneath our feet is a raging fire,

Fear and greed always accompany us,

No one dares to look! No one dares to look!”

The Dog Demon, hunched over, hung its head as if it wanted to tuck its mouth into its chest, yet its eyes struggled to look upward, and that trace of demon’s scarlet shimmered slightly amidst the bubbling, broken lava bubbles in the surrounding trenches.

Gradually, the singing spread.

The stumbling skeletons dismantled their own ribs, striking their bald skulls; the twirling Bird Demons flapped their wings, which were almost featherless, creating a crisp sound like a sword clashing; kneeling bugs farted forcefully, stealthy spiders plucked at the strings of their freshly woven webs, and the slowly moving War Elephants shook their heads, waving the eighteen tentacles at the corners of their mouths, slapping their cheeks intensely.

Ting, ting, ting, ting, dong, dong, dong, pop!

The invisible air machine linked with the song, connecting all the prisoners’ emotions, their different experiences simmering together in the similar environment, exuding a strange mix of resentment and hope:

”...We are the candles of the Black Prison!

Never extinguished!

Defeat me! Defeat me!

Even death cannot defeat me!”

...

...

Outside the Black Prison Castle.

The tens of thousands of sky lanterns floating in mid-air were shattered by the parasitic shell projectiles falling from the sky, and even those not destroyed were blown apart by a strange wind from nowhere, making the white light that originally enveloped a large wasteland somewhat fragmented and dim.

This allowed the original colors of the Black Prison to once again dominate most of the sky.

Yet the lava flowing in the trenches on the ground, far from being diminished, actually increased under the drawing of the Eye of Sauron, turning the sky a more brilliant red.

In front of the outer fort.

Hundreds of hunting teams, backed by the protective array, did not passively defend against the suddenly violent prisoners and the descending insect monsters, instead, they occasionally and briefly pierced into the territory under the Hell Equation to kill highly threatening targets, and sometimes destroyed a few Eyes of Sauron, firmly keeping the flames of war outside the outer fort.

Rain-like spells rose and then fell.

On the originally desolate and silent plain before the fort, more and more corpses, shells, and ashes of demons piled up, triggering the prisoners’ greed under ferocity, as they tore apart the wizards’ summoned beasts, bit through the wizards’ spells, scurrying around, each prisoner with a bulging mouth and a belly stretched round.

This is a feast about death.

When the prisoners’ singing gradually rose, the wizards’ hunting teams began suffering casualties, with more and more teams retreating from the battlefield, falling back to the rear for rest, while others were dispatched from the rear fort to fill in the defensive line.

Supporting all this were, on the prisoners’ side, a few Great Demons and Outer Gods; on the wizards’ side, nine Big Wizards stationed at the outer fort.

The true forms of the nine Big Wizards were engulfed by the surrounding surging black and red, losing some of their solemnity and compassion, yet revealing more of an iron-blooded, solemn aura.

The Taoist still pinched the Zi Wu Formula, but the sword light slowed a bit amid the loud singing over the Hell Equation.

The scholar playing the zither pressed the strings with one hand and tapped his knee with bent fingers with the other, keeping time with the distant singing. He tilted his head, furrowing his brows slightly, with an expression both annoyed and joyful on his face.

The monk sitting in lotus posture wore a face as calm as an ancient well without waves, holding a vase, his lips moving slightly, chanting his scriptures and spells unhurriedly.

There were also a few others —

The Giant Ape lifted its eyelids, two faint rays of clear light falling on Behemoth, meeting its gaze; the Green Snake lifted its body, like a Green Vine stretching to the sky, hissing and intertwining with Eris’s roar; the Scorpion raised its tail high, the venomous sting spun in the air as if out of control, always covering the area where Shallow Jin Ryoko was.

As for the Pagoda, the Giant Coffin, and that magnificent dress, they remained largely motionless from beginning to end, as if truly dead things.

...

...

”Someone once said, singing is the oldest spell.”

”But I think this statement is not entirely correct... Dance should be added, singing and dancing are the original embryonic form of ancient spells.”

In the main fort of the Black Prison Castle, Professor Yao tilted his ear to listen to the howling drifting over the battlefield, squinting his eyes, feeling the turmoil brewing in the air, the anxiety fed back from magic power, and couldn’t help but bite into the mouthpiece in his mouth twice, as if the spicy smoke could dilute the tremor in his heart somewhat.

This kind of tremor he hadn’t felt for a long time.

Beside him, an elder wizard, with a wide turban wrapped around his head, brightened at the dean’s profound words, immediately smiled and chimed in: ”That’s exactly right...”

But before he could finish, the dean suddenly frowned, raised his hand to stop him from speaking, and then looked up. The other associate deans in the tower also collectively looked up, following the dean’s gaze.

Similar to Professor Yao.

At the same moment.

On the tower at the highest point of the outer fort, three Upper House Members of the Moon Council; on the four towers surrounding the main fort, deans and associate deans of the four colleges of the First University; on the low inner fort walls, two vice-chancellors and many senior advisors of the First University, also almost simultaneously looked up at the dark sky.

Even including the nine Big Wizards and Behemoth, Sujade, and other Great Demons in the confrontation.

All high-ranking beings held serious expressions, remaining silent.

A solemn wind blew.

Invisible pressure gushed from every corner from all directions, filling the heavens and earth, permeating every spicy breath, and every stream of hot magma.

On the battlefield, the singing of the prisoners also gradually stilled under the omnipresent pressure.

Growing sparser, more fragmented.

Even the fighting and struggling sides within the Hell Equation grew slightly distracted, with several hundred Eyes of Sauron abandoning their attacks on the outer fortress defensive formation, all flipping over to look overhead.

Until the singing completely vanished.

Then an unfamiliar roar sounded behind the clouds —

”Ong!”

”Ong ah!”

Behind the black clouds, amidst the rumbling thunder, faint, melodious roars sounded, like the voices of Kun echoing from the deep sea, or the songs of whales surging among the vast waves.

Standing at the starting point of the Hell Equation, Giant Beast Behemoth stood upright, its mane fluttering wildly, eyes wide open, unable to hide the joyful aura emanating from its body.

It howled skyward, the roar filled with delight:

”Leviathan!”
