High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 1628: Chapter 372 Unexpected Visitor

Many wizards can fly.

Whether by using flight magic, or by riding flying brooms, magic carpets, or by controlling flying swords and rare exotic beasts, the methods vary and are numerous.

But just like walking can lead to tripping, and swimming can lead to drowning, flying also carries risks.

And the risks are even greater.

In an annual accident investigation report issued by the Mage Alliance, it was mentioned that about one in every hundred wizards attempting to fly will encounter various accidents during landing. Minor ones, like spraining an ankle or bumping a knee; moderate ones, like a magic carpet catching fire or breaking a neck while riding a beast; serious ones, where a wizard might land headfirst, splattering their brains.

Among every hundred landing accidents, there will be about one or two ’special landers’, including but not limited to getting caught by a belt on a treetop, accidentally crushing a passing groundhog during landing, or falling down the chimney of a wizard’s house.

Among every hundred ’special landers’, there will be one or two ’miraculous survivors’.

For instance, Harold Dillahunt from the Crimson Hunting Team, while hunting a crow demon, had his broom malfunction and crashed into a witch demon’s barbecue, then miraculously escaped.

And the famous adventurer Frederick Crusoe, when using a flying curse to cross a canyon, lost control of his magic, accidentally fell into a spatial rift, but fortunately ended up on the other side—a new world already developed by wizards, thus fortunately finding his way back home.

Or, a large blue fish dove headfirst into a group of starving demons, the fish was so dizzy and seeing stars that the demons just stood around quietly, not daring to make a sound.

Zheng Qing felt he was witnessing a one-in-a-million miracle.

He stood at the edge of the river plain, watching the blue fish with its head stuck in the gravel flapping its fins randomly; watching hundreds of demons around, whose eyes glowed hungrily yet appeared timid; and further away, a young black mountain goat standing proudly at the edge of a pit created by ’Flowing Fire in July’.

”This must be what the books call a ’miraculous survivor’,” the young public expense student sighed sincerely.

”Miracle? It’s not really,” a somewhat familiar hoarse voice suddenly sounded in Zheng Qing’s ear, startling the young warlock:

”In the wizard’s dictionary, there are words to describe this situation, like ’Babs’s Concern’ or ’Blind Fortuna’... Of course, I prefer a more straightforward description, like ’unlucky as hell’.”

”Not unlucky at all,” Zheng Qing denied while looking in the direction of the voice: ”On the contrary, I think it’s very fortunate... being at the wrong place, at the wrong time, doing the wrong thing, yet unexpectedly not getting punished, isn’t that something to be thankful for?”

While speaking, he had looked in all directions.

But all he saw, aside from the two statue-like figures of the old witch demon and tiger demon behind him, was a crooked dead tree a little further away, and a few smooth stones under it.

Zheng Qing did not find the source of the familiar voice.

Just as he was puzzled, the somewhat hoarse voice rang out again, but this time from the direction of his feet:

”Miracle and luck are twins, turning ’miraculous survivor’ into ’fortunate survivor’ fits just as well... But that doesn’t mean it’s not unlucky... You know, only the truly unlucky ones get to deal with both miracles and luck... Truly fortunate wizards never need the word ’luck’.”

This time, Zheng Qing finally caught the source of the voice.

He looked down, a sleek-furred Black Cat, only the size of a fist, was squatting at his feet, yawning lazily, its ears flicking to and fro as if fending off some invisible nuisance.

The warlock scrutinized the cat.

The cat had a pair of eyes as clear as rubies.

After a while, until the cat finished speaking, lifted its paw to lick its fur, the young wizard was startled to step back: ”You... why are you here?!”

Saying this, he turned back to glance around, thinking he might see a warlock in a green robe with a Daoist topknot in some corner.

This cat, though smaller now, its voice when speaking, its movements when licking its fur, especially those red eyes, quickly evoked Zheng Qing’s memories.

It was indeed the shadow that was cut by Su Shijun and thrown into the laboratory, eventually broke free from the constraints of the two-dimensional world and returned to reality.

Since a shadow reflects the inner image of a wizard, this shadow eventually transformed into a cat.

During last October’s Hunting Competition, this cat had helped Zheng Qing significantly, having killed more than half of the demons in the arena. Due to its excessive danger, once the competition ended, the Black Cat was taken away by the school’s ’relevant department’ for detention—at that time it was taken away by a man with the code name ’Forty One’, wearing a green robe with a Daoist topknot.

Of course, now, Zheng Qing already knew that the reason this cat was taken away by the ’relevant department’ was likely not only because it was a ’transdimensional creature’ that broke the two-dimensional world, but also because it carried a trace of the forbidden curse’s aura from himself.

The relevant department is most sensitive to the aura of forbidden curses.

”Humph... stop looking around,”

The Black Cat took a profound breath with discontent, puffing itself up a few sizes, and its voice became a bit more resonant: ”... I came alone... phew.”

Zheng Qing blankly watched the Black Cat swell, eventually transforming from the size of a fist into the little black leopard form he was familiar with.

After a while, he hesitated, then asked, ”I think I saw you in front of the office building recently.”

”Not surprising,” the Black Cat nonchalantly lay down again, flipping its tail: ”I’m now also an official employee of the ’relevant department’, occasionally out for official duty, nothing surprising about that.”

”Forty One initially said they’d take you for safety training, didn’t mention making you work.”

The warlock vaguely felt he had incurred a loss—technically, the money his shadow earned should belong to him, right? Or perhaps, would the contract his shadow signed affect him? If the shadow is an employee of the relevant department, does that mean he is part of it as well?

He felt this was a very subtle philosophical question.

The cold wind in the Black Prison blew out the last glowing mushroom in front of Zheng Qing, dispersing his somewhat wandering gaze, and he realized that now wasn’t the right time to discuss philosophical issues.

”Did they allow you into the Black Prison?” The warlock found another layer of confusion arising in his heart, he raised an eyebrow, glanced at the two ’statues’ beside him, and asked very cautiously: ”You! ... At this time?”

Before the Black Cat could answer, the warlock then immediately thought of another more important question: ”Do they know I’m in the Black Prison?!”
