Warhammer Divine Throne

Chapter 1299: Chapter 556: Postwar Affairs (2)

Only then did Veronica nod and step back. The witch had an inexplicable confidence in Laine, and indeed, the young female noble before them, despite being only twenty-five or six, wasn’t very powerful. Neither the Legendary Peak Veronica nor the Legendary High-Tier Teresa felt any pressure from her.

”What are you?” Fiona interrupted Laine at this moment, raising her head from Mathew Bade’s corpse: ”You’re a murderer! Laine Macado! You killed my fiancé, you ruined my marriage!”

”If you say so, then so be it.” Laine was completely unconcerned with Fiona’s accusations. On the contrary, he looked at Fiona as if she were a little girl who hadn’t grown up.

At this moment, what could this girl in front of him do to him?

After this championship duel, Laine’s momentum was like roaring waves; no one in the Knight Kingdom could stop him.

Gazing at Mathew Bade’s corpse, Laine sighed deeply. He was an honorable opponent, and the duel with Mathew Bade had given Laine deeper insights into his own combat skills and experience.

”Yes, you won, you completely won. No one in this kingdom can stop you now.” Fiona spoke in a venomous tone: ”Now you have everything, you’re a duke, you’ve claimed a righteous cause. You, this murderer, you’ve won it all; you’ve finally got what you wanted, are you satisfied? Are you happy?”

”I’m left with nothing; you’ve taken everything from me. You’ve made me lose my fiancé. Do you know we were about to get married?!” Fiona stood up and screamed hysterically at Laine: ”You destroyed my happiness with your own hands, are you pleased?”

Fiona’s questioning caused Teresa and Veronica to be displeased. The two witches couldn’t imagine what perspective this female noble in front of them was using to say such things.

Didn’t she see the enormous loss this entire kingdom suffered because of Mathew Bade’s upheaval? Tens of thousands of people fell, thousands of knights died in battle. Didn’t she know this country bled too much to resist Mathew Bade?

”She wouldn’t care.” Laine shook his head, still signaling Veronica and Teresa not to act rashly: ”She can only see herself, as all refined egoists do.”

After speaking, Laine turned his gaze to Fiona, his face adorned with a calm smile: ”Dear Miss Fiona, do you find this amusing? Do you think by saying this I would feel guilty? Do you think by saying this I would sympathize with you?”

”You’re overthinking it; I almost laughed out loud, okay?” Laine said rather coldly: ”Mathew Bade deserved his death penalty. I represented the entire kingdom and the Lady in delivering a just judgment; he and his ambition descended to hell together, it’s as simple as that!”

The girl’s face froze, her cheeks changing from bright red to almost purple due to emotional turmoil: ”You... you... inhuman scum! Bastard! Beast!”

The vocabulary-challenged noble girl couldn’t curse any more.

”Are you done?” Laine squinted, sighing lowly: ”If you’re finished, the single rooms in the infirmary of the Merciful Goddess Church are adequate, sufficient for you to spend the rest of your life there.”

With that, Laine waved towards the distance, signaling two Kingdom Knights on guard to approach and take Fiona away.

Laine had never felt sympathy for Mathew Bade, nor did he ever sympathize with a traitor who willingly descended into vampirism, abandoning his humanity.

He merely acknowledged Mathew Bade, recognized his stance and goals, and acknowledged him as an opponent. The mutual respect in the championship duel equated to respecting oneself; Mathew Bade deserved the most basic respect. His life was one of revenge, a life of obsession and persistence that even moved Laine. For revenge, he was willing to give up everything, even if it meant forsaking his humanity or dying before Kulona.

Therefore, Laine gave Mathew Bade respect, and his way of respecting was to unleash all his strength, erasing this viper completely from the Mortal World and Subspace!

”No need.” Black blood flowed from Fiona’s lips: ”He’s dead, and I... I don’t want to live... you all hate me... Only Mathew Bade was truly kind to me... only him...”

The girl lay atop Mathew Bade’s corpse, as if trying to absorb the last bit of warmth, gradually becoming motionless.

Laine, Teresa, and Veronica fell silent. The Duke of Musillon watched Fiona, who died for love, and recalled all the troubles this noble girl had caused him, and how detestable she was. She was selfish, arrogant, and unreasonable.

But in the face of Mathew Bade’s death, this refined egoist chose to die for love.

Human emotions are always so unpredictable, Laine thought. Love is most selfless, yet its conditions are the most selfish.

The sky was azure blue, with fires burning beneath; by this time, all the rabble had surrendered, and the knights were clearing the battlefield. The turmoil caused by Mathew Bade had ended, and the chaos and pain he brought to the Knight Kingdom had reached a conclusion.

Brittania’s history had turned to a new page.

... I am the dividing line of historical progress ...

That evening, Laine and the others were accommodated in the Royal Palace of Kulona for recuperation.

The Lake Fairy’s Divine Chosen Champion was severely injured, with the most severe wound being a pierced lung, several broken ribs, and twice-pierced shoulder. He was therefore arranged to recover. Lake God Witch Mogiana applied medicine and bandages, then held a bowl of porridge, spoon-feeding Laine until he finished two bowls.

Mogiana evidently had more tasks at hand, leaving after feeding the porridge, while Veronica stayed by the bedside to chat with Laine.

”This room is so luxurious~” Veronica pulled a backrest chair to the bedside, speaking with interest: ”Ah, if only my Wizard Tower had rooms this luxurious.”

”Pfft, you overthink it.” Laine laughed incessantly at her words, shaking his head while reclining on soft pillows: ”This is the accumulation of over a thousand years.”

The facilities inside the room were extremely luxurious, even lavish. It was said that this was once Landuin’s exclusive room, although descendants apparently misinterpreted the true essence of the Knightly Path, solely pursuing luxury and enjoyment.

That evening, the Jialan Witch wore an Elysian Angel Dream Butterfly Orchid Dress, with a low-cut gown and high slit. She also wore a white bow tie ribbon around her neck, exuding an ethereal charm. Her long, slender legs were covered in sheer white stockings, paired with sapphire blue strappy heels. Laine couldn’t help but take another glance, vaguely seeing the lace edge of the stockings.

”Do you like it?” Veronica, of course, noticed Laine’s gaze, smiling as she leaned closer.

”Of course I do. I like whatever you wear...” Laine’s eyes gradually changed.

”Then do you want to...”

”Knock knock~” Just then, the door knocked, and Francois’s voice came from the entrance: ”Laine? Are you there? Can we come in?”

The two quickly separated, with Laine calling out: ”Please come in.”

Francois and Bohemond, the two dukes, entered one after another, and Veronica quickly stood to greet her father-in-law and the Red Dragon Duke. Francois simply nodded at the witch, while Bohemond got straight to the point: ”Laine, there’s a problem that needs your decision now.”

”What problem?” Laine knew that the appearance of the two dukes meant something serious.

”His Majesty Richard said he is ready to abdicate.” Francois took over, stroking his goatee with an elegant smile: ”He asked us to inquire if you’re prepared. If you’ve decided, the enthronement ceremony can be arranged while most of the dukes are present.”

Veronica listened with shining eyes. Her man was finally becoming a king?

Unexpectedly, Laine, after pondering for a moment, suddenly shook his head: ”No, I can’t become king now, at least not for the next two or three years. Please convey to Richard my refusal to ascend the throne now!”

The new Duke of Musillon’s face began to darken.

”The conditions for kingship are not yet complete!”
