Surviving The Fourth Calamity

Chapter 406: Chapter 205: Heritage Unbroken, Rotten Wood Cannot Be Carved

Hill said his goodbyes to Adrian abruptly.

He didn’t have much else to do, but Adrian was still busy, although he seemed to prefer chatting with Hill.

What Adrian had to do now was the most tedious task of patching things up, no wonder he wanted to slack off.

But Hill, who had just been scornfully told that no deity would want a magician like him, had no intention of being Adrian’s excuse.

Under Adrian’s reluctant gaze, Hill did not hesitate to soar into the sky and returned to Cloud House.

Choosing a white cloud that looked thick and beautiful, Hill set up his Cloud House to move with the cloud and then cheerfully activated his disguise.

He disappeared from everyone’s sight.

William, who was hosting his distinguished guests in the Lord’s Mansion, looked up.

”What are you looking at?” Holmes, with light brown hair and an indifferent face, asked from one side.

”Master Fran has left. Hill has also gone into hiding,” William said with a smile.

”That cunning old fellow, by giving things like the Magic Book to Fran in front of you, isn’t he just telling you guys not to let Fran stay here any longer?” Holmes said scornfully, ”It’s incredible to me that Fran managed to complete all the Magic Arrays himself instead of handing them over to his students.”

”Master Fran is someone who abides by the rules,” William said lightly. ”He wouldn’t change his style for anyone.”

”Draculus actually has a legacy in Saral,” sighed Holmes. ”Luckily, it’s the one who had a bad relationship with his teacher.”

”It seems like you really despise him,” William said, a bit puzzled. ”Isn’t he someone who doesn’t care about anything?”

”Doesn’t care about anything but wants to know everything,” Holmes sneered. ”All ears and no hands. I don’t believe for a second that he doesn’t know about the God of Nobility playing the fool or the Goddess of the Spring committing follies.”

He knows and yet doesn’t care.

The God of Nobility is better than him, at least he’s someone you can deal with.”

William knew Holmes despised the God of Nobility, often cursing him in the secret chamber of his Magic Tower.

When Saral was first established, the Noble Church tried to stretch its hand into the affair.

They almost coerced the King of Saral into becoming a follower of the God of Nobility.

The Gold Element Crystal Mines were the most valuable.

It was Holmes who led the resistance against them.

Otherwise, the Millers and others wouldn’t have fought so hard for Saral.

They would have divided the veins with the Noble Church, dooming the nascent country of Saral completely.

And at that time, it was the Mage Association that lent a hand.

They might not be committed to everything, but ensuring Legendary Mages weren’t oppressed by any deities was the foundation that the Mage Association was established on, and no one would go against it.

Because of this, Saral has always been friendly towards the Mage Association.

In Obastian, apart from the Royal Palace, the best location belongs to the Mage Association.

But any country would cultivate their own Royal Mages.

After all, the Mage Association has become, in essence, a Mage Kingdom.

Although Holmes is particularly disdainful of the Noble Church, he also always appears to dislike the peculiar practices of the Mage Association.

William knew that Holmes simply didn’t see the true nature of the world, and that was why he could not understand why those mages were so indifferent to the world.

He also always despised those Legendary Mages who knew of the Demon invasion yet never looked back, and once they left, they never returned.

But he couldn’t say much about it.

Even for deities that belong to this world, the secret engraved in the laws by the World Will cannot be revealed casually.

Although Holmes is a Legendary Mage with great strength, he is, after all, a single system law Legendary, unaware of many things.

And his nature is truly introverted; except for members of the Saral Royal Family, he doesn’t even want to talk.

For thousands of years, he’s hardly interacted with the Millers and others.

Truthfully, it’s fortunate that he’s powerful; neither Miller nor Carl can defeat him.

As for the other Legendary Mage in Obastian, he’s an existence that must not be spoken of.

William is troubled by this.

Speaking of factions, that’s truly problematic, but in terms of character, he is not worse than some of the Great Nobility.

It’s just that everything wants to be placed on his experiment table.

William felt that it would be better for that person not to encounter Hill, or they might end up fighting.

No, he recalled Hill’s temperament, and was certain they would end up fighting.

”There are reasons for some things, but we can’t talk about it,” William explained briefly.

In the future, people from the Mage Association affiliated with Draculus might often appear in this Central City, and William didn’t want Holmes to clash with them.

Although he thought it unlikely, people who are obsessed can sometimes do the unexpected.

Holmes said expressionlessly: ”I know there must be a problem now. Ever since the Undead Tribe appeared en masse, I understood that there must be big troubles in the world.

Don’t worry, I won’t leave the Magic Tower easily.

In the future, this city will not only have members of the Undead Tribe but also mages and magicians, along with the scoundrels from the Noble Church.

Just thinking about it is annoying.”

”Why are there so many fools among my cousin’s descendants? A thousand years have passed!

”I went to great lengths to make such a comfortable Magic Tower only to have to give it up temporarily for them!”

William lowered his head, though Holmes spoke of the collateral line. However, if we were to discuss it, there were even more fools on the legitimate line.

Reluctant as he was to admit it, William, who had recognized his status as the King of Saral, understood that these were his father’s brothers.

Therefore, as the King of Saral, he held Holmes in high esteem.

A Legendary Mage willing to protect Saral for a thousand years and who would continue to guard it as long as the Royal Family didn’t court death themselves.

This was an existence even the most foolish member of the Saral Royal Family had to respect.

However, William felt that if it weren’t for his own emergence, Holmes would probably not have been able to tolerate someone as foolish as Edward.

”I won’t interfere with trivial matters. Who do you plan to appoint as the City Lord?” Holmes asked indifferently. ”Don’t choose anyone from the Spencer Family. I don’t want any rumors suggesting that I recognize the Spencer Family’s right to the throne.”

”The Spencer Family isn’t that foolish,” William couldn’t help but shake his head and chuckle.

”But those fools from the Saral Family are about to marry off a Spencer miss who’s in her forties,” Holmes said with a sneer. ”Wouldn’t you prioritize a child with blood from the Spencer Family?

That’s common sense.

No wonder those Great Nobility keep whispering such things in my ear.

It is quite normal for their daughters to feel dissatisfied, now viewed as second choices.”

William smiled faintly: ”Aside from my cousin, the relationship between me and the Spencer Family is merely one of cooperation.

If they are foolish enough to put the Spencer Family and my cousin on the same level, then there is nothing I can do.

Even if it’s my cousin’s child, I wouldn’t care much about it.

Unless that child really impresses me.”

Holmes nodded: ”In some ways, you really do resemble your cousin.

Your reliance on him doesn’t come from his being a Spencer, and that’s good.

It seems although the Spencer Family supports you, it’s mainly for their own benefit.

It’s the same everywhere.

Having a relative who can support you is truly fortunate.”

He fell into reminiscence: ”Although my cousin had a bad temper, was willful and irritable, he was very kind to me. Without his great effort, providing me with abundant resources, I might never have become a Legendary Mage.

To use the terms of those people, the resources spent on me could have raised several legends.”

”Why bother remembering such foolish words,” said William disdainfully. ”Even if a few Legendary Mages were cultivated, what does that have to do with the founder of Saral?

No fool could be the founder of a nation.

It’s only natural to spend one’s money on family.

Giving it to outsiders, that would take a real idiot.”

Holmes suddenly laughed: ”From Cortez to Haifasardo, and then to Saral, all three Royal Families have had their share of fools.”

Unfazed, William said, ”Spending on a woman you like ultimately brings you joy. That’s still spending for yourself, so it doesn’t count.”

”Please!” Holmes suddenly chuckled. ”My cousin said to me before he died, ’If Saral ends up being destroyed by a woman, tell me not to bother, just leave.’

It seems the curse of Cortez’s fools began to spread in Saral.

It will only get worse over time, no point in trying to salvage it.

When I saw Edward’s follies, I thought I might have to pack up and leave.”

William, noting the fleeting sharpness on the usually impassive Holmes’ face, clearly understood that the political independence Holmes had fought for Saral was carelessly given away by that fool, Edward.

Without William’s arrival, it wouldn’t take a thousand years for Saral to bear the name Dionysio.

Just a few more alliances by marriage and the God of Nobility would have had its way.

”But speaking of which, I thought you wouldn’t come back to Saral to fight for the throne! Isn’t watching Edward and Charles destroy themselves more in line with your vengeful heart?

Now, no one will believe that Edward’s scheme ever really hurt you.”

”Indeed, everything was ready at that time, and I thought of leaving,” confessed William. ”Why wouldn’t I take the excuse given to me by Edward himself?

It was the perfect chance to point at the old man’s nose and curse him a good one.

I initially just wanted to see them both suffer heavy losses.

I had even considered the final outcome.

Edward would fail and die full of regrets. Even if Charles took power, his losses would be heavy.

But then they had to get involved with the Noble Church!

Starting from scratch and inheriting the throne each have their advantages and disadvantages.

Initially, my choice was a life of peaceful convenience, but unfortunately, they wouldn’t allow it.

It’s just a bit more trouble, something I can certainly handle.”

”So it seems fate still favors Saral,” said Holmes calmly. ”I really thought I’d have to watch this country meet its end during my lifetime!”

So a thousand years later, even though this Legendary Mage is still willing to look after Saral, he no longer possesses the will to fight desperately for it.

William could totally understand it; why would anyone go to great lengths for a bunch of fools?
