Leisurely Traveler with Check-in System

Compared to a top chief engineer, Li Younan is merely lacking some hands-on experience in the engine room.

He slowly spoke, ”Chen Tiefeng and Lin Xiaowen, stay and proceed to the next practical examination. The other two instructors, you may leave.”

Upon hearing this, both Zhao Meng and Wang Haitao displayed expressions of astonishment.

Chen Tiefeng felt a slight sense of relief in his heart.

Yet, for some reason, when facing this young man, he always felt a sense of awe.

Logically speaking, the other party is not only young but should also be an outsider. However, Li Younan gave off an impression akin to an experienced sea captain, always maintaining a gentle smile, yet his eyes seemed to perceive everything.

”Wait a minute!” At this moment, Wang Haitao spoke up.

Since he had been eliminated, a clear expression of displeasure appeared on his face, ”Teacher Li, what was wrong with my test paper?”

Meanwhile, Zhao Meng also chimed in, with a relatively more intense tone: ”Teacher Li, since I’m interviewing for this position, I certainly respect you, so I’ll address you as Teacher Li.”

”But to speak somewhat bluntly, I truly don’t believe your evaluation can assess me properly. I’ve been on the sea for over 20 years, working in the engine room for over a decade. If you think my test paper doesn’t meet the requirements, I’d really like to hear your insights.”

Chen Tiefeng and Lin Xiaowen, who passed the assessment, naturally had nothing to say, but they both looked at Li Younan.

After all, if Li Younan couldn’t convincingly address these two people, they might also be affected. Additionally, they were curious if Li Younan really understood.

In response to their questions, Li Younan smiled slightly and calmly stated: ”In that case, let me go through them one by one. First, let’s discuss Wang Haitao’s issues. Mainly, there are two problems: one is errors in technical terminology.”

He picked up the test paper, ”For instance, here, the unit description is not standardized. Industry standards require capitalization, but you’ve written it in lowercase. The naming of the convention’s regulations is incorrect, writing STCW as STC. And here, when abbreviating the anti-pollution convention, you omitted ’international.’ There are six such errors.”

Wang Haitao was momentarily stunned, his face flushing slightly: ”These... are minor issues, right?”

Li Younan replied with a serious expression: ”I don’t care how it was required on your previous vessel, but here, errors in technical terminology represent a fundamental lack of rigor.”

”In fact, your issues aren’t limited to that. The second point is errors in written expression, such as inconsistent log writing in maintenance reports. Moreover, here the cause of failure is stated, with fuel filter blockage written as fuel filter damage, which are two completely different failure concepts.”

”And you have three such errors, which indicate that your attention to detail hasn’t met my standards.”

Seeing that Li Younan pointed out these issues so rigorously and meticulously, Wang Haitao’s expression turned very unpleasant.

Li Younan continued, ”My test paper is actually based on practical scenarios. The focus of the assessment isn’t your level of technical knowledge, but your work style.”

At this point, Li Younan shifted his gaze to Zhao Meng, his expression turning even more serious.

”As for you, just now during oral communication, you mentioned that some provisions of the STCW convention can be simplified in practice, as long as port state control doesn’t detect it. To me, dismissing the mandatory and safety significance of international conventions shows a lack of respect, and frankly, I can’t trust you on my vessel.”

Retracting his gaze, Li Younan smiled and asked, ”Do either of you have any more questions?”

...

Two hours later, Chen Tiefeng and Lin Xiaowen arrived at the ship that Li Younan had specially prepared for this assessment.

Beside it was a second-hand yacht, seemingly with some years on it, approximately 40 meters in length, a medium-sized yacht.

The assessment set by Li Younan was an emergency fault diagnosis practical task. Each candidate had one hour to troubleshoot the failure, proceeding one by one.

First up was Lin Xiaowen. After she entered the engine room, the others could only wait outside.

Outside, Chen Tiefeng carefully observed the yacht, feeling somewhat anxious as this was a vessel he hadn’t encountered before.

Troubleshooting a vessel’s failure relies not only on professional ability but also significantly on familiarity with the vessel.

However, understanding the main engine, auxiliary engine, generator, boiler, and electrical systems of this vessel within just one hour is challenging, at least for Chen Tiefeng.

After nearly an hour of anxious waiting outside, Lin Xiaowen shook her head as she came out of the engine room, sighed slightly, and said: ”An hour is too tight. I only managed to check the main engine and auxiliary engine, but haven’t had a chance to check the generator and boiler.”

Li Younan remained noncommittal and simply said, ”Next is Chen Tiefeng’s turn.”

Taking a deep breath, Chen Tiefeng entered the engine room with his tools.

For an engineer, the core competency is professional technical skill, and within this competency, the two primary aspects are equipment operation and maintenance ability, and proficiency in regulations.
