Chapter 1648: Chapter 1648: Fire Scene

Bai Ruozhu jumped out of bed and shouted toward the door: ”Leave some people to guard the residence, the others prepare to follow me to rescue people. Also, send someone to notify all the members of the Female Physicians Institution to bring medical boxes and a large quantity of burn medicine to meet me at the incident site.”

Jiang Yichun’s face was ashen as he turned his head and said: ”Dress warmly, don’t catch a cold. I’ll head to the Palace first to deploy manpower. The urgent task is to save people.”

Bai Ruozhu nodded, ”Save as many as possible; those innocent civilians are pitiful. Even the people in Liu Alley, not all of them deserve to die. The Grand Princess is too indiscreet.”

”She doesn’t deserve to be a princess anymore.” Jiang Yichun said, his voice even colder. After speaking, he dared not delay any longer and strode out.

Bai Ruozhu wasn’t used to being attended to, usually dressing herself. Today, she regretted not having a maid, wishing her clothes could be put on faster.

”Right, go notify Jiu Sheng and gather all members of the Medical Alliance to save people, and comb the entire City for burn-related medicinal materials. Since you’re not familiar with medicinal materials, get Sui Ge to handle it with Jiu Sheng.” She continued giving orders.

”Yes, I’ll arrange it right away.” Jianqi responded with added vigor, grateful that his master cared so much for the people.

Jianqi went out to instruct his subordinates on the tasks, and couldn’t help but fall into contemplation.

A sea of flames appeared in his mind. He didn’t know how large the fire was, but in his young eyes, it seemed to engulf the entire river.

He cried out for his parents, and at that moment, his father rushed over, picked him up, and ran outside. He vaguely heard his mother’s cries for help behind him.

”Father, mother is still inside, save mother,” he sobbed.

His father’s face was already streaked with tears, ”I’ll take you out first, then go save your mother.”

As he spoke, they were almost at the Main Gate, just a few steps away from escaping the fire. But he felt anxious, fearing his mother couldn’t hold on. He wanted to struggle out of his father’s embrace, but having inhaled too much smoke, he was powerless.

Suddenly, there was a loud bang above him, followed by a dizzying spin, and he was harshly thrown to the ground as his father’s body pressed down on him.

He smelled burnt flesh and looked up to see a beam crushing his father’s back, with a deep wound on his father’s head bleeding profusely.

”Father, father! Wake up!” he cried, but couldn’t move.

It wasn’t until someone arrived and rescued him from under his father that he regained consciousness, desperately pleading for his parents’ rescue, but soon passed out.

When he woke up again, three days had passed, his body covered in blisters and some spots already festering, and his parents hadn’t been rescued, both perishing in the fire.

The person who saved him took him to the Commerce Association and after much pleading, someone saved his life. He then stayed in the Commerce Association, trained to become a Shadow Guard.

Since then, his throat was damaged, making his voice hoarse and speaking painful, and his demeanor became even more silent and withdrawn.

Jianqi stood still, somewhat afraid to go to the fire scene, fearing he would recall past memories. At this moment, Bai Ruozhu hurriedly came out carrying her Medical Box, saying: ”Jianqi, let’s go.”

Jianqi couldn’t hesitate any longer; despite his fear, he knew the post-fire area was incredibly dangerous, and he couldn’t leave his master.

Before Bai Ruozhu reached the front yard, she ran into her parents and others, thinking they must have received the news as well.

”Ruozhu, are you heading to the Palace?” Lin Ping’er asked.

”What’s the point of going to the Palace now? I need to rush to the fire site to rescue people,” Bai Ruozhu said.

Lin Ping’er replied: ”I’ll go with you. Though I don’t have Medical Skills, I can help bandage and bring water.”

Bai Yihong also said: ”I have strength; I can help carry the injured. We have to do something about this.”

Madam Wu hurried over from behind, ”Ruozhu, I’m coming with you. I might not have much else, but I’m skilled in martial arts, and I can surely help out with the physical tasks.”

Bai Ruozhu’s eyes were already red, ”Alright, we’ll all go. Together, we can surely save more innocent civilians.”

The group quickly moved outside, Lin Ping’er said: ”Your second brother went to the Palace, your eldest brother just went to mobilize the Medicine Merchants to deliver medicine, hoping to help you.”

Bai Ruozhu couldn’t hold back her tears, feeling proud of her parents and brothers. They’re not saviors, but as long as they do their best, they can stand with a clear conscience.

The group rushed to the fiery Qiuye Alley, commonly known as ”Liu Alley” due to the numerous Brothels there, nearby was a mixed market with many poor residents.

Residents nearby were among the poorer in the Capital City, experiencing such a disaster, some even had their homes burned, becoming homeless vagrants.

This incident occurred in what they thought was the safest Capital City, utterly unexpected by everyone, yet not manmade—it was orchestrated by the lofty Grand Princess of Danliang Country!

Soon, Bai Ruozhu and her group arrived at the fire scene, government soldiers were already conducting rescue operations, surprisingly Fan Li was present.

She always felt Fan Li was a sly old fox, trying not to offend anyone, yet scared to death. He could completely excuse himself from being present at such a dangerous fire site by going to the Palace to report.

After half an evening, the fire was extinguished, but many structures were shaky, extremely dangerous, and who knew where there might still be sparks that could reignite?

Fan Li was equally surprised to see Bai Ruozhu, noticing her carrying a Medical Box and leading a large group, he hurriedly bowed and said, ”Master Bai is here to save people, right? I thank you on behalf of the civilians.”

Bai Ruozhu raised her hand to stop his polite words, ”I’ll focus on saving lives first; we can talk later. Fan Daren, see where it’s suitable to place the wounded, many have already lost their homes.”

”Yes, I’ll have people arranging, and also preparing blankets and cotton clothes.” Fan Li responded.

Bai Ruozhu nodded, Fan Li was quite thorough; in this cold weather, with homes gone, blankets and clothes were lost too.

She turned and looked at those who’d experienced the fire, feeling a great desolation, reminiscent of the Guangqi Town plague, where afflicted citizens were similarly desperate and helpless.

Though not as severe as the plague now, many are more despairing, having lost everything in the freezing cold, how will they survive?

Bai Ruozhu briefly allocated tasks and then strode toward the injured.

The mildly burned were tended to by Lin Ping’er and Madam Wu with medicine, while Bai Yihong and some guards checked around, marking severely injured patients for Bai Ruozhu or other doctors to treat.
