Chapter 1635: Chapter 1635: Ruolan is a murderer

In the following two days, the Bai Family held a funeral for La Mei and chose a decent spot outside the city to bury her there.

Many servants in the Bai Family gossiped privately, saying La Mei was fortunate; they couldn’t afford such a good coffin, let alone find such a Fengshui treasure land, saying La Mei’s death wasn’t in vain, and in the next life, she would definitely reincarnate well.

When Bai Ruozhu heard these words, she only felt helpless. Could dying so unexpectedly at such a young age be called a good fate?

No matter how lavishly her family buried La Mei, once a person dies, what can they enjoy? It was only about having a clear conscience.

However, because of this matter, the Bai Family’s servants worked even harder; the ancients valued posthumous funerals, and they all hoped to receive the same treatment as La Mei someday.

At the same time, a rumor slowly spread in the Capital City, and Bai Ruozhu happened to overhear it when inspecting the Hua Xiangrong Weaving Pavilion.

She hadn’t yet gotten off the horse carriage when she heard two women discussing, who had purchased something from Hua Xiangrong and were walking out, unaware of her nearby presence.

”The items at Hua Xiangrong are indeed lovely, but the Bai Family people are somewhat cruel.” One woman whispered, and Bai Ruozhu stopped her movement to get off the carriage, opting to continue to sit and listen.

The other woman tugged at her companion’s sleeve and warned, ”Lower your voice. Nowadays, the Bai Family is a prominent family in the Capital; you should be careful not to cause yourself trouble.”

”I’m just speaking the truth; if they dare to act, are they afraid of being talked about? Even if the lives of servants aren’t precious, they can’t just keep killing them one after the other, right? Even if there’s a mad person in the household, they shouldn’t randomly kill people.” The woman spoke disdainfully.

”The Bai Family probably couldn’t bear their niece having no one to care for her.” The other woman had bought something from Hua Xiangrong, and her words seemed partially in defense of the Bai Family.

”Humph, but letting a crazy niece continue killing servants? I’ve heard the one recently sent out was already the sixth maid dead. Also, people say Bai Family constantly has maids disappearing periodically, claiming they were sent to branch stores, but they were actually dead!”

As Bai Ruozhu listened from the horse carriage, her expression grew increasingly grim. Who was spreading these rumors, and how could they fabricate them so elaborately?

Indeed, she would periodically arrange for competent maids to help at branch stores in other locations, primarily those who learned weaving, but that became evidence for people spreading rumors.

She originally wished to care for Ruolan well and protect her but never expected someone would push Ruolan into the spotlight, claiming she was a murderer.

”Master, should I send someone to investigate?” Jianqi’s voice came from outside the carriage, and by this time, the two women had walked away. Bai Ruozhu gritted her teeth and said, ”Investigate, find out who is causing this trouble, and also check if anyone from the Residence is secretly sending messages out.”

”Yes.” Jianqi replied and went to arrange it, while Bai Ruozhu got off the carriage and headed towards Hua Xiangrong.

Once Fusa saw Bai Ruozhu entering, she hurriedly approached with a worried expression, saying, ”Ruozhu, I’ve heard some bad rumors...”

”Are they about Ruolan killing people?” Bai Ruozhu asked.

Fusa nodded and sighed, saying, ”That’s not all; there’s also talk that Ruolan contracted a strange disease, surviving by consuming human blood. So the Bai Family has hidden her in a remote yard in the Residence, sending maids to serve her, actually as her food supply.”

Bai Ruozhu’s mouth twitched, ”What’s all that about, and how could someone come up with stories about vampires? Such imagination is truly rich.”

”There’s more people saying you used the Medical Alliance to hold free consultations, secretly selecting suitable targets for Ruolan, claiming that the missing people in the City were captured by you and sent to Ruolan.” Fusa stomped as she spoke, ”What nonsense! I’m so angry I wish to confront them, but those who told me were just passing on what they heard outside as a kind reminder to us.”

Bai Ruozhu took a deep breath, ”Don’t worry, wise people won’t believe rumors; I will thoroughly investigate this and ensure those behind the rumors are not let off.”

”Fortunately, Ruolan doesn’t understand these words; otherwise, she would be deeply hurt. Why don’t you recall all the dispatched maids, and then these rumors would automatically break?” Fusa suggested.

Bai Ruozhu shook her head, ”Even if they’re all recalled, who can prove those maids were the ones reportedly dead in the rumors? Who can prove I didn’t get replacements? This would only make us appear guilty, complicating the situation further.”

”Opponents probably anticipated this, targeting us. I hope this doesn’t affect Zepei and your husband’s political careers.” Fusa worriedly said.

”That won’t happen. The current Emperor is a wise monarch who wouldn’t believe such baseless rumors.” Bai Ruozhu reassured Fusa again, instructing her not to clash with customers regarding this issue in the coming days and that she would handle it all.

After bidding Fusa farewell, Bai Ruozhu got on the horse carriage to return to the Residence, needing to stabilize the emotions of the household’s other members.

Upon careful thought, whoever did this undoubtedly has some backing; otherwise, the rumors wouldn’t be so widespread and absurd.

Moreover, they must bear a grudge against the Bai Family; thus, probable suspects are Huilan Grand Princess, Liu Xiyu’s Liu Family, and the long-quiet Wang Family and Yang Family.

The Yang Family, punished by the Emperor, isn’t like before. Although it’s claimed a Quanrong assassin killed Yang Tianhua, the Yang Family somewhat suspects Jiang Yichun, thus holding greater hatred against the Bai Family.

Then there’s Hao Baishuang, and the recently troubled Dou Family, and He Lianlian, but those individuals don’t have much backing, lacking the ability to stir such a big commotion.

Bai Ruozhu pondered all the way but wasn’t someone to act rashly, waiting for Jianqi to investigate thoroughly before proceeding.

Indeed, by evening, almost everyone in the Bai Family had heard the rumors, gathering to discuss countermeasures.

”There’s no need to worry; I’ve already sent people to investigate. Once we know the opponent, we can devise further strategies.” Bai Ruozhu advised.

The family members expressed their guesses, and then a servant hurriedly reported, ”Master, Madam, Capital Inspector Fan has requested to see you.”

Bai Yihong suddenly stood up, ”What’s the Capital Inspector here for? Could he be here to investigate us? Are they suspecting us just because of these rumors?”

Bai Zepei rose and held his father gently, saying, ”Father, don’t be upset. Let’s first meet Lord Fan and ask him. Even if he’s really here because of those rumors, it’s protocol and doesn’t constitute a charge. There’s no need to worry excessively.”

Bai Yihong was calmed by his son’s words and didn’t become as agitated. He sat back down, saying, ”Alright, I’ll listen to you. Let’s see what happens.”

Bai Zepei nodded towards Bai Ruozhu, both held official positions, taking a step out to welcome Fan Li.
