Chapter 283: Chapter 211: High Expert Fee

Dean Liu quickly thought of a very suitable candidate: Director You Wei from Xiao City First People’s Hospital.

Director You was a prominent figure in the field of hepatobiliary surgery in Jin Province, and he had worked with Yu State Hospital on multiple occasions.

You Wei’s medical skills were beyond question. The only downside was that he was extremely greedy. In addition to performing various freelance surgeries, he also ran his own social media accounts to chase engagement and seek the spotlight.

Soon, Dean Liu got in touch with Director You.

After hearing about the patient’s condition, You Wei also found it to be very difficult and high-risk.

Director You agreed that the best plan was to use the finger fracture technique to crush the liver tissue between the two wound tracts, opening up the wound to ligate the ruptured bile ducts and blood vessels under direct vision. Afterward, the necrotic liver tissue would be resected.

However, the surgery was extremely difficult and risky. He could perform it, but it would require a hefty expert’s fee.

”Dean Liu, you can discuss it with the patient’s family. Thirty-five thousand. If that’s acceptable, I’ll head over to Yu State Hospital right away. Given the patient’s condition, there’s no time to waste. You’d better reach an agreement with the family quickly.”

You Wei was a man who prized personal gain above all else. As long as the price was right, anything was negotiable. But if they couldn’t agree on the money, getting him to step in and save the day was impossible.

After hanging up, Dean Liu felt that You Wei was rather unscrupulous, but there was nothing he could do. After all, the man’s skills were undeniable.

Besides, in a way, a small local hospital was fortunate to find someone like You Wei, who could be persuaded with money.

Most top-tier freelance surgeons didn’t need the money and wouldn’t even consider a case unless it was a referral from a trusted acquaintance.

Take Director Fu Jinfen and Director Shen Xiaofei from Jinggang University Affiliated First Hospital, for example. They were even more skilled than You Wei, but Yu State Hospital didn’t have the connections to hire them.

With Director You Wei’s quote in hand, Dean Liu and Director Duan went to speak with the patient’s family personally.

Huang Liangyu waited anxiously in the hallway outside the trauma room.

When Dean Liu and Director Duan arrived, Director Duan explained the patient’s current condition, their recommendation, and Director You’s price.

”The patient’s condition is critical. She has massive liver hemorrhaging and a damaged common bile duct. To successfully stop the bleeding and proceed with the liver resection and bile duct repair... it’s beyond the capabilities of the surgeons at Yu State Hospital.”

”Given her condition, she is not stable enough for a long-distance transfer. Therefore, the best option is to bring in a specialist from within the province to perform the surgery here.”

”Our Dean Liu has contacted You Wei, the Director of Hepatic Tumor Surgery at Xiao City First People’s Hospital. Director You is one of the top five hepatobiliary surgeons in Jin Province. He has indicated that he is confident he can perform the surgery.”

”The only issue is that for a high-risk, high-difficulty surgery like this, he requires a specific expert’s fee: thirty-five thousand!”

Huang Liangyu froze. Thirty-five thousand was a huge sum; he couldn’t possibly come up with it on such short notice. His son’s wedding—buying a house and a car—had already drained the family’s savings.

”Dean Liu, I’m willing to pay, but I can’t get the money together that quickly. Can you ask Director You to perform the surgery first while I go raise the funds?”

Huang Liangyu pleaded.

Director Duan was helpless regarding Director You’s way of doing things.

”The hospital doesn’t handle the expert’s fee. It’s paid directly to Director You... I’m sorry.”

Listening to the exchange between Dean Liu and Huang Liangyu, Wu Mu, who was standing to the side, turned to Wu Ting and asked:

”Son, do you know this Director You from Xiao City First People’s Hospital?”

He thought that if Wu Ting knew Director You, perhaps they could ask for a little flexibility.

Wu Ting shook his head:

”I’ve had some dealings with Xiao City First People’s Hospital, but I’m not very familiar with this Director You.”

Hearing Wu Ting’s words, the glimmer of hope that had just sparked within Huang Liangyu was extinguished.

Wu Mu patted his son’s shoulder. In a situation like this, if you knew the person, you should help if you could.

But if you don’t know them, you can’t help, and there’s nothing to be done. Wu Mu wasn’t the type to force the issue.

”If there’s no other way, then we’ll just have to pool the money,” Wu Mu said. ”Liangyu, figure out how much you’re short. Zhang Qing and I can chip in.”

When a life was on the line, and once Wu Mu confirmed there was no room for negotiation with Director You, his only choice was to lend Huang Liangyu money. They were from the same village, after all. In other matters, depending on how close he was to someone, Wu Mu wouldn’t play the fool and throw his money around.

But now that Sister Hong’s life was at stake, Wu Mu wasn’t the kind of person to put money above all else.

”Uncle Huang, please, try to stay calm.”

Wu Ting hadn’t wanted to intervene, but he knew he had to help when it was necessary.

”Dean Liu, Director Duan, could you tell me the findings from the exploratory laparotomy?”

Director Duan knew Wu Ting was a doctor in the emergency department at City First Hospital, so he explained to Dean Liu:

”Dean Liu, Wu Ting is a doctor from the emergency department at City First Hospital. He knows a few specialists in the province. Let me brief him on the situation; perhaps he can find a specialist he knows to perform the surgery.”

Dean Liu nodded. ”If the family can find a specialist on their own, that would be even better. If they arrange it themselves, they could save a lot on the expert’s fee.”

In truth, Dean Liu wasn’t fond of You Wei either. The man was incredibly arrogant and always acted high and mighty. If it weren’t for the money, he wouldn’t give Yu State Hospital the time of day.

Director Duan relayed the patient’s condition in full detail, and also described the surgical plan Dean Liu had proposed.
