Sweet Nostalgia of the 80s

Chapter 2286: Chapter 2279: A Pie Falling from the Sky

”Hey, Xiuzhu! What are you doing here in the fields pulling up green onions at this time of day?”

”The kids’ father hasn’t eaten yet. So, I’m getting some green onions to fry up with eggs for him!” Although the family was going through tough times, Liang Xiuzhu couldn’t bear to see her husband suffer.

If they couldn’t afford chicken, they’d have eggs instead!

”I can smell something really nice coming from your yard. I thought maybe you were cooking chicken. Why are you frying green onions with eggs instead of eating chicken?” Liu Qiaoqiao asked.

”There wasn’t much chicken to begin with. How could it be enough for so many people? Of course, we have to prioritize the kids first,” Liang Xiuzhu said with a smile.

”Oh, by the way, Xiuzhu, why is your Ning Chenguang still here? Is he some high-status family’s child or not? Why hasn’t anyone come to claim him? Could it be that they’ve abandoned him?” Liu Qiaoqiao leaned closer and asked.

”No way. My Fusheng said his family wouldn’t abandon him. His parents are both high-ranking officials, educated people! There’s no way they’d do something like lose a child and then just abandon him. No way! The child had a head injury and hasn’t fully recovered yet. That’s why he sometimes can’t remember anything, and can’t find his family.” Liang Xiuzhu firmly believed that the parents who raised such a well-behaved child like Ning Chenguang must come from a very cultured family.

”Hopefully,” Liu Qiaoqiao felt a twinge of jealousy in her heart after hearing this, ”Your family sure has a knack for picking up things, huh? You picked up a high-status family’s child just like that. When his parents come, they’ll probably give you some money, right? Look at how broke your family became because of the fines for having extra kids, but now, it’s like a pie falling from the sky.”

”What’s with the way you’re talking, Qiaoqiao? We aren’t expecting them to give us any money!” Liang Xiuzhu’s face darkened, ”My family may be poor, but we’re poor with dignity! We absolutely wouldn’t take their money!”

”Really?” Liu Qiaoqiao couldn’t stand it when others lived better than her.

Originally, He Fusheng’s family lived much better than hers, but then the country started advocating for having just one child. Who would have thought that when Liang Xiuzhu got pregnant with the second one, she didn’t even know?

By the time they found out, the child was already four months along and fully formed.

Both she and her husband couldn’t bear to terminate the pregnancy, so they secretly gave birth! But then there were fines and classes to attend, and their living standards reverted back to post-liberation days.

Liu Qiaoqiao had been rather happy about that, but then, a few years later, they picked up a high-status family’s child.

The village chief even said He Fusheng had great luck, and that in the future, he’d soar to success.

Watching others succeed, Liu Qiaoqiao felt unhappy. It would be best if Liang Xiuzhu’s family stayed poor forever.

”Of course,” Liang Xiuzhu said firmly, ”We’re not selling the child, why would we want their money?”

While the two women stood talking at the edge of the field, they suddenly heard a series of honks. Right after, a military jeep slowly drove down the dirt road and stopped in front of them.

Xiaozhou, the guard, poked his head out from the driver’s seat and asked, ”Ladies, could you tell me how to get to He Fusheng’s house?”

”Oh my, aren’t they headed to your place?” Liu Qiaoqiao said, looking at Liang Xiuzhu.

”Yes! I’m from He Fusheng’s family! May I ask, is there something you need with our Fusheng?” Liang Xiuzhu inquired.

At this moment, Qin Jian and An Hao exchanged glances inside the car, a look of joy flashing in their eyes.

Qin Jian opened the car door, stepped out, and stood upright in front of Liang Xiuzhu, giving a sharp military salute: ”Hello, ma’am! My name is Qin Jian! I am Ning Chenguang’s father!”
