Sweet Nostalgia of the 80s

Chapter 2285: Chapter 2278: Chicken Soup

He Fusheng tied the ox to a tree by the door and walked into the store with his hands behind his back.

Ning Chenguang followed closely behind him, not leaving a step.

”How much is this cake per pound?” He Fusheng pointed at the one he could swallow in one bite and asked.

”Three dollars and seventy cents a pound!” the shop assistant said.

”Give me three pounds!” After saying that, He Fusheng turned his head and asked Ning Chenguang, ”Guangguang, your brain works great, can you calculate for me, how much do I give them in total?”

”Eleven dollars and ten cents!” Ning Chenguang answered promptly.

”This child is really smart, not a penny off.” The shop assistant flicked the abacus beads with a smile and praised Ning Chenguang.

”Indeed! This kid’s brain is even better than a calculator,” He Fusheng said happily.

The cake was bought, and they got back on the ox cart and continued their way home.

It was after two in the afternoon when He Fusheng finally brought Ning Chenguang home.

The old ox was exhausted from the trip to the county, and he gave the ox two extra troughs of fodder before going back into the house.

”You haven’t eaten yet, have you? We’ve all had our meal. We ate half of the chicken and left the other half for you, perfect with this rice!” Liang Xiuzhu said with a smile, as she brought the meal to the table from the kitchen.

The tempting aroma of the chicken soup made Ning Chenguang’s mouth water, his eyes fixated on the big soup pot in the middle of the table, almost drooling.

In the six months he had been living with He Yue’s family, he hadn’t eaten anything particularly delicious.

After all, resources were limited, and the family lived off a few acres of poor farmland. In the winter, He Fusheng went to the mountains to hunt, bringing back wild rabbits or pheasants to process and eat.

Things like fruit and cake or milk were even more out of the question.

Life in the village was tough, not comparable to his previous life in the city at all.

”Does it smell good?” He Yue sat on a small stool, resting her chin in her hand, watching Ning Chenguang, ”Eat more! My brother and I had eaten at noon. Not only is the soup delicious, but even the meat is tasty. My brother was so tempted he almost bit his tongue.”

After speaking, He Yue burst into a silvery laugh.

As her daughter spoke, Liang Xiuzhu had already dished out a bowl of tasty chicken soup with meat for Ning Chenguang: ”Come on, if you like it, have more! If it’s not enough, there’s more in the pot!”

”Hmm!” Ning Chenguang smiled shyly, held up the bowl with both hands, and drank the soup in one gulp. Then, he grabbed a chicken leg with his hand and started biting into it heartily.

In no time, he had finished the whole drumstick.

He Fusheng slowly sipped on the chicken soup and, seeing Ning Chenguang eating so heartily, placed the chicken from his own bowl into Ning Chenguang’s bowl.

Then, he said to Liang Xiuzhu, ”Wife, can you go to our vegetable patch and wash a few spring onions for me, and bring me some of your yellow sauce? I want to have two big bowls of rice.”

Liang Xiuzhu understood what her husband meant.

Seeing Chenguang enjoying the food so much, he couldn’t bear to eat it himself, so he saved the chicken for the child.

This honest man treated everyone so well.

”Alright. Then you wait!” Liang Xiuzhu wiped her hands, went out the door, turned left, and went to their small vegetable patch to get some onions.

She selected a bunch of long white and vigorous spring onions, pulled a bunch out, and was about to head home when she ran into her neighbor Li Ergou’s gossip-loving wife, Liu Qiaoqiao.
