Sweet Nostalgia of the 80s

Chapter 421: Chapter 421: The Unit is to be Disbanded

Ning Yibin let out a deep sigh and waved his hand towards Zhang Yun, ”You go ahead!”

Hearing Ning Yibin’s sigh and seeing Qin Jian’s silent face, Zhang Yun felt that something was amiss, ”What’s going on with you two today? Did you have a fight?”

”No. Just not in a good mood.” Ning Yibin reached into his pocket for a cigarette and was about to light it up when Zhang Yun swiftly moved forward and snatched it away, ”Stop smoking! Your heart is not good, and you’re still smoking! What’s actually going on? Talk to me!”

”Mom! The troops are going to be disbanded.” Qin Jian blurted out.

”What?” Zhang Yun was taken aback, ”Which troops?”

”Our troops.”

Zhang Yun gasped, ”What about the arrangements after disbandment? No, what about your arrangements?”

”We’ll be scattered. I might be reassigned to the Northwest,” Qin Jian said solemnly.

The moment Zhang Yun heard this, her legs gave out, and she collapsed onto the sofa, tears streaming down her face, ”Why would they disband a perfectly fine unit? When can Jianzi come back if he goes to the Northwest? We just reunited with our son and now we have to separate again?”

Ning Yibin naturally couldn’t bear to part with his son. He was also very upset. Hearing Zhang Yun say this made him angry, ”It’s a central decision, why are you asking me why they’re disbanding? You think I want to be separated from my son?”

”Can’t you think of something?” Zhang Yun said through tears, ”At the end of the day, you’re a Commander, just watching your son go to such a far-off place? Besides, An Hao is still in school, and the two haven’t even married! Even if they were married, if An Hao follows the military later on, it would leave just us old folks.”

”Zhang Yun, you were once a soldier! How can you say such a thing? Your ideological consciousness is too low! What does it mean that I am a Commander? Can’t a Commander’s son go to the Northwest? My son should go even more! It’s much better than those warriors who are demobilized and sent home!” Ning Yibin banged the table as he spoke.

Seeing him getting angry, Zhang Yun, fearful he might get sick, quickly tried to calm him, ”Old Ning, don’t get mad! I’m just anxious.”

”Is being anxious useful?” If it were, he would be even more anxious.

”Mom, this is the central government’s decision, and dad can’t change it. I will be going to the Northwest for now, but if there’s a chance, I might apply to be reassigned back. Don’t be too sad. Besides, after dad retires, you both could come and join An Hao and me. Our country is vast and beautiful, and it’s the same no matter where we are.”

”The Northwest is barren,” Zhang Yun couldn’t get past this obstacle in her mind.

”It’s barren now, but it will get better over time. Mom, don’t be so upset.” Qin Jian stood up and embraced the tearful Zhang Yun, ”Besides, this is only being proposed now. The actual disbandment date won’t be until after the new year. This year I will be able to spend a proper New Year with you.”

Zhang Yun, dabbing her tears, nodded, ”Okay.”

”Alright. Stop crying.” Ning Yibin, seeing his wife crying pitifully, felt that perhaps he had been too harsh, ”I was just not in a good mood. Don’t take it to heart. Since our son is a soldier, he must obey the organization’s rules. You should have this awareness! It’s possible to apply for a reassignment in the future, this is allowed, so don’t be hung up on it.”

”Mm.” Zhang Yun nodded and said to Qin Jian, ”Go on, and let An Hao know about this too, so she can be prepared.”

”Okay.” Qin Jian got up and went to the kitchen.

Zhang Yun calmed down and said to Ning Yibin, ”Old Ning, there’s something I must discuss with you! Our son and his fiancée’s wedding needs to be moved up.”
