Back To The 80s: President's Doted Wife

Chapter 1816: Chapter 1818: Self-Doubt

After persuading Qi Xiaoqi, Cheng Su went over with Mother Qi some things to pay attention to when looking after Xiao Qi, and Mother Cheng also needed to tell Mother Qi about Xiao Qi’s personal habits.

Father Qi, on the other hand, was taken aback for a moment when he heard what Cheng Su said. He looked over at his old wife, saw her face full of joy, and suppressed what he was going to say.

”...Now Xiao Qi can already walk, and he can even run slowly. Kids are full of energy; the older they get, the faster they run, and old folks probably won’t be able to catch up with him,” Cheng Su said. ”If it’s inside the compound, that’s still better. Once you’re outside, you have to stay extra alert. He runs fast; in a blink you won’t be able to catch up and won’t see him anymore. More importantly, public security is bad now, there are more and more kidnappings. You absolutely can’t take your eyes off him, and you can’t casually trust people, handing the child over to strangers to watch.”

By the time she got to the end, Cheng Su’s expression was extremely serious.

With the arrival of the 1990s, the economy had started to develop rapidly, and public security kept getting worse; there were countless cases of children being trafficked.

Her son was clever and sharp, but that didn’t change the fact that he was just a child a little over one year old. No matter how smart, how could he compare to an adult? If someone really made a move on this little guy, even if he wanted to resist, he wouldn’t have the strength.

So Cheng Su was very serious and very earnest. This concerned her only child; she couldn’t afford not to be serious, no matter who the other party was—Qi Taiguo was no exception.

Mother Cheng said, ”Exactly, you can’t take your eyes off a child for even a second. In-law, you...” Her gaze slid over Mother Qi’s legs and she fell silent.

Mother Qi uncomfortably drew back her feet a little, patted her chest, and said, ”Don’t worry, this is my eldest grandson. How could I not be more nervous than you, in-law? I’ll definitely watch over him like he’s my own eyeball.”

”But of course. We’re just being naggy and saying one more sentence. In-law, you’ll definitely guard him like he’s your very heart.” Mother Cheng forced the corners of her mouth up and didn’t say more, but inside she felt sour and bitter.

Cheng Su pressed her lips together when she saw this.

This kind of Mother Qi, even though she was thumping her chest loud and hard, still didn’t really put her at ease. Otherwise, should they hire a nanny?

A nanny, someone with no blood ties—how could you expect her to truly be good to your child? She probably wouldn’t be as attentive as Mother Qi.

Cheng Su looked over at Qi Xiaoqi, who was playing with blocks beside Father Cheng, and wondered if she should just look after him herself, and forget about whether she graduated or not.

Back then, she had talked with Qi Taiguo about how, in order to accompany their child, she would first get her career in order, so she could grow up alongside him.

Now, plans couldn’t keep up with changes. She’d had the child ahead of schedule while she was still in school, and in the end, the child had come all the same.

Although she hadn’t missed out on her son’s growing up—in fact, because her business had already become fairly mature, aside from classes and the occasional matter to deal with, she could basically be with Qi Xiaoqi all the time—already much better than many people.

Take Chunhua, for example. Back then, for the sake of her job, didn’t she still have to send her child back to her hometown? She couldn’t see the child even once a year. When she missed the child so much it hurt, all she could do was secretly wipe away tears.

And then there was Hualing. Her parents’ home was close enough, but it wasn’t in the same city, so she still had to be separated from her child, only going back once a week to see him. It was only now, with her job transferred back, that the family could be reunited.

Cheng Su let out a sigh. This was the dilemma of life, the difficulty of being a woman; you always had to sacrifice something—your career, your social life, and so on.

She suddenly started to wonder if her decision had been wrong.

Cheng Su was no longer sure.
