Reborn As Super Heiress

Chapter 1800: Chapter 1703: The Dam Collapses

In the large tent, only Li Gang and Liao Ping were there, with Huo Sining nowhere to be found.

Li Gang and the others were shaken awake by Zhang Deming. The group, with sleepy eyes, looked around, but there was no sign of Huo Sining.

None of them knew where Huo Sining had gone, all expressing confusion. She was in the tent before they slept, so how did she disappear upon waking?

The group inquired around the base, eventually informed that the West City Reservoir dike was about to collapse. The rescue team brought a batch of medical personnel to Xicheng District, and a girl in protective gear went along, sitting in the medical personnel’s vehicle.

Gu Xu was fuming. The sweet images in his mind vanished, and his eyes almost flared with anger.

This girl had truly been spoiled by him, behaving recklessly without consequence.

In such a dangerous place, she ran around recklessly without any crisis awareness. Her courage was too great!

”Hey, Xu Zi, don’t be mad. Your sister-in-law is just eager to save people, which is why she followed them. Besides, she didn’t know we were here to find her; otherwise, she would’ve stayed here obediently and not wandered around so unpredictably.”

Ouyang Jun noticed Gu Xu’s face darken and immediately felt something was amiss, hurriedly laughed it off, trying to excuse Huo Sining’s actions.

Gu Xu pursed his lips without speaking, yet didn’t believe a word of Ouyang Jun’s explanation.

Even if she knew they were coming to find her, with her temper, she’d likely still follow the rescue team. It would be a rare sight to see her stay put obediently.

Gu Xu had intentions to reestablish his authority over her, but at this moment, he realized finding a wife with too strong a will might not be a good thing.

”So, what do we do now?”

Qin Tian was a bit worried. After hours of following Huo Sining, they hadn’t even caught a glimpse of her. When would this cat-and-mouse game end?

Gu Xu looked back at Ouyang Jun and the others, remained silent for a few seconds, then said to Zhang Deming: ”Go bring over your police station’s car.”

Zhang Deming didn’t ask what Gu Xu was planning, he immediately headed back to the police station to get the car.

Ouyang Jun had a vague sense of what Gu Xu intended: ”Xu Zi, you...”

Before he finished speaking, Gu Xu interjected: ”We don’t know the situation on that side. Stay here, if anything comes up, talk to Zhang Deming. I’m heading to Xicheng District; once I find her, I’ll meet up with you.”

Ouyang Jun and Qin Tian were upset hearing this: ”Xu Zi, what do you mean? We came with you, and now you want to leave us behind once you find your wife? Why should we stay here? If you’re going, we’re all going. You won’t leave us here!”

These two weren’t foolish; they knew Gu Xu thought Xicheng District was too dangerous, which is why he wanted them to stay safer at the base. However, even with good intentions, Ouyang Jun and Qin Tian might not appreciate it.

Gu Xu, knowing their tempers, saw their fiery eyes and resignedly changed his mind: ”If you want to come, hurry up, no dawdling!”

Huo Sining didn’t know Mr. Gu had come from afar. She accompanied the rescue team to Xicheng District, where they urgently began repairs on the cracked sections of the reservoir dike. The rest of the medical team went door to door, evacuating survivors to safe zones and treating injuries.

Having received prior notice, the surviving villagers knew the reservoir dike might collapse, so most had evacuated upstream, though some remained due to massive home losses or buried relatives in the ruins, reluctant to leave.

As the rescue team tried to persuade them and save them, a loud noise suddenly echoed. From the loudspeaker, a voice shouted:

”The dike’s broken; those still in the village, head to higher ground; floodwaters are coming soon!”

Huo Sining’s face grew tense, and the rescue team panicked. A local familiar with the terrain urgently shouted: ”Head north; there’s a mountain over there, hundreds of meters high. The summit won’t be flooded!”

The villager led the way, and the group sprinted as fast as they could towards the small northern mountain.

The flood rushed in swiftly, and within minutes, it swept through, submerging the nearest village.

Huo Sining and the others ran, drenched in sweat, and finally reached the mountain. Turning back, they saw water engulf everything, swallowing trees, crops, and even houses.

”There must be survivors in the ruins, but with the dike collapsed, who knows how many innocent lives will be lost!”

Seeing this, the rescue team members’ eyes were red with emotion.

Suddenly, someone spoke up.

”Damn it, why are those Hua kids still at home?!”

The villager who had led the rescue team stared, incredulous.

Everyone followed his gaze and saw two children on the flat roof of a distant house, waving at them.

”I checked the Hua Family before, didn’t see anyone, thought they’d all evacuated, why are there still people left?”

”You didn’t know? The Hua couple went out to work two days ago, leaving only the two kids and Madam Hua at home,” someone explained.

Upon hearing this, the villager panicked: ”What? Hua Chengqiao went out? That’s terrible! When I visited the Hua Family today, I saw Madam Hua buried in the pigsty ruins, likely feeding the pigs there when the earthquake hit, collapsing the shed on her. By the time I arrived, the old woman had stopped breathing. What can we do now? The Hua Family only has those two kids left, with no adults. Nothing can happen to them!”

The villager’s eyes remained fixed on the distant roof with the two kids, sweating profusely from anxiety. After pacing anxiously in place, the villager rolled up his sleeves, ready to enter the water.

”Lao Wu, what are you doing?”

Seeing this, several villagers nearby panicked, shouting, ”Are you planning to swim over? Are you crazy? The water’s rushing fast; going in is suicide!”

The villager’s eyes were red: ”Then what’s the alternative? The Hua Family has only Hua Chengqiao as the sole heir. Now his wife is over forty; if those two kids are gone, the Hua Family might end with them. When Hua Chengqiao returns and learns his children are gone, how will he cope?”
