Reborn As Super Heiress

Chapter 1775: Chapter 1677: Driven Mad

Gu Xu received a call from Huo Sining, and his mood instantly brightened. Watching the marketing director of the other company analyze the prospects of the new project, he couldn’t help but be a little distracted, feeling a strong urge to return home immediately, desperate to finish his work and head back to his country.

The meeting finally ended, and Gu Xu felt his eyes slightly sore. He couldn’t help but stretch lazily, exhaling a long breath. The project collaboration was mostly discussed, and the rest would be simple. He no longer needed to stay here and could leave the remaining work to the legal department colleague who came with him while he went directly back to the country.

Thinking this, Gu Xu’s heart raced with an impulsive thought. He eagerly picked up his phone, wanting to call his wife immediately, but he suddenly remembered Huo Sining mentioning that she was too tired and wanted to sleep. At that moment, she was probably sleeping soundly, and calling her now would definitely wake her up.

Gu Xu hesitated for a moment and decided not to make the call. His wife had been exhausted from filming recently, and she finally had some time to rest and catch up on sleep. It was better not to disturb her.

With this in mind, he abandoned the idea of making the call and decided to join his colleagues from the meeting room for a meal at the restaurant.

However, upon entering the restaurant, he noticed that everyone was craning their necks, looking at the large TV on the front wall. The atmosphere was entirely different from the usual lively chatter of the restaurant; everyone wore a solemn expression, regardless of age or gender.

Gu Xu paused, instinctively turning his gaze to the TV.

The marketing director couldn’t help but glance at Gu Xu as well, gesturing eagerly: ”Mr. Gu, there’s breaking news. Something major has happened in your country. A 7.9 magnitude earthquake, many buildings have collapsed!”

Gu Xu stood at the restaurant’s entrance, watching the scenes displayed on the large screen, listening to the voices in the news:

”The Huaxia Earthquake Administration has announced a strong earthquake in Qingya County, Shu Province, with a focal depth of 12 kilometers. Aftershocks are still ongoing. Rescue teams are rushing to the scene with full efforts. The country’s leadership is highly concerned and has contacted the local military district immediately for disaster emergency handling. Casualty statistics are currently unavailable.”

The footage showed countless buildings collapsing, and people seemed as tiny as ants before the might of natural calamities, swallowed up in an instant.

Even abroad, watching this scene, strangers of different races couldn’t help but gasp, ”Oh my God, even the bridges are destroyed. How are those rescue teams going to get in?”

Gu Xu was entirely stunned. Just a moment ago, he was on a phone call with his wife, immersed in beautiful fantasies of reuniting with her for a romantic time together. Now, Heaven had played such a gigantic joke on him!

His mind went blank, feeling his heartbeat growing increasingly intense, pounding against his chest. He stood there rigid, feeling as if his entire body was plunged into a thousand-year-old icy abyss, bearing intense pain.

He instinctively reached for his pocket, only to find that he had left his phone upstairs.

Almost violently, he charged to his business partner, Kerry Wells, without even asking permission, snatching the phone from Wells’ hand as he was sending a text message, his fingers trembling uncontrollably as he quickly dialed the number he could almost recite backward.

Soon, a cold female voice came on the line: Sorry, the number you dialed is unavailable...

Gu Xu struggled to control his emotions to prevent a breakdown but couldn’t help but curse with all his might. No longer able to delay, he turned and dashed upstairs like the wind.

The high-ranking staff members watched in a daze, exchanging bewildered looks, completely at a loss as to what was happening.

Wells had developed some understanding of Gu Xu during their negotiations. Despite Gu Xu being only in his thirties, his demeanor and poise left Wells with a refreshing feeling. Collaborating with such a person, Wells found the experience quite enjoyable.

However, this was the first time Wells witnessed Gu Xu in such a state of panic. Seeing him hurriedly running upstairs, Wells had a vague understanding and instinctively glanced at the TV screen, urgently telling his secretary beside him, ”Go upstairs and check if Mr. Gu needs help. Arrange for it as soon as possible!”

Gu Xu rushed upstairs and found that his phone had been bombarded with calls. There were calls from the family home, Zhou Shitao, Chief Lu, and other friends of Huo Sining, all unable to reach her and turning their calls to him.

But Gu Xu couldn’t bother to contact them. He flipped through the call log, but there was no missed call from Huo Sining. His heart sank, his eyes turned bloodshot, and he fell into a state of frenzy.

The secretary who had come with Gu Xu happened to emerge from the conference room after organizing materials. Gu Xu saw the secretary and, without explaining further, urgently wrote down a number and said, ”Zhou Qi, recharge it, now!”

After saying this, Gu Xu thought of something else, speaking incoherently, ”Drop whatever you’re doing. Buy me the earliest possible ticket to return home, immediately, now!”

Gu Xu’s voice was frighteningly low. Zhou Qi had never seen Gu Xu like this before. Although unclear about what had happened, he reacted quickly, calming himself and swiftly executing Gu Xu’s orders.

Gu Xu didn’t waste time either, hastily packing his belongings and waiting in the hall with a suitcase.

Ten minutes later, Zhou Qi had booked the soonest flight back, conveying the flight number and time to Gu Xu.

Gu Xu felt like his heart was treading on a breaking iceberg, with the danger of falling through at any moment. He was so tense he could hardly breathe, struggling to calm himself, asked hoarsely, ”What about the phone, is it recharged?”

Zhou Qi nodded, ”It should be reachable now.”

Gu Xu immediately turned around to call Huo Sining.

The phone was indeed recharged, but what came through was still the cold voice: Sorry, the number you have dialed cannot be connected at the moment, please try again later.

Gu Xu felt a rush of blood in reverse, his face instantly paling, full of hope turning into disappointment. A boundless anxiety engulfed him, his phone almost slipping from his grasp.
