The Ace Bigshot Becomes A Farmgirl

Because there were many staff in Lu’s Workshop, and some of them had even bought plots here to build houses, plus the nearby villages,

this area had already formed a small residential community.

So the sharp ones had long since started driving mule carriages, donkey carts, and ox carts back and forth to take passengers; a trip back to the county town was just ten or twenty coins.

But now that the staff of Lu’s Workshop had stable wages, and if they did well they even got bonuses at the end of the month, spending ten or twenty coins on a ride was nothing to them.

So these passenger carts earned even more here than they did picking up people from village to village.

Not to mention others, even Lu Dasong had had the same idea.

Last time Daniu bought a mule carriage for the family, it made his coming and going very convenient; seeing how it could make money, he wanted to pick up a few people along the way and earn some travel fare.

Unfortunately, all the staff in the workshop knew him, knew he was the Chief Steward’s father, the boss’s Eldest Uncle. With that identity sitting there, who would dare let him give them a lift? Only Dazhuang would occasionally catch a free ride when he went home, and that made Lu Dasong feel very frustrated.

So to the people present, mule carriages were extremely convenient tools.

Even if they themselves didn’t go home that often and didn’t use it much, their family could drive the cart and take passengers; that was also a way to make money.

And this way of making money could last; if they stopped doing it in the future, selling the mule carriage wouldn’t be cheap either.

So the staff who had originally been thinking that winning third prize would already be good enough were now excitedly shouting that they wanted second prize.

Daniu shook his head with a laugh. ”Alright, I haven’t finished yet—there’s also a first prize.”

Everyone held their breath, waiting for him to go on.

”There are three first-prize spots in total, and there are no specific prizes.”

Everyone froze. ”...” Huh, what do you mean? No prize?

Daniu said, ”Here’s how it is: whoever wins first prize can pick for themselves. As long as the price is within fifty taels of money, they can have the boss redeem it for them.”

”Pff...” Everyone found it hard to believe.

Someone shouted, ”As long as it’s within fifty taels, anything is okay? Can it be several different things?”

”Yes, it’s up to the winner to decide. And you don’t have to decide today; just go home and think it over slowly. We’ll give you half a month, and it’s fine to redeem it when work starts again next year.”

In an instant, the people below started buzzing with discussion.

Anything within fifty taels—didn’t that mean they could even buy a few mu of land?

The prize really was very flexible. But that was fifty taels; if they just worked step by step, not counting bonuses and raises in their wages, it would still take them several years to achieve that.

The more they talked, the more excited they became, and they all raised their heads. ”Chief Steward, when are we drawing lots?”

”We’ll start right now,” Daniu said. ”Everyone who works at Lu’s has one chance. You can draw for yourself, or you can have a family member draw for you. Whether you win or not depends on your luck. Alright, everyone line up.”

For the moment, no one bothered eating; they were busy discussing who in the family would be better at drawing lots.

Most of the staff lined up to draw for themselves, and some who felt they always had bad luck asked family members to draw for them.

The line was very long. Sitting at the table, Madam Li watched with burning envy and said to Lu Dasong, ”Our Daniu is a steward in the workshop; he gets a slot too, right? I’m his Mother, I’ll go draw.”

She looked raring to go, as if she were absolutely going to draw a first prize.

Fifty taels—that wasn’t a small amount at all.
